Want authentic YUMMY Chinese tonite? Then get the book NOW!
Irene Kuo is truly a phenomenal chef. Key to Chinese Cooking is a collection of authentic chinese recipes that is a required volume for anyone interested in Chinese cooking -- Chinese and non-Chinese alike. The recipes include regular favorites like scallion pancakes and almost unheard of authentic connoiseur pleasers such as 1-2-3-4-5 Spareribs. Anyone can make these dishes easily with Kuo's easy-to-follow steps. A perfect Chinese cookbook, only matched by real Chinese cookbooks, in which case, you'd have to be able to read Chinese in order to follow it! As a Chinese, a very picky eater, and one tough Chinese food critic, I give it an 11 out of 10!!!

The Julia Child of Chinese Cooking
Irene Kuo's recipes not only tell you what to do very clearly, but also the "why" of each direction. This is the only book of Chinese Cooking that gives me reliably excellent results. I have the 1977 edition. It is worn and dirty. I hope I can get a new copy of this book soon.

How I learned to cook Chinese
In the mid-eighties I had a job that allowed me to get home at 5pm. I used Irene Kuo's book to learn to cook Chinese. Not only are the recipes great, but the book is highly educational. I found it particularly useful to shop for the right ingredients.
Oneof my favorites is crab and corn soup. Overall, it's one of my "top 10 all time" cookbooks.

Chinese Communist Party in Power

A Chinese Marxist explains how Mao came to power
This remarkable collection of essays and reports comes from the pen of Chen Shu-tse, the central leader of the revolutionary Marxists in China from the 1920s through the 1960s. As a young rebel Chen worked together with Mao Tse-tung to develop a revolutionary party of the working people beginning in 1919. This comradely relationship lasted until the Stalinist degeneration that overtook the Russian soviet leadership in the 1925-29 period overwhelmed the Chinese Communist Party. Chen and his followers were expelled from the party in 1929 and subsequently became known as Trotskyists. As such they continued the battle to build a revolutionary workers party in China.

In the 1925-27 revolutionary upheaval, the Communist Party achieved a decisive leadership position among the masses of urban workers in China. But the party, under Mao's leadership, and working along the lines of Comintern policy, attempted to build an alliance with Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang. The Kuomintang was a nationalist party increasingly coming under the control of China's tyrannical landlords. This mistaken policy resulted in a massacre of the Communist-led workers in Shanghai carried out by Chiang's troops. Chen and his followers opposed this disastrous course.

A large portion of this 580-page book deals with the explanation of how the Stalinized Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949. In the post-WWII chaos the peasant masses surged forward repeatedly demanding control of the land and its resources and an end to landlord parasitism. The weakened Kuomintang was like a rotting wooden raft in this stormy revolutionary sea which served as the only hope of salvation for the wealthy and privileged elements in China, and they found themselves desparately clinging to it.

The Communist Party, having retreated to Yenan in 1934 after a series of defeats, found itself bolstered by the massive influx of worker and peasant fighters who saw this party as the starting point of opposition to the decaying Kuomintang regime. In the years leading to the insurrection of 1949, Chen explains, the CCP (a non-revolutionary, Stalinist party) repeatedly sought to dampen the rising struggles of the oppressed masses, to limit their gains, and to come to terms with Chiang in the formation of a coalition government. The Kuomintang was too weak, however, and the outcome of the struggle was determined by its own inner logic, not the aims of the CCP.

Forced to flee to Hong Kong in 1948 Chen continued to guide the Chinese Trotskyist movement as well as to participate in discussion and debates among revolutionary Marxist leaders worldwide. He supported the 1949 victory of the Chinese revolution, which was a giant gain for the masses of workers and peasants in spite of the Stalinist leadership. A workers state was formed. But he stressed that the accession to power of Mao's party did not change its essentially counterrevolutionary character. In order for the masses of Chinese people to achieve their liberation from all forms of exploitation they would need to effect a political revolution to bring to power a genuine Marxist party. This party would then serve as the vehicle for bringing the weight of the Chinese masses to bear in the worldwide struggle for socialism.

When China Shook The World ( it will again )
The Chinese revolution that triumphed in 1949 was a mighty event, which shook the world. The Chinese workers and farmers, in spite of their misleadership, tore one-fourth of the world's population out of the hands of U.S. British, German, French, and Japanese capitalists (all had investments and huge holdings in China at one time or another), out of the hands of what Malcolm X called the "Western or American system of imperialism." Read this book and "The Third Chinese Revolution And Its Development" and " Maoism Vs. Bolshevism", and learn what Malcolm found so admirable about the Chinese Revolution. Also here you will find the history of betrayals by the wish-they-were-capitalists-themselves Maoist-Stalinist bureaucrats who still rule today. All this in the testimony of two veteran communist fighters, Peng Shu-tse and Chen Pi-lan, who opposed imperialism and its puppets in action, as well as the monstrosities of Maoism. The resistance of the Chinese working class to the pro-capitalist "reforms" and to the attempted selling of the nation, its wealth, and its people by the bureaucracy to the same imperialists kicked out in 1949 has barely begun (3,000 illegal strikes in one year alone in the midnineties). That resistance will shake the whole world again. For the story of China today you need "Capitalism's World Disorder" by Jack Barnes.

The Reality of Chinese Stalinism, by a Chinese Leninist
I had the honor of knowing and working with ST Peng a little in the 1960s and 1970s. This was a man who had worked with Lenin and Trotsky in the Comintern who had stood up the Chiang Kai Shek, and to Maoism. This was a serious revolutionary Marxist who became a focus for former Red Guards escaping Mao who went all the way to Paris to learn from him. These articles and documents explain the nature of the Chinese revolution, its strength and its betrayal by Stalinism, as well as the capacities of Chinese workers and peasants to change the world. In his writing, Peng had the gift to be both theoretically clear as a revolutionist, and to be concrete as a writer showing how what he was talking about affected the real lives of the Chinese people. Of great interest is his depiction of how the "higher officials" actually lived their lives of privilege and luxury in the supposed days of "Maoist austerity.: As new battles are simmering in China-- strikes, demonstrations, protests--the new generation of fighters must find this wonderful book by one of China's first generation of real communists.

Review from signal processing View
This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.

review from signal processing view
This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.

The best reference for ANC algorithms
This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.

Absolutely THE best book on Y2K investing!
This book was a refreshing change from some other books that have been published on the subject of Y2K investing. Specifically, it is an extraordinarily well-researched book. It provides indepth details of possible y2k strategies and names specific stocks. Truly an outstanding effort!

It is the reasonable person's guide to investing for Y2K.
As an ex Chief Information Officer for a fortune 500 company, I've spent many years communicating to government and industry alike, what impact we could reasonably expect from the Year 2000 Computer Date Change Problem. This is the best book I have read to date, which provides reasonable and definitive answers to one the questions I am most frequently asked regarding Y2K, "What should I do about my investments?"

Today, as a consultant and author of THE REASONABLE PERSON'S GUIDE TO Y2K, I spend my time communicating about what moderate, down-to-earth, level-headed governments and individuals can do to prepare. In that regard, I consider L. Jay Kuo's and Edward Dua's book the reasonably person's guide to investing for the Year 2000 transition. I highly recommend this book for those who believe Y2K will not be a disaster, nor will it be "business-as-usual", and that reasonable preparedness for something "in between" is warranted.

If you believe Dr. Ed Yardeni, Chief Global Economist and Global Investment Strategist for Duetsche Bank Securities, when he predicts a 70% probability that Y2K will create a global recession which could last 12 to 24 months, then this book is must reading.

What I particularly liked about this book, is that the information is usable and it is not the "don't worry, be happy" message most brokerage houses are espousing. Not only do the authors provide powerful insight into how and why you should defensively posture current investments against a Y2K induced recession, they also venture forth suggestions on how to profit from it as well. Something I have been trying to get my broker to tell me for months. Come to think of it, I highly recommend this book for stockbrokers and fund managers too.

An investment guide not only helpful but hugely interesting!
Not being someone who typically reads a lot of investment guides, I was very happily astonished at how easily this book reads. L. Jay Kuo is an excellent writer, describing the background of the Y2K problem without getting too technical and obscure, and depicts the issue with extreme clarity and (dare I suggest it?) engaging wit. People from all backgrounds, from the investment-astute to the "digerati" (as Mr. Kuo puts it), to the neophytes, hesitant about investing in general but looking for some simple but straightforward insightful commentary and/or advice, will be able to get a lot out of this book. Oddly enough, it's even entertaining (!) -- Mr. Kuo is clever with his subheadings and his turn of phrase. While it is definitely not written to be "over people's heads" (as many investment guides seem to be), Mr. Kuo still manages to deliver deceptively clear prose with many witty allusions and insights, such that the book does not fall into the "pedantic trap" (as many investment guides ALSO seem to do). He explains the areas most likely to be adversely (and positively) affected by the upcoming confusion surrounding Y2K, presents really quite sound reasons for these views, and then suggests some viable approaches and at-least short term solutions so as to best protect oneself (and one's portfolio) from the inevitable chaos Y2K will present to the financial markets. Even if you never read another investment guide in your life, I recommend this one. Highly.

My new bibles
All of these books titled "Problems and Solutions on (subject): Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions" are invaluable tools for a physics graduate student, in my experience. When doing homework assignments, studying for exams or the qualifying exam itself, most graduate students should be elated to have an arsenal of solved problems at their disposal. I have purchased nearly every one of these books and I use them often. The biggest books (mechanics, quantum, and E&M) are fantastic resources for qualifier problems and examples. When I show these books to my fellow students, they immediately ask me where they can get a copy of their own.

One criticism: The index is sparse. It seems as though many problems are not listed under obvious key words. However, I have a suggestion for those that are also frustrated by this. Whenever I encounter an interesting problem, I go into the index and look under all of the obvious key words. If the problem is not listed, I add the problem number to the index in that spot. In all of my copies of these books, I am creating a comprehensive index. It takes time, but it is almost instructive to do this editing for it makes one more familiar with the book.

One other thing: I haven't found many errors, but I have found a few. Usually they are not apparent until one is working through the little details of a problem.

If you are a student in physics, I suggest that you get your hands on these books.

Studying for your exams??? Buy this book!
Work and understand all of the problems in this book and you will pass your Physics Ph.D. qualifying exam in Mechanics. I did it!

Way to Go..
This is by far, in my opinion, the best book for Mechanics. I was looking for a cheap, good book. And what I got, is simply THE BEST! There were alot of examples...explanations, etc.. And best of all, written by 27 Physicists?? How's that for a personal tutor who charges app. [...]???

Its wonderful!
I got this book 2 years ago and I still have it today. If you or someone you know likes science and microscopes, I have no choice but to reccomed this book for starters or people who are dying to try some microscope experiments. They tell you what you will need and safty options. And it even tells you the things you need to make your own lab! This is a very helpful book.

Great for the grade young or for the clueless
I was looking for a microscope book for the elementary school age. And I found it. This book is a great introduction for young minds, or for anyone who knows nothing about microscopes and the world of the very small. This little 48 page book covers everything from the history of microscope, the scale of things, how to use one, looking at cells, microorganisms, plants, insects, rocks, etc. even how to prepare your own slides, and the equipment you need. Great for the young, even for adults who know nothing about microscope and the world they reveal. As far as I could tell there are no photos in this book, but do not let this deter you from enjoying it, for it is beautifully illistrated with very detailed full color drawings. This would be a great book for child and adult to learn together. I would say this book is for grade school age kids, but Jr. High (i guess its called middle school these days) and high school ages might enjoy it. This is a very basic book, an introduction, a college or university student would get a laugh out of it and give to their 8 year old niece or nephew, who would love it.

Excellent Family Resource
We sell a lot of microscopes to families with children, and when we do, this is the book we recommend to go alongside that new scope. Each full color page is packed with well illustrated, easy to understand information and experimentation for the budding young microscopist. From how a microscope works, to how to use and care for one, this little book is a top pick.

Control Systems made understandable
This book is definitely one of the best introductory texts on linear Control Systems. Every item is theorically well explained without loosing the practical aspect on each subject. Highly recommended for people who started to study linear Control Systems at an undergraduate level.

Excelent Reference
One of the best books I have read. My students love It

Great for beginners and experts alike
Like all of Kuo's other books, this one is good reading. It covers all the important topics involved in Control system theory, time and frequency domain analysis and graph techniques, amongst other topics. Good question-and-answer section. Kuo has this style of writing where you feel he can read your mind and know what you are thinking as you read the book. It's a great book for beginners and experts alike. I think this is one of the best books on Control systems theory.

Totally Recommended
This book is the best I have read on this subject. Its biggest asset is the fact it starts from the basics of NDS and builds on this information. It includes real world examples (which I found invaluable in both solving and understanding the problem) and all solutions are explained in "straight talking English". Can't wait for the next release !

The Definitive Source For NDS Troubleshooting
If you are responsible for a production NDS environment, READ THIS BOOK! It is fully updated for the latest NDS changes, and provides a thorough understading of NDS processes and troubleshooting methods. The only resource on NDS that is more comprehensive is Novell's Logic Source for NDS II.

An incredible resource for all CNE's!
Peter Kuo and Jim Henderson are awesome! If you liked their NDS Troubleshooting book, you'll love this Guide to Troubleshooting NDS. An easy read, this book provides background information on the NDS and how it actually works...in plain English. It builds upon this background information to include troubleshooting techniques to help you successfully manage and repair a NetWare network. It also includes easy to read tables with NDS Error codes, as well as DSTRACE and DSREPAIR switches with explanations in one convenient manual. As a side benefit, it includes a significant amount of information to help prepare for Novell's Certified Directory Engineer tests. Thanks for my new Bible guys!

Problems and Solutions on Electromagnetism (Major American Universities Ph.D. Qualifying Questions and Solutions)
Published in Hardcover by World Scientific Pub Co (1993)
Author: Yung-Kuo Lim
Amazon base price: $78.00
Average review score:

Studying for your PhD exams? If so, buy this book!
If you work and understand every problem in this book, you will pass your Electrodynamics Ph.D. qualifying exams! That's was my experience!

One of the most useful books I have ever purchased
I purchased this book to assist me in my graduate courses using Jackson's text. Many of the homework assignments were actually problems taken from qualifying exams at different universites, so this book was very helpful for those problems. As for the Jackson problems, one will be lucky to find any help at all (too bad). I strongly recommend this to anyone who is pursuing a graduate physics degree, not only because it is an excellent handbook for the qualifying exam and homework assignments, but also because it is a very well organized source of information on the subject of Electromagnetism.

In addition to this text, I have also purchased the volumes on Quantum Mechanics and Mechanics. Both are as useful as this text, though I have to say that all of them lack a comprehensive index. There are also some errors, but they are few and far between. Also, these books do not provide background on any equations used. They may say something like "With the application of Schrodinger's Equation, this becomes...", yet in the same problem there may have been a step where De Moivre's theorem was applied and the authors have neglected to mention it. I suppose this is useful because if one is using the book as a study guide, it would not be instructive unless one was actually working out the problem, so it is up to the reader to uncover the little details.

A real gem!!!
The entire series is my savior. Each volume covers the material needed in the junior/senior level of physics. It truly has an emense selection of problems. I found that nearly all of my homework/exams were either exactly the same or merely a slight variation from one contained. I also have yet to find a single error, not even a sign error. One important thing is that it does need to be a supplement, as formulas are sometimes used without explicit reference to why. In general the reasons need to be found in an assigned text. My only gripe (and it is minor) is with the index...the index does not, in general, lead one to a relevent problem. For example, uses of Biot/Savart to solve this problem or that... The reason this is not a serious problem is that each topic has so many variations on the method/technique that it is simple enough to find at least a couple that are completely relevent. (given you know which section to look in)

Very interesting
I'm very critical of some Chinese writers like Amy Tan for their distortions of a life they haven't experienced. But this doesn't apply to Ha Jin, who survived the Revolution and was a soldier. I really like this collection of stories because Ha Jin excels in writing vignettes by injecting fresh details. Anyone who is curious about Communist China should read this book. Skip his novels though.

Ha Jin's Short Stories Have Tall Stature
Ha Jin brilliantly evokes emotion in short stories that may take some an epic novel to create the same impact. His words are sunbeams bouncing on desolate land and you want to continue despite the heartbreak that you may only survive simply to survive. Never to fully live in the light. He is the most eloquent writer and he allows us to view a world not known to most Americans: China under Mao. Be swept away with words and emotions.

A Terrific Collection of Short Stories
I picked up An Ocean of Words from a staff recommendations section of the bookstore. I am glad that I did. This book is a wonderful collection of short stories. This book was great.

The stories all take place on the border of China and the USSR during the early 1970s when the two communist countries actually came pretty close to war. The stories are actually a microcosim of Communist China as a whole.

The stories are wonderful and I highly recommend this book not just to sinophiles but to anyone who wants to read a great collection of stories.
