Great for ALL dancers...
I really love to use this book for my creative movement and modern classes of all ages... It is full of wonderful photos of Bill T. Jones in different shapes and poses and expressions, with short captions about how "I am a dancer. I want to dance." Then he proceeds to show us the different ways to use our bodies to express what dance means to us. I really recommend it for your dance library.

Dance! Dance! Dance!
The first time I showed this book to my 23 month daughter, she had me read it to her 8 times. The next day, her day care teacher asked me if she had been to a dance class over the weekend. Apparently, she attempted to emulate the stretches she saw in the book. She was enthralled with the wonderful ways that Bill T.Jones moves. Indeed, she simply could not believe that a body could move that way, so she rotated the book to meet her view of reality. The photographs in this book are exquisite, and can be an inspiration to any age.

A Hero to Remember
In the month of December of the year 1994, there was a 12yr old boy honored as a hero. Iqbal Masih had been a child slave in a Pakastani carpet factory. Five months later Masih had been murdered in his own homeland. Though his life was taken, his actions live on as he inspired middle school students world-wide and adults to help free and educate the child laborers. This is a powerful story of a courageous boys life and death. Masih was a remarkable boy who lived a very full, inspirational life in a tragically short life spand of only twelve years.

Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders Against Child Slavery
The story of Iqbal changed my perception of a child's place in the world. Who would have thought a four-year-old could be sold for approximately twelve dollars and forced to work in a rug factory? Who could imagine that a twelve-year-old Iqbal could speak for the rights of children in Pakistan?

This book made me angry and it made me cry. Susan Kuklin describes the lives of poor Pakistani families who are forced to sell their children into a life of bondage. This compelling piece of creative non-fiction is aimed at the middle school market, but the story is universal, and the black and white photos allow the reader into a world that is not an urban tale--but all too real. A must read for anyone that is interested in the future of the world's children.

I'm a media specialist at BelleVue Middle School in Florida. A small group of students and I read this book together. My students were shocked that many villages in Pakistan are too poor to have schools. They compared younger brothers and sisters to Iqbal in the factory. They learned a great deal about mobility and what it would be like to not have it. This book has a helpful index and glossary of terms as well as descriptive side-bars that make research easy.

The Harlem Nutcracker
The Harlem Nutcracker written by Susin Kuklin, is an enchanting book. Although it is taken from a ballet by Donald Byrol it is written like a fairytale. Susin Kuklin's beutiful pictures capture the dancers' feelings which we feel so deeply. The words are a perfect accompaniment. Although there are some scary moments I recommend this book to kids from 8 years old and up.

Irrepressible Spirit
"Even today, when nobody else has a car, my father has three cars. He has two motorcycles and two houses. In my country, people are sentenced to four to seven years in prison if they are caught with fighting cocks. My father has fighting dogs and fighting cocks. It's legal for my father." (David Moya/Cuba)

"One afternoon, I was standing by the monument speaking to a half million people. I was speaking very excitingly. I was passionate. At some point, I realized that I was uttering the paragraphs and sentences that I had read a long time ago in my grandfather's unpublished books." (Li Lu/China)

"Lin Lin did not know what kind of work she was supposed to do until a man started toughing her breasts and body." (unnamed Burmese girl)

Here are true stories told by these and other young people around the world to Human Rights Activists. Susan Kuklin brings forth each story with conflict and characterization not often attempted in non-fiction. I read each and every story of hope, courage, and despair. I could not put the book down to the end.

Hoops with Swoopes
Hello, my name is Claudia Richard. My sister Rachel and I think that Hoops with Swoopes is a great book. We love the fact that Susan Kuklin took a basketball star and turned her game into dance. We think this is a book that's good for people of all ages. We love how attractive and colorful the pictures are. It keeps your attention. People will find themselves imitating Sheryl Swoopes' poses. Maybe they"ll even play as well.

Better books out there for answering the "why" question.
This book immediately begins with, "there are no answers to why a person commits suicide." That is false. If the author would have educated herself on neurobiological brain disorders and their link to suicide, she would have found that many times, the "whys" can be answered. The book does give accurate information about suicide grief though, and what many people experience after such a tragedy. I realize this is a book recounting personal stories, but it also would have been a perfect opportunity to explain why many suicides occur and this book fails to accomplish that.

Great book if you've had a suicide in community or family
This book doesn't tell the reader what should have been done or could have done to save the person who committed suicide. Instead it tells the stories of the survivors whose loved ones took their own lives. It was a powerful resource that I used in working with high school students who lost a classmate to suicide. I just made it available to students to check out. So far, I have only had good reports from them.
