Revealing look at the Canadian immigrant & ethnic experience
Myrna Kostash's All of Baba's Children is a penetrating and revealing look at the lives of those of Ukrainian ethnic identity in Canada. Although the book is focused on this population, the conclusions she arrives at are of interest to anyone looking into the long term effects of being an ethnic subgroup in a larger culture. The book melds together personal recollections with source documents and other materials to probe the pressures and conflicts this community has experienced in the past hundred years. Extremely valuable reading for those of Ukrainian descent in both the USA and Canada, but also of great value to sociologists studying ethnic minorities in these two countries.

Mastery of the physical attributes of the spoken word
Jon Whyte is a filmmaker, bookseller, publisher, historian, museum curator, literary critic, columnist, and poet. It his poetry that is showcased in Jon Whyte: Mind Over Mountains. He is a true master of the physical attributes of the spoken word (including spacing, typography, and design when set down in writing) as this impressive and memorable collection of his work amply documents. Illustrated with black and white photography, these pieces will serve to introduce one of Canada's best to a whole new generation of readers. Falling In Love: Falling in love with what he'd written,/taking note of skill and craft,/either he was daft or smitten,/confused the ardor and, no doubt,/what she thought he wrote about.//He fell in love with what he'd written,/believing nominally it concerned/the woman it seemed to be about,/and hence by typical delusion/fell zatch over guggle into confusion,//falling in love with whom he'd written,/believing her to be the poem,/bedded her inside the home/he'd made of words, and on the shelf/neatly placed her in himself.
