Because We Are Americans

To be read in sporadic bursts
Jesse Kornbluth delivers a book that wrenches us back into the events of September 11 and gives us permission once again to cry for the victims, rage against the senselessness, and beam with pride at the heroism of the day. If you plan to pick up this book and read it in one fell swoop, don't. It'll drain you. Instead, spend a few minutes now and again in a cozy nook and leaf through this book for words of pain, wisdom and inspiration.

The point of this important book is not only to serve as a documentary of our reaction to the unfolding of events, but also to give us back OUR words. The quotes from the media tell much of the story...the online postings of "the rest of us" tell the remainder of that story. The editors of Because We Are Americans must've sifted through thousands of online postings to find just the right ones to represent what we all felt, and continue to feel. Read it, and you may see yourself in the words.

Very Moving!
I teach a film history class and Saving Private Ryan is one of the films we watch and discuss. This collection of letters is very moving. The variety of reactions and emotions is very moving. The letters were impressive and they fit in well while teaching the film. If you teach a film class or plan to use Saving Private Ryan in the classroom I highly recommend this collection to supplement your teaching.

'Now You Do Know'
'Now You Know' pretty much sums up the content of this book and the epic motion picture that inspired it. Every page is a human story, a story of everyday people changed by the unspeakable horror of war. One cannot help but be moved by the sheer honesty of the reactions evoked by this film. With the royalties going to the National D-Day Museum let us hope that the messages of this film and book continue to be remembered, for the sake of our future, and for the people who gave their lives for our freedom...

Outstandind Book!
(REVEALS INFO!) I thought this book was great but the movie was a lot better in my opinion. Saving Privite Ryan the novel was about a 4 on a 1-5 scale (5 being the best). My favorite character is Reiben because he carries a BeretaAutomaticRifle and he does not die. This book made me appreciate what the men of our country have done and I don't look down upon older people any more;I would like to thank them for it.

Well.............................
This book is a nice history tool. Whoever who was there at the eighties would remember the epic "Colas war" between Pepsi and Coke. You could have a lot of insights about advertising, diversification and marketing at the time with this book. Problems are: (1) This is obviusly biased, for Enrico couldn't write a book granting any victory to Coke; (2) What happened next: Goizueta became sort of brahman of the business community of America and the main topic of Enrico's book (the debacle of New Coke due, according to him, to Coke's despair because of the excellent performance of Pepsi which in turn lead to this well-rememberede disaster) has became a classic case of how a leader turns a catastrophe into a golden opportunity. Of course, debacle it was when the book was written and I bought all the insights of Enrico, but almost 20 years after it doesn't seem such a problem at all. At the end, in spite of this book, considering the market value of Coke and the results of its planning, probably it was Coke's army leaded by Goizueta who won the war if it was a war at all, since nobody call like this any more.

A must read book for every young executive!
While reading this book, I actually felt like I was in Pepsi's corporate headquarters, in Purchase New York, listening in on their strategic planning and implementation. Roger Enrico wrote this book when he was just the president of Pepsi USA. He tells a great story of the underdog going to battle with the giant. Today Enrico is the CEO of Pepsi CO, and responsible for the spin off that created the new company Tricon. Reading this book will emphasize one's understanding of the importance and value of having a good mentor. Also, after reading Enrico's accounts of the "cola wars" one may never want to watch television or go to the movies again, because all of the real life drama is created by the competition that corporate America thrives on. Enrico points out that Pepsi alone sells enough soft drinks in a year to float an entire armada, and then proposes the question "why?" As he says, water is a lot cheaper and booze provides a better kick. Its all about great marketing. Once I picked the book up, I couldn't put it down.

Only Americans are compassionate??
How supremely arrogant to think that we are compassionate "because we are Americans." Don't get me wrong, I'm not jumping on the "hate America" bandwagon, it's just that anyone who follows the news well would know that people in every country pull together in times of crisis. Photos of the embassy bombings in Africa showed scores of people scramling over the wreckage trying to help, photos of a market bombing in Kabul showed a team of six men carrying a bloody stanger to a hospital...etc etc etc To think that compassion is some uniquely American trait is foolish, arrogant and dangerous. When you start thinking your country's citizens are inherently better people you start down the path to Empire. Compassion is not an American trait, it's a human trait. By the way, if we were truly so compassionate we'd have cared about terrorism when they bombed our barracks in Saudi Arabia, destroyed two of our embassies, or nearly sank one of our warships. Sad fact is, it was only news when we started to feel vulnerable at home. Have we learned our lesson? When's the last time you heard someone talk about the current situation in Afghanistan? Now when's the last time you heard someone talk about American Idol?

This is brain washing!
Conceit, arrogance and egotism are the essentials of patriotism.... Patriotism assumes that our globe is divided into little spots, each one surrounded by an iron gate. Those who had the fortune of being born on some particular spot, consider themselves better, nobler, grander, more intelligent than the living beings inhabiting any other spot. It is, therefore, the duty of everyone living on that chosen spot to fight, kill, and die in the attempt to impose his superiority upon all others.

Emma Goldman

to the anonymous slanderer
I couldn't let the Emma Goldman quote (fractured and irrelevant as it is) go unchallenged. Her life's work was devoted to the failed political philosophy of anarchism, and as such would likely be a soul-mate to those responsible for the atrocities of September 11. Here is what a somewhat better mind had to say about such things:

Neither a life of anarchy nor one beneath a despot should you praise; to all that lies in the middle a god has given excellence. - Aeschylus

The vast majority of those who were murdered on Sept. 11 were just trying to live their lives "in the middle". This book is a simple, thoughtful reminder of that truth.

Highly Confident: The Crime And Punishment Of Michael Milken

Solid Job by Author
This book details the business career of Milken, the rise to the top and then the fall to prison. The book has a fair amount of rather interesting tabloid type information of his business operation, his life style and his take home pay - so much money it is almost sickening. The author also takes us through how he got caught, what the charges were, the trail and the prison time. We also get some information on Milken after jail. Overall you can tell the bias of the author in that he obviously views Milken in high regard and has not one nice thing to say about the government attorneys. The book is well written and interesting, if not bias. There is some new information here and if you are interested in the period or the man then this is a book you should read.
