An Excelent Investment For All Educators
Of all the curriculum books I have used and examined this is by far the best book out there. In discussions with vocational educators around the world, I have found this book to be one of the most highly regarded informational sources on curriculum development. A great resource tool for all educators, a must have for vocational educators.

Reading Rules! : Motivating Teens to Read

Expressly recommended to educators and librarians
Reading Rules!: Motivating Teens To Read is expressly recommended to educators and librarians charged with the responsibility to encourage students in grades 6, 7, and 8 to read for both fun and information. Elizabeth Knowles (an elementary teacher for 29 years and current Director of Staff Development at Pine Crest School, Boca Raton, Florida) and Martha Smith (media specialist at the Pine Crest School with 21 years of experience in the field) effectively collaborate to explain how to construct an environment conducive to reading and how to implement interactive activities for sparking interest in reading. Reading Rules! covers reading workshops, literature circles, book clubs, booktalks, thematic units, and information literacy. Educators and librarians are shown how to incorporate these activities into the classroom or media center, and provides extensive lists of sample materials and resources for student reading and professional consultation. Reading Rules! is an important contribution to the field and a highly recommended addition to academic and teaching training reference collections and reading lists.

Excellent Source Book!
The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations gives you more than you could ever possibly use! For a writer who often uses quotes to back up certain portions of my works, I have found this edition more than satisfactory & worth every penny paid for it. About the last 3rd of the book houses the index, where you can look up any word & corresponding quotes. It directs you to the page where it's listed by giving you the author's name, the page number, and then a number for the paragraph where you'll find your quote.

Indispensable volume
This is one to have at hand right there by your desk all the time, ready to dip into whenever you get stuck looking for the source of a famous quote. Or one to have in the bathroom, for entertainment during long sessions on the toilet. Or on the bedstand for some light nighttime reading. The updated version seems good enough, though perhaps some might detect a bias towards the English when it comes to the newer entries (but then, it is an English publication). I was also disappointed with a few ommissions (I looked for Keith Waterhouse and Terry Johnson, both British comedy writers, and both sadly absent), but then you can't please all of the people all of the time (...hang on a sec... hmm, looks like that's a garbled version of something Abe Lincoln said... Gee, this thing is useful!). The listings at the top corner of each page are a little annoying, since they give the Christian name first, thus making it slightly more difficult to find something alphabetically, but this is just one minor fault in an otherwise excellently presented publication.

Great quote book...
I highly recommend this worthy publication. I consider it a much better "quotations book" than the current (17th) edition of Bartlett's, because of its superior balance and more representative content. The organization is by author, although it does have an excellent and very extensive index, as well as a (rather small) topic-oriented content section.

If you need and/or enjoy "quote books" you simply must have this one.

Oxford vs Brewer's
I purchased this title because my Brewer's has gotten lost. I thought I'd replace it with a similar title that would be just as much fun to get lost in. The Oxford is just as seductive. In time I will get used to its odd indexing (the article's subject may not be the first printed word in the phrase so that the eye is often confused about just where in the alphabet one happens to be). However the first time I actually looked up something I was disapppointed: Beer and skittles> Life is not beer and skittles> 19th century proverbial saying> Yes, but what exactly is a skittle? And what does the saying mean? I think I will purchase another Brewer's. I don't know that it will do any better with this query but I believe the Oxford does not completely replace it.

A Must-Have for Any Writer's Reference Library
This volume contains a useful variety of words, phrases, and biography information that you won't find in any other dictionary. While reading newspapers, magazines, and other current media, I often encounter cultural references, phrases, proverbial sayings, and more, that aren't listed in any dictionary that defines single words.

For example, The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable contains entries for a wide variety of subjects such as John Lennon, Pop goes the weasel, and "It's the economy, stupid." Great stuff!

At well over a thousand pages, this volume has all the heft of any good dictionary.

pretty good idea, not so good execution
The idea is good, but the execution is poor. Characters are one dimensional and tend to be sterotypical. There's a bra burning feminist who learns the error of her ways from Anne Boleyn, a racist reinforced by George Silver, and so on. Really can't say enough about the single dimensionality of the characters.

a fascinating journey into "what if"
What if one could "host" the memories of a famous person, of someone who has qualities that you wish you had, of your deceased beloved. How would you be changed? How would the long-deceased react to the modern world? These are some of the questions that the stellar authors in this anthology attempt to explore.

A scientist discovers how to extract memories from genetic material. He becomes Dr. Chimera - a blend of himself and his beloved wife. An inventor hosts Leonardo da Vinci and finds there is more to life than inventing. A mother gets more than she bargained for when she melds an explorer with her comatose daughter.

A variety of authors from the science fiction, fantasy and mystery genres tackle this premise of experiencing the memories of another and a very satisfying anthology is born.

Many better collections are available.
I bought this book by mail hoping that it would be another fascinating book of quotations. Actually, it ranks quite low among the collections available. Look, for example, at "The Penguin Book of Twentieth-Century Quotations," and similar ones edited by John M. Cohen and/or M. J. Cohen. You will not be able to resist browsing through them for a long time. This book is less attractive. What purpose is served by the space devoted to lists of cliches: In cold blood, down memory lane, live and let live, etc.? The quotations are often trite, seldom interesting.

Well Organized Quotation Book
This is very well organized book, the quotations are arranged alphabetically by themes (life, death, love, forgiveness, the old age, past, etc.) and then arranged by index, you can look up any word, eg. Peace, peaceably, peacefully, peace-time). Unlike other quotations book I used before. Topics range this book covers are wide and have more quotations (about 5,000) more than Bartlett Quotation book I own. However this is less bulky and easier to have a reference book on the side
