Finally, a young Adult book that actually depicts real life!
I read this book about 5 or 6 years ago, and it made me so sad to think that relationships could actually end up this way. I went back and read it again after I broke up with my non monogamous and inadequate boyfriend, and I laughed at the reality of the story. I hate to sound cynical, but do think that this book prepares girls for the inevitable sexual relationship disappointments in their future. It's a great life manual for girls, along with Judy Blume's "Forever... "

excellent
I really like Norma Klein's approach to young adult topics. Her style was really progressive for the late 80's. She does not condescend to teens as if the issue of sex is nonexistent, or pontificate in any way. She is accepting of the differences, racial, familial, and individual, that characterize young adults. I also really like the way the characters never fixate on their appearances. They are self confident while maintaining a sense of reality. That is a great message for kids, and it does not come off at all like a sermon. This book treats the issues of being a young adult with dignity.

Realistic.
This was one of the greatest books I have ever read. Norma Klein's books are so honest and open. All of her books are very realistic because she understands that not everyone's life is perfect. Her books don't make you feel bad that your life is not as good as the characters. I find the people in her books, especially Jody in "It's OK if You Don't Love Me" very easy to relate to. This book is an excellent prtrayal of young love and the confusion that goes along with sex. The first time I read this I was 12. I definetly recommend this to mature preteens as well as older teens.

Fins out how a boy copes with his grandma's disease
This is an incredible book. I have read it a dozen times. It doesn't show the normal life of an teenage boy living in the "never sleeping city" New York. It is about life and about love and about taking care for each other. The main character's Grandmother Gustle has Alzheimer's disease and starts to forget about her life... during the book we learn details about the disease and how to cope with it. The way the incerdible Norma Klein tells us about the bad things (illness) in life and how to deal with it helps us to try and improve the world and to help other peple (especially older people). You have to read and find out yourself... especially as a Norma Klein Fan!

Norma Klein Knows
This sophisticated young adult novel centers around ninth-grade Nina, a shy, precocious girl who lives part-time with each of her divorced parents. Though fairly well-adjusted to her parents' divorce, and even her father's homosexuality, Nina fears that closeness with her father will be sacrificed if her father's boyfriend, Greg, moves in. Nina and her father contend with their needs and feelings, and the situation results in some significant discoveries for Nina.

A Good Novel
I don't know why so many of Norma Klein's novels are out of print, because all of the ones I have read are very well written and explore complex and important issues. "Now That I Know" is the story of 13 year old Nina whose life seems to be getting increasingly more complicated as she gets older. She has to deal with her loving but strained relationship with her divorced mother and feels like she is lagging behind her boy crazy best friend. Then she finds out that her father's relationship with his best friend isn't what she thought it was. Her discovery that her father is gay and that his partner is moving in with them is handled in a realistic fashion. I strongly recommend this book to young teens, especially those who have dealt with a parent's coming out at a time when their own sexuality is just beginning to emerge.

Loved to pieces!
This is one of my most treasured books from my childhood! I still love it at 25! Despite the pages pulling out of the seams, I still open it to read, despite having memorized favorite scenes! (The scene about the journey to the Nutcracker Prince's kingdom is purely divine!) I have noticed in some of the pictures Gelsey Kirkland (Clara) has curlers in her hair! I assume they had a photo shoot prior to a show. It's simply precious! If you're a fan of Gelsey, Barishnikov, or the Nutcracker, find this! Buy it! Love it!

This is the ballet that inspired my life, let the words and pictures inspire yours!

Wonderful Earlier Norma Klein
This was the first Norma Klein novel that I read, sometime back in junior high school, and the one that introduced me to Klein's wonderfully real teen characters. This particular novel stands out in my mind not only for the fact that Ali, Ethan, and Gretchen were some of my favorite fictional characters, but also for what must have been one of the very first homosexual relationships to be portrayed in a young adult novel (I believe this was first published in the 1970's). As realistically and sensitively done as the subplot involving Ali's mother is, it is still only a contributing factor to what makes this book great. Ali's struggle to adjust to the many changes in her life, such as her parent's divorce and being forced to choose between them, a move to the opposite end of the country, and her changing relationship with her best friend when Ali falls in love with her friend's brother, are very true to life. Norma Klein's books are always a refreshing change from the Sweet Valley clones flooding the market, and this is one of the best.

A great book about growing up with a single parent
I think this book is great for children who do not have a father. Brett Levin is an 11-year-old who lives with her mom, Deborah, a photographer, in New York City. Deborah never married Brett's father and Brett faces life without a father and she is enjoys it that way.

Brett's friend Evelyn desperately wants her divorced mother to find her a father and obsessively tries to help her mom with her dates. Brett discusses how she likes having a single mom and how Evelyn tries to hard to get a father. Brett meets Theo while at a fashion show where her mom is taking pictures. Theo is near Deborah's age and he has an Irish wolfhound. Deborah meets Theo, or the Wolf Man as Brett calls him, at a march in Washington.

I really enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it. It took little time to read and readers of this age would benefit from reading about another person their age.

A great favorite
This is one of my all-time favorite children's books. I own a hardcopy and a paperback, and have read it several times over the years.

It's the story of a mother and daughter living alone together. The mother finds a hairy boyfriend that the daughter nicknames "The Wolfman." The story progresses as The Wolfman becomes more and more a part of their lives, until he finally moves in. This book is one of the earliest children's books to deal with a single mother and a live-in boyfriend. But the story is handled gracefully, and the child is fully accepting of the situation. If anything, the awkwardness of the adults makes the child want to make them more comfortable with the situation.

I highly recommend for either children, or for adult light (very light) reading.

The beauty of life and death in a heartwrenching story
I first found the book at Goodwill for only a quarter. That was four years ago when I was just 16. For the past four years I have tried to find the movie, series or Sunshine Christmas but with no luck. If anyone has any info on this wonderful book and the movies and would like to help me out, please, PLEASE email me I would be glad to pay for the movie. Thanks.

Sunshine: A Novel
I first read this book while in high school, shortly after it came out in print. Since then, I have read it an average of every 3-4 years. One copy wore out, and I purchased another. I laugh and cry every time I read it. It is my all-time favorite book, and I have read hundreds of books. Being a mother of 3, I cannot imagine what it must feel like to know you are dying, yet try to live life to the fullest for your child. I just hope that when my daughter is old enough to read Sunshine, she will enjoy it as much as I do. Also, could anyone please tell me where I can get a copy of the movie?

Because it could happen to any of us...
I accidentally came across the novel Sunshine when i was at a library sale, and it has quickly become my absolute favorite book. Not only is it well written but it has inspired me to live my life to the fullest, because you never know what will happen. I have been desperately searching for the movie or any information on what happened to Jennifer (Jill) or "Sam", so if any of you know, please help me out!
