A Great Baseball Story
Paul Mather is a character that any baseball fan can relate to. Paul has a passion for pitching that is so strong, not even a incurable blood disease can stop him from getting on the mound. This is not only a story about baseball, but a story about life. I am an elementary eduacation student, and I hope to use this book in my classroom. The way Alfred Slote develops Paul's character through the story is amazing. As I read I felt like I was going through everything with Paul. If you have ever enjoyed books by Matt Christopher this is definetely a book for you to read. I would recommend this book to anyone age 9 and up.

Wonderful Juvenile literature book
This is a heartwarming tale of a young boy with leukemia and a zest for baseball. The theme of going after your goals, regardless of the obstacles, is personified in the main character of Paul Mather. Though set in the 1970's, this story transcends time to today. Many children are still fighting Leukemia, as well as many other illnesses.
Children will connect with Paul forging his parents name on the permission slip for baseball. What child has not forged a signature, or thought about it, and then was caught? This experience by Paul is universal.
Childhood love of activity, also gives universal appeal, through Paul's love of baseball. Many young boys, and some girls, can name their favorite player's statistics. Paul, the main character, is the same. This book is a wonderful story to share. I would use this in a middle school English classroom.

Hang Tough Paul Mather
Reviwer:Auston October 26,2001
This is my first time reading this book. Hang Tough Paul Mather is a book about a boy named Paul Mather who loves baseball but he has a disease that causes his parents not to let him play. Unless his doctor say it's OK, he can't play. But he plays anyway without doctor's permission. I would recommend it to any one(except a baby). It's a Great book.

The Easiest Writing Guide Ever!
I first purchased this book when I was a freshman in college seven years ago. It is without a doubt the best and easiest reference guide to writing I have ever read. I love the plastic tabs that mark each section. This guide is easy to read and follow it is organized in basic steps that are categorized accourding to section. So for example if you need to find out how to cite a web page or a video tape, etc using the MLA style you just flip to the section called doucmentation clearly marked with a plastic tab. I have since purchased an updated guide for myself and also bought one for my brother - a freshman in college. I really wish I had this book when I was in high school. I highly recommend this book to any high school, college, graduate student or writer. I especially recomend this book for students with learning disabilities, I myself have ADD and before I got this guide I could not understand how to write a paper in the MLA style or in any style other than a book report. I promise this is the easiest reference guide to writing ever published.

This is the best handbook on the market!
This book is the best on the market - I highly recommend it to all students in high school and college -- and it is a must for every person who writes in business! It has everything you need to know about professional writing from the sentence to the essay or research paper, as well as resumes and letters. It should be added to the desk collection along with the dictionary and thesarus. I love the way it opens and lays flat; I love the tabs for easy recognition of sections; it has large enough print and enough whitespace to make it very easy to read; it has great explanations and examples, and the MLA section is complete and easy to follow. It even has a section for people who speak English as a second language and are dealing with the special problems related to English. This is a must have book !

The best handbook for writers ever published.
This handbook gives you all the information you need to know when writing at college level and above. A must for all writers.

broad spectrum that is though-provoking
to say the least. classic essays in the field of psychology and linguistics. a must have for the beginner and the specialist alike. highly recommended.

Interesting & well-edited intro to Linguistics
This collection of essays touches on all the major points of Linguistics (very briefly) and is a great introduction to the field. The different authors all have a slightly different style, but it is not jarring and does not interfere with the ability to pull information out of the text. I have read other intro to linguistics books and none have been as interesting or informative as this one. I highly recommend this book to anyone who plans to take a college 'english language' or linguistics class, and to anyone interested in linguistice but deosn't know where to start.

Excellent college student reference
I originally purchased this book for a class, yet I have found myself going back to it on many occasions. I helped me become a better writer with its many fine examples of poems and short stories. With excerpts from some of the world's well-known writers, this book provides examples of many different styles and techniques that can be valuable to any serious college student.

Experimental Fluvial Geomorphology
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1987)
Authors: M. Paul Mosley, William E. Weaver, and Stanley Alfred Schumm
Amazon base price: $100.00
Average review score:

Must reading for sequence stratigraphers,
The title may be slightly misleading and even off-putting but do not put down this book. The authors summarize several years of research done at Colorado State University. This reasearch has allowed them to develop some powerful process models which explain the evolution of fluvial systems over time. These models, while derived from flume work, apply well to the real world. Observations discussed and inferences put forth by the authors have been documented in the field by researchers for companies such as Exxon. They fit quite well with the sequence stratigraphic ideas found in the professional literature published by AAPG and SEPM (to name a few). Every geologist who wishes to become a competent stratigrapher should read this book. A great follow-up to Schumm's earlier book 'The Fluvial System.' CJ

OKU Arthroplasty-essential to the orthopaedic resident
It is well understood that the OKU series is an excellent resource for those training in orthopaedic surgery at any level. OKU Hip and Knee Reconstruction 2 upholds this tradition splendindly. In the usual thourough fasion, this essential text gives an excellent review of the most current literature covering all of the topics of joint reconstructive surgery. Furthermore, OKU continues the tradition of supplying the reader with a classic bibliography which is priceless and saves hours of medline searching through less relevant papers before finding a well developed study. Surgical indications and techniques are well described, and the most current controvesial topics covered. Every orhtopaedic resident in the United States should have this text.

Excellent reference indeed
If you're going to work in the area of Cryptography, you can't afford
to neglect this book.

We used this in a course, and even though it's a handbook, it doubles up
pretty well as a textbook, since it has all the underlying mathematical
theory, presented in a clear and concise manner.

For sheer breadth and depth of coverage, this book is unmatched in the
field. It may not have enough on some topics to satisfy everyone, but
then i suspect most such topics were not so prominent in 1996, which
is when the book was written.

Starting with number theory, it goes on cover pseudorandom bits and
sequences, stream and block ciphers, hash functions, and digital signatures,
establishment protocols, implementation, patents and standards - you name
it, you got it.

On the one hand, there's enough theory to make you wonder whether it
should be called 'applied', but then it indeed qualifies as implementations
are discussed as well.

And of course, there's an exhaustive bibliography, with more pointers to
the literature than one could possibly follow up.

One word of caution, though : it requires hard work. If you want a more
'relaxed' coverage of comparable breadth (but not depth), you can do
worse than look up Bruce Schneier's 'Applied Crypography', which is a
delightful read, but nowhere as rigorous (read academic) as this one.

All in all, this is an indispensable reference for those in the field -
rigorous and exhaustive, yet eminently readable.

If you still haven't made your mind up, here's one final piece of advice :
visit the authors'(rather the book's) website, where you'll get the
implementations of all the algorithms in the book, and a (presumably)
pleasant surprise :-)

Not for the faint of heart.
This book is a wonderful reference for any student or professional seriously interested in cryptography. The book is intended for people people who already have a strong background in math and/or computer science; the faint of heart should steer clear. For a chattier introduction, refer to Schneier's "Applied Cryptography."

An excellent reference for anyone in computer science
A thorough coverage of topics in cryptography is only one of many features which make this book invaluable to computer scientists. While not intended to be a textbook, this handbook includes enough background information to be of use to those with minimal theoretical computer science knowledge. The chapter organization is logical and very modular so that after reading the introductory chapters, one can skip ahead to the chapters of interest with little difficulty.
The second chapter provides a concise review of probability theory, information theory, complexity theory, and number theory. This chapter would be helpful to anyone in computer science who already has some discrete math background. For readers with no discrete math background I would recommend first reading "Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications" by Kenneth Rosen, the editor of the series this book belongs to.
The coverage of number-theoretic problems in chapter 3 is very easy to follow and provides a handy reference to the average case performance of the best known algorithms for each.
The next few chapters are very math-intensive and outline the most common encryption algorithms and standards with examples. The chapter on block ciphers includes a section on classical ciphers and cryptanalysis which, as a sidenote, might be of interest to students of linguistics.
The later chapters present protocols for authentication, digital signing, and key management which build on the algorithms of the previous chapters, but can be understood independently.
One of the final chapters presents methods of effecient computation which again would be useful to anyone in computer science, not just those who are interested in cryptography.
Overall, the development of the topics in the book is complete (although by no means rigorous) and concise, including examples only where necessary. I highly recommend this book to students who want to learn more about cryptography, anyone whose job requires some knowledge of standards for authentication, digital signing, etc., such as internet security, and any computer scientist who has an academic interest in algorithms and their applications.

Adaptive Radiation of Neotropical Primates
Don't let the title scare you. Even readers who are interested in "neotropics" as a whole can appreciate the technical nature of this volume of work. A progressively written volume on primate behavior that will "fuel the mind" of the "budding primate enthusiest" and titilate the seasoned taste buds of researchers and scientist alike. A serious read for serious brains. The title sure did a major face lift to my expanding bookcase.

Review from The Quaterly Review of Biology (June 1998)
"Quite good...the papers present new data on important topics...a worthwhile contribution to the state of the art on New World Monkeys."

One of the original greats of photography.
Steiglitz is one of the great masters of the art of photography. Married to producing quality material, his work will never be "out of style." In addition, today's media obsessed population can find excitement in the stories of his personal life with Georgia O'Keefe. So it seems as though there's something for all.

Interpreting Bach at the Keyboard
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (1993)
Authors: Paul Badura-Skoda and Alfred Clayton
Amazon base price: $59.00
Used price: $40.00
Average review score:

For the Pianist
Here is performance information for the pianist without apologies. There are numerous excellent books for organists and harpsichordists from which I have been forced to extrapolate to the piano. Badura-Skoda exhaustively covers all facets of Bach performance on the piano: rhythm, articulation, tempo, and that endless bug-a-boo, ORNAMENTS! He is fearless in expressing his insight and opinion on ornaments and their execution. Musical examples are plentiful, avoiding the need to fetch scores. Of particular interest is his section on the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue, a short chapter on 18th c. organ-barrels(!), and a Gouldian Imaginary Interview on the "Urtext Problem". "Interpreting Bach" is an informative reference book reminiscent of Rosenblum's "Performance Practices" in scope and ease of use. Well worth the investment for the pianist knocking on Bach's door seeking entry. Badura-Skoda can help open it for you.
