Excellent for KID players and all 1. d4 players
This entertaining and well-written book should have a large audience, as a huge percentage of chess players play king's indian systems all the time with black. This book pretty much describes everything white will throw at you (other than most traditional king's indian lines), including Torre Attacks, Trompowskys, Veresovs, Averbakh, Four Pawns (those last two are the only regular king's indian lines given), Barry Attack, London System, Blackmar-Diemer, and others. The book has lots of explanatory text and twenty-nine annotated games flesh out the main ideas. It is a repertoire book, meaning that the book focuses on recommended lines for black. Burgess' writing is, as always, clear, entertaining, instructive, and witty. The Batsford production is excellent. A fine chess book.

A must have for any King's Indian Player
I love both sides of the King's Indian, and nothing frustrates me more than to have white avoid it with some offbeat system, such as the Torre or London. This book does an outstanding job of showing black how to handle these offbeat openings (which are showing up more and more often in tournament play).

Moving
I was featured in this book along with my mother(pg.22)and I remember when it was just a homework assignment in elementary school. When I was told it was a book I was amazed to see all of the people I knew and the moving stories it consisted of. I enjoy that book everytime I pick it up. It is especially easy for children to read because it was written by people aging 10-14. I especially love the foreword that was written by Rosa Parks herself. Very insiteful.

Fantastic
There are many wonderful stories told within the context of this rather difficult subject. For those who use writer's workshop . . . this is an excellent example of the use of interviews and other nonfiction techniques.

Another great job by the illustrator
The Candyland books are superbly illustrated. My children love the realistic pictures of the candy. Warning: they may get hungry.

helpless Africa?
This book does an excellent job of telling the tale of the visit of three great African kings to England in the late 1890s. Provides an accurate portrayal of King Khama and his interaction with Joe Chamberlain and Cecil Rhodes. An excellent, factual, entertaining story of successful African resistance.

Excellent Book
This book is a good book for both novices and people who have some experience with matlab. It starts from the easiest at the beginning to teaching you doing complex jobs in the end. The examples in the book are clearly explanied. You can just finish everything in good guidlines and so on. So I should suggest this is a good book for those who are engineering majors and need to use matlab for some hw.

Incredible book on Samisch
This is one of the better opening books that I have. It has 56 games annotated in tremendous depth, which set out reams of textual explanation and technical analysis of all major lines in the Samisch. The index at the back is excellent. The production of the book is great too. In fact, everything about this book is great. Add this to the fact that you will be able to use this stuff a lot. As you all know, lots of people play the King's Indian Defence, and you will be playing the Samisch in a good percentage of all your games. Highly recommended

Just right for kids who are still learning to read
If you buy this book expecting to introduce your children to Arthurian myth, you will probably be disappointed. This book keeps only young Arthur, Merlin, and the barest outline of the beginning of the story of King Arthur.

If, however, you are looking for a reasonably fun, short story for a child who is past "Hop on Pop" but not ready to read anything much more complex, you will be very well pleased. The story is simple, but reasonably engaging, the vocabulary is also simple, and the illustrations are decent. This is the first "Hello Reader!" book I have bought for my 2nd grader for use in home schooling, but it will definitely not be the last.

A review for this edition
The other review on this page mistakenly refers to this edition as the novel by T. H. White. Its not. This edition is a short adapation for young children of how King Arthur became king. Maccrone's Arthur is a young boy, and he is "tricked" by Merlin into freeing the sword from the stone. Boddy's illustrations are great.

EXCELLENT!
Hey everyone out there! READ THIS BOOK! it is boring in some parts, but still good! This shows that T.H. White was an excellent author! He can spin magic with his fingers as well as J.K. Rawling and Brian Jacques! (Although they came after him!)

Good introduction to the King's Indian
I found this introduction to the King's Indian to be excellent. I do not ordinarily play the King's Indian, so I can't compare really say if the variations were complete or not, but I feel much more comfortable with the general ideas of the KI now than I was before I read the book.

I'm very rapidly becoming a fan of the starting out: series from everyman, and can't recommend them highly enough for someone who wants a very broad overview of an opening. Once you find what you like, you can get more specialized opening books. Drawbacks? The main one is the lack of a variation index. I'd place level of book to be in the 1200-1600 range, but really suitable for anyone who wants an overview of the main ideas behind the principle variations.

The first book on the KID for anyone
Joe Gallagher's book Starting Out: The Kings Indian Defense, is a marvelous openings book for beginners and intermediate players alike. Gallagher focuses on the important things like the ideas behind the moves, the strategies, the tactical ideas that develop in the various structures and variations of the KID.

The KID is one of the most important defenses in chess, and has been played by many great champions including Kasparov and Fischer. Fischer in fact used it exclusively throughout his chess career. The KID offers black a fighting chance for more than a draw against d4, and is flexible enough to be used against many other non e4 openings.

GM Gallagher presents the newest lines in a clear manner, He offers suggestions as to what variation might be best for you the reader. He provides invaluable tips and warnings throughout the book. The first 4 chapters are on the Classical Variation. He follows that with a chapter each on the Samisch, Fianchetto, Four Pawns, and Averbakh variations. The last two chapters are devoted to white's early h2-3, and "other" systems.

While this book is not meant to be a thorough treatist on the KID, it is an excellent starting place, and allows the reader to begin playing the KID well, quickly. This book is supposed to be a beginners guide to the KID, not a beginners guide to opening a chess game. However, a beginner would do well to jump into this book and this defense quickly after blitzing through a good beginners book like Capablanca's Chess Fundamentals.

Everyman's Starting Out series looks like a good one. I love this book and have since ordered Starting Out: The Caro Kann also by Joe Gallagher (Since I also play the Caro, and have for years), and have recently ordered Starting Out: The Sicilian by John Emms since I am searching for a more aggresive defense to e4 to complement my d4 KID repertiore.

In closing, I highly recommend this book, and suggest following it up with Mastering the Kings Indian Defense By Robert Bellin and Pietro Ponzetto. After that plnge into more complicated theory based works if you desire more, but thoses two volumes alone should serve you well for a long time, and help make you a dangerous player verses d4.
