the marvelous misanthrope
Florence King has a winning way with words and a rapier sharp wit; a rare soul who lives and writes by her own set of rules, few subjects are spared her criticism, as she pokes holes in the politically correct culture of the day.
Following in the tradition of her mother who was a "muleskinner cusser", Miss King decries the "decline and fall of profanity" which has dwindled down to a few meager 4 letter words. She also has much to say about the pandering of the "Helpists", "personality over character", her aversion to children, and more.

Being one myself, I thoroughly enjoyed Chapter 4, "Spinsterhood is Powerful". She says in this chapter: "I am often accused of being an anti-feminist, and my name is mud at Ms. Magazine, but in truth my whole life has been a feminist statement. The conflict lies not in my outlook and attitudes but in the definition of feminism that has been foisted on America in the late twentieth century".
Chapter 16, about her foray into the lusty romance novel genre (which she wrote under the pseudonym of Laura Buchanan) is hilarious, as are her efforts to write a magazine piece on the work of John Updike.

This collection of 18 essays was originally published in '89, and is a good example of her cynical but humorous viewpoint. Though dreadfully missed as a contributor to National Review Magazine, where she has recently taken her leave (her "Misanthrope's Corner" had graced the back page for decades), her books will continue to delight me, in their uniqueness and passionate spirit of independence.

A purely superb book- straight shots of wit throughout
This is simply a fine book. There exists not another fine wit like this anywhere, now that Mencken is dead.

George Will wrote of Miss King- "If Mencken were alive, he would be her". This is the highest praise imagineable, and well deserved.

Miss King is to prose as Elton John is to rock piano. Do not overlook this book.

Terrific story with a lot of history
When someone gave me a copy of Ghenghis Khan, I was sure it would be awful. Who wants to learn about this powerful man? I read it out of curiousity and have to admit it was gripping. Ghenghis Khan himself was of Eur-Asian descent with red hair. He amassed a enormous military machine to conquer the Asian world. The book is filled with glorious historical detail that seems to be very well reserached including the land descriptions. I was impressed. In addition, the author, Florence Prusmack, slowly reveals a fascinating personality in Khan. He was a military genius, charismatic leader, wonderful husband and lover, playful and strong father besides being a very moral man. I truly was fascinated with the insights into this man. I recommend the book as a solid, gripping read for anyone who loves interesting characters, and good historical detail.

Sisterhood is Hilarious
When Sisterhood Was in Flower may be out of print as a single title, but it is available, in its entirety, in The Florence King Reader (which also contains excerpts from King's other books, book reviews, and uncollected essays), so mouse on over and order it. Sisterhood begins with the line "Call me Isabel.", which says a lot right there. Isabel, who has escaped from Virginia to Boston in 1971, falls in with a pair of most unlikely roommates, a cat named Quadrupet (and a pig named Farnsworth), the Don't Tread on Me feminist commune, the Sword and Scabbard porn-publishing company (don't miss their twelve author's guidelines, most of which can't be repeated in a public place), an inflatable doll, an enormous cauldron of scrapple, a raving survivalist, an Episcopalian priest -- but I don't want to give away all Isabel's secrets. I laughed out loud at Isabel's driving test, the court record involving the inflatable doll, the scarpple chase, and more scenes than I can count. Funniest thing I've read in years.

Build a Fence Around the South; You'd Have a Big Madhouse
Florence King and Molly Ivins are the two funniest contemporary American writers. Miss King writes for the _National Review_, and Ms. Ivins for _The Progressive_.

When I moved to the South to attend graduate school, I dutifully read _The Mind of the South_, to ready myself. I was utterly unprepared nevertheless. I simply had never met people who talked about their ancestors, or didn't know the price of a movie ticket because: "Mah escort always buys the tickets!"

Then, a kind soul told me to read _Southern Ladies and Gentleman_. After reading it, nothing Southern surprised me. Thanks to Miss King, I knew about the tombstone twitch, i.e. geneaologists who desperately wanted to prove they had royal blood, self-rejuvenating virgins, why you never, ever cross
a Dowager, Rock or a Dear Old Thing--three varieties of southern old ladies, and the Pert Plague, that is the tendency of some southern women to shriek loudly and at length about the strangest things. This behavior will greatly puzzle anyone who is a stranger to the south. If you read _Southern Ladies and Gentlemen_, gentle reader, you will UNDERSTAND.

So, if you are about to spend substantial amounts of time south of the Mason-Dixon line, spare yourself much anxiety, and read this book. I predict that once you have read this title, you will immediately want to read everything Miss King has written.

It's a comical examination of the south, written with a stilleto rather than a pen. And yet, that stilleto is an elegant instrument. Florence King is a wonderful writer.

Miss King, I beg of you, write another book, please. Soon.

not to be missed
In this book which candidly reveals every detail of existence in the southern lifestyle, I have found more unforgettable humor and perceptions than any other form of entertainment I have yet witnessed (barring Ellen Degeneras' latest HBO comedy special). It is as if King just sat down one day, with a boiling sense of her troubled but well protected youth, and wrote. Wrote endlessly and without thinking, just sketched the facts and did not leave anything out for the sake of being proper. Stories of people who"are just staying awhile" and how southern homes are full of people who took two years to drink a glass of milk. She explains that "Sears sells more camp mattresses and foam rubber pallets in the south thatn anywhere else in the country." Her honesty concerning her parents, her horrific and clinical accounts of Southern myths regarding pregnancy and sex and all that nasty stuff, her shere generosity in sharing truths of human nature, all work together to form a wonderfully magestic and important work of art. Read this book. please.

Florence is the best!
Southern Ladies and Gentlemen was the first book by Miss King that I read. Since that time several years ago I have read every title I could find. S L&G is a laugh out loud, wipe the tears from your eyes look at a group of people that I have always thought to be just a little boring. How wrong I was. After looking at them through Miss King's eyes and with the help of her biting humor and mastery of the language, I always look forward to my travels in the south. It seems I can almost point out the folks in Miss King's book and I find myself trying to classify them according to her "system". I'm a professional pilot and although I usually have one of Miss King's books with me to read on layovers, I don't dare peek at one when I'm on the flight deck. Belly laughs aren't appreciated there.

You don't have to hate people to love Florence King
I resubmit my review, to link with my current list.

The "failed Southern lady" sets off into history, searching out other members of her own kind. This results in some intriguing character sketches of people like Ambrose Bierce, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Dian Fossey, and other famous people-haters. She verges on preciousness in places, as in the interweaving of Nixon's career with a poem by a French courtier. But the book is full of her acidic well-readness, and is endlessly quotable. The introduction is a great exposition--maybe the only one in popular literature--one what makes and what does not make a misanthrope. Enjoy your bitters!

No "hugees" here!
This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. If you have had too much PC or have had it up to here with cloying sentimentality, or you just had too much "other people", get this book. If you like Dorothy Parker, H.L. Mencken, Ambrose Bierce, Grouch Marx, etc., you will love this book. Miss King spares no one and pulls no punches.

Great Joyous Life-Affirming Comedy
How can a book about misanthropy be joyful and life-affirming? Because Florence lets you know you're not alone. It can be pretty discouraging when everyone you know wants you to smile and be optimistic at all costs. Florence's devastations of the incompetent are the very definition of "catharsis." Mencken, whereever he is, must be green with envy.

I laughed so hard my eyes wouldn't focus
It must have been fate. I'd never heard of Florence King and just happened to find this book while browsing for something for a gift. I read the whole thing in less than 2 days. This is the funniest book I've read in ages, maybe ever. Florence King is a genius with words. The novel included in this book, "When Sisterhood was in Flower" is priceless.

Flo is the best!

I LOVE Florence King and was thrilled when I found this book on the bargain table at a local bookstore. Being from the South myself and being spawned from a long line of women with world-famous wombs, I felt an immediate kinship with her when I first read "Southern Ladies and Gentlemen" years ago.

This collection is a wonderful sampling of King's best work and I recommend it to anyone who (1) is from the South; (2) loves a Southern woman; (3) would like to know more about Scarlett O'Hara's strange relationship with her father; (4) likes to laugh out loud; and (5) has ever wanted the world to just leave you the h*** alone!

King is the world's best misanthrope.....and the world is better for having her here.

You go, girl!

The Mistress of Mendacity makes mavelous mischief
I am angry at Florence King. She hasn't written a book in years and frankly, I am tired of waiting for her next one. Since National Review put a contract out on my life for my unpaid subscription, I am not even given the pleasure of reading her splendid column in the back, which I naturally flip straight to when I can pilfer a copy from the library, who are also gunning for me. In between dodging the collection goons at NR and the shock troops from the library, I would like to have a comforted soul with the immediate purchase of Miss King's newest book, which is five years over due, by my estimation. Where is it, Miss King?

This anthology is, of course, utterly delightfull and one of the rare books that lives up to every expectation built up on the dustcover. King's scrumptuous analogies and meticulous self-editing have created prose I could eat my lunch on, it is so clean and perfected.

The other 'King partisan' I know told me once that people who read her inevitably end up buying all her books. As I am a man given to contrarianism, I balked at the idea and resolved not to be that dreaded monicker- a fan. I further balked when I read her editor's praise of her work in the same vein. Those are the same kinds of praises the moron teachers in my english classes in college gave John Updike for having prose I would not feed to rabid dingos.

But damned if I haven't bought every book in her set. I have, against all good sense, become a thorough fan of this excellent woman's works. She is, simply put, the best prose stylist of the latter half of the twentieth century. Her works are like an elixer on the relentless nature of my hyper-modern Gen-X environment. A good hour long sit down reading of King can dispell an entire week's worth of the New York Times and two months worth of CNN.

In short, buy her book. If you're here reading this review and you're wondering about the possibility of it being a good buy, stop wondering- no one with an ounce of artistic appreciation could possibly feel they had not had money well spent.

And I am wailing and gnashing my teeth to say it, but you will end up buying every single one of her books. If you're the praying sort, pray for two thing- one, that Miss King will write a book real soon, and two, that the doorbell that just rang was not Bill Buckley come looking for his twenty nine dollars.

Beware the Huggybears
This was my first Florence King book. It won't be my last. I laughed my head off reading about Florence's life and family. It seems too funny to be true, which makes it that much better.

You will find yourself identifying with this woman whether you want to or not. Her descriptions of Huggybears, Malkins and Watery Moles will bring names of people you know who fit just those descriptions. It will be hard not to use these words when you talk about others as well.

Florence King is a Virago in my eyes. Don't know what that is? You'll have to read to book to find out. It's a short book and easy to read, but not at all simple.

Wicked, hilarious and rings so true
Having grown up in Chicago with a Southern mother and a Yankee father, I always wondered why my family and its "rearing" techniques seemed so different from those of my peers. Then I read "Confessions," and everything became wonderfully, wickedly, and deliciously clear. I laughed out loud and exclaimed in recognition throughout the book as I saw my Mamaw in Granny, my mother in Mama, my father in Herb, and myself in Florence. Ms. King is a brilliant writer whose observations are at once devastatingly, uproariously accurate yet lovingly conveyed. Her ability to break your heart and make you guffaw through the tears is unique. I have read this book over and over and have lent it to friends all over the country (sometimes it never comes back). Today I am ordering my third copy. I recommend "Confessions" to every reader with wit, intelligence, and a touch of lunacy. It will bring out the Southern in your soul.

Wonderful - A unique reading experience
Want to know what a Huggybear is? Or a Malkin? Or a Watery Mole? Or a Virago? You'll have to read Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady. Florence King (no relation to Stephen, I would add!) has a uniquely warm humor and a style that she can truly call her own. I roared with laughter in places, I choked back a shiver or two in places, I gurgled with contentment in places, and I reveled in the amazing writing that has become Florence King's trademark. What a remarkable lady. From a Southern family, raised in the racially segregated Washington, D.C. of old, King follows her own life through college, graduation and into adulthood, where she finds she is considerably more attracted to her own sex than the other. Though written in a style that is hilariously funny and relatively light-hearted, Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady also deals with deeper issues, like the definition of femininity. This added dimension makes the book all the more interesting, even for a non-female person (maybe ESPECIALLY for a non-female person!), and for those of us who enjoy something a little more cerebral than 'Noddy meets Goldilocks', Florence King's wonderful insights into growing up (and dealing with her sexuality) is a perfect companion to a blazing fire and a glass of good wine.

Good Book
I found this a very helpful book. It had clear pictures and a lot of information about each piece. Even though it included a great number of pieces, there is plenty of room for another edition, and I hope the author includes only items NOT listed in the first book. I have other collector books where the second edition is mostly a repeat of the first edition, with only a smattering of new items added.

A Fabulous Reference Guide....
I have been an avid glass collector for years, and just recently began collecting vintage tableware and cookware too. This is my first book on the subject, and the informational text is only surpassed by the wonderful pictures of all my favorite pieces that I currently own, or hope to soon. This book covers alot of ground on the history of each piece, collection and patterns that are out there. In this particular editon, I found the section on Early American Prescut and Wexford, two of my favorites in pattern, particularly informational. I also found out information on some pieces I've had for years and knew nothing about too, which is always a fun and enlightening experience. ..............While the pricing gives you a rough idea of what pieces are worth, you need demand and a a buyer to get the value. Of course that is only when a piece is mint. .............. Price guide aside, if you are just an a person like me, who enjoys hunting down and amassing collectible glass and glassware for the sheer joy of surrounding yourself in it's beauty, as opposed to those folks who just buy everything they can find to make a profit, or do a bit of both, this and all Gene Florence editions will no doubt fascinate you too.

This should be THE main guide book for Fire-King!
I just love Gene Florence's information on collectibles so I purchased this book as well.I was wowed again! This book is VERY in depth about Fire-King and the different types out there. If you are confused about which piece is what -this book will help guide you! There are so many items that I had never seen or heard of before listed and pictured here.It has several color photos on each page!
Just a wonerful book overall!

Great Reference Book!
This book has more than paid for itself in helping me recognize fire king and genuine old glass.

Until I purchased Gene Florence's book, I used black & white reference books. Those are useless to me.

This wonderful book has helped me determine if shaker lid and fireking flour piece went together (did not-flour shaker originally had a flat shaker lid the color of the writing on side not silver aluminum); if the "yellow" plate in a fire king design was old (was not (did not come in yellow) - but that yellow piece was made from fire king mold - one step up from out and out reproduction); and whether or not my 10 pieces of bakeware (some with lids) and marked Fire King were rare or reproductions. On the 10 piece baking set, I ended up e-mailing Gene Florence, and he responded that my piece was not rare - or did it even appear anywhere. The pieces are selling Very slowly - so they must not be very special.

The book is difficult to understand how to match pricing & pictures at first, but well worth the effort. I am comfortable with the process now.

If you collect or sell fire king - you need this book!

But the "More" in the first edition needed more research.
For the most part this book is an excellent resource for identifing Fire-King glassware and I would recommend it highly along with all of the author's other books. I own them all! As a specialist collector of the Anchor Hocking Early American Prescut pattern (10000pcs), I must say that I feel that some of the Prescut items listed are somewhat rarer than the book would suggest. There are also quite a few more items available in this particular pattern than are listed. I view the book's section on Prescut as another of this well known author's courageous attempts to chart previously uncharted waters and I'm sure that subsequent editions of this book will include course corrections.

Don't miss any books by this author!
Another winner for Gene Florence. Wouldn't be without his books. Beautiful, color pictures on nearly every page. I have read this book and all of his others over and over again.
