The life and times of Coretta Scott King
This biography of Corretta Scott King actually does spend considerably more time talking about the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. than her more famous husband. Cythnia Klingel tells the story of how how Corretta grew up in Alabama, where her father's mill and the family home were both burned to the ground by racists. Scott was attending the New England Conservatory of Music when she met King, who was studying at Boston University. Klingel then covers the involvement of both Kings in the Montgomery Bus Boycott inspired by the civil disobedience of Rosa Parks in 1956 (I should note that while Klingel gives credit to King for coming up with the idea of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, other books credit E. D. Nixon with organizing the original boycott, with King then taking over the more prolonged study), but reduces the rest of the civil rights movement to two brief pages before turning to King's assassination in 1968. However, this is appropriate because it was after her husband's death that Coretta Scott King became more social active. The book details her various accomplishments, including pushing for a national holiday honoring her slain husband. This biography is part of the Journey to Freedom series, whose avowed goal is to educate and inform children about the achievements and contributions of America's most noted African Americans. Students interested n studying her life for Black History Month will find lots of useful information in this book. In comparison to the individuals described in other Journey to Freedom volumes Coretta Scott King's accomplishments might not be as significant, but there is certainly something to be said for the way she has turned personal tragedy into triumph in a public role she never really wanted.

Three and a half...starts slow but gets better
I've been on a Tudor reading binge lately, and this teen novel about Mary Queen of Scots is part of it. It is the story of the tumultuous reign and disastrous marriages of the young Queen, as told by her female jester, La Jardiniere--born Nicola Ambruzzi, orphan and traveling player.

Nicola is given her position as fool just before Mary's husband, the king of France, dies. Having no reason to stay in France, Mary goes back to her native Scotland and sets herself up as queen. Nicola goes with her, serving as a courtier, and also as a friend, during the years between Mary's return to Scotland and her exile in England.

The book starts slowly, and is almost but not quite boring until the murder of David Riccio, a close friend of Mary and Nicola. Then it picks up, starting with a touching scene of Nicola visiting David's grave. After this beautiful interlude, the real action begins. Nicola must keep Darnley, Mary's frat-boy husband, from usurping the throne, and later has to help Mary escape from imprisonment on a remote island. The second half of the book is much more interesting than the first, but I suppose it would have made no sense without the background of the first half. *shrug*

Overall, a decent novel about Queen Mary for middle-schoolers or thereabouts. It might even encourage you to read more about the Tudor/Stuart period.

FABULOUS story of a female fool!
I portray a female court jester with a reenactment troupe in Williamsburg (VA) and bought this book in order to gain some insight to my character. I can't begin to tell you what a fabulous book it is! This is not a "baby" book, written only for tiny children - rather it's written in a way that anybody will enjoy reading it. Children will love the book, but it's written for kids on much higher reading levels - I'd recommend it to those in middle and high school, or younger kids who read on advanced levels. It's nearly 400 pages, but I had such a hard time putting it down that I've breezed through it in two days. Nicola "La Jardiniere" is presented to us as a very real human being. She shows us that even court jesters were people, and they had the same emotions as the rest of the court. This poor child has been through the ringer in her young lifetime! She goes from being abused by her uncle, while performing in his troupe, to suddenly being thrust into the role of the court fool for Mary, Queen of Scots. It's frightening for her, to say the least. But, with her wit and charm, she manages to make the Queen's life a little more bearable. I was especially touched in the scene where (something happens - that I won't disclose) and the poor jester throws herself into the Queen's arms and bursts into tears. The Queen merely comforted poor Nicola, and you could FEEL the tender affection between these two ladies. Anyone who's read up on Mary, Queen of Scots KNOWS what her eventual fate was, but you need to read the book to find out how Nicola dealt with such a tragic loss. She's a very brave girl, indeed!
Since reading the book, I have a whole new insight into how to portray MY character at the next feast!

A book to keep forever
I got this book and could hardly put it down for the next three days. "Queen's Own Fool" is about a young girl, Nicola, who just happens to meet Mary Stuart. Nicola is a traveling performer and then becomes Queen Mary's fool. Nicola follows the Queen everywhere, including into imprisonment. She is there when Francis, Mary's husband and good friend, dies to comfort her. She travels to Scotland and reminds the Queen that she is only mortal. Nicola befriends few people, but the ones she does meet prove to be more that true friends. This book had me laughing at nine-thirty at night and practically crying an hour later. I would definatly recommend this book to anyone who is the least bit interested in Tudor England or Mary, Queen of Scots. I would also recommend "Mary, Queen of Scots, Queen Without A Country" too. This book may seem a bit large for some younger readers, but don't stress, it will end when it ends. When I finished, I practically started to cry because I of what happens to Nicola and the Queen. Nowing the end of Mary's life didn't help at all either. Read this book if you want to be touched deeply. Some might not like it, but I was searching for a good book at Mary, Queen of Scots, and this was just what I was looking for. This could be read by a reader as young as eight and up. I am not sure if younger readers would be able to understand some of the words or be able to read such a long book, but if you might read it to a young person, but explanation might be needed. I WILL NEVER BOOK THIS BOOK IN A BOX AND THROW IT INTO THE BASEMENT, GARAGE, OR SHED. A MAGNIGICENT READ!!!!!!!!!!!1

My fourth grade students are really enjoying Smith's books.
They have already read A Mouse Called Wolf, Babe, and School Mouse. The good thing about Smith's books is they are enjoyable to children of most reading abilities. He is a descriptive writer and uses words the kids can understand. My children are appreciating remembering themselves learning to read through the eyes of Flora. They are enjoying her adventures in school.

This is the best book in the world
I think this book is good because it had mouse that did extraordinary things in it and some could read. And thay had school just like the other kids.

Don't Miss The School Mouse!
The School Mouse by Dick-King Smith

Have you have seen a mouse read? This book is about a mouse named Flora that lives in a school. Once Flora watches a little kid read in Kindergarten, Flora is really curious about reading. But her family sees no use in it. Flora tells them it is very important, especially when Flora finds a bag marked Poison!

I loved this book because it was so fun to see how a mouse can read in Kindergarten and 1st grade. I also like this book because it had such good words that I could imagine the pictures.

I think the author wants to show that reading is very important. Also I think the author wants to show that even if you are a mouse, learning is important.

Wonderful
I read this book several months ago, and I loved it. The whole attitude Elske has and the way she looks at life is so naive and innocent - but not annoyingly so. I thought the book was baeatifully written, and this is the book that made me read On fortunes wheel and Jackaroo(which are both about the kingdom and by Cynthia Voigt also). I wholly reccomend this book to anyone, even if you don't like fantasy.

perfect adventure story for everyone
Clean, effective writing and a great plot are trademarks of Cynthia Voigt's work, and the more she writes, the better she gets. I read some of her earlier books beginning around the age of eleven -- Homecoming, Dicey's Song, Seventeen Against the Dealer, Jackaroo, The Callendar Papers -- and I've never forgotten them. Voigt doesn't shy away from complex, adult issues; instead she makes them challenging and yet accessable for anyone.

I saw ELSKE on this site and couldn't resist buying it to see if Voigt was still as good as ever. Turns out she's even better -- I've read all the books in the "Kingdom" series and this, though I love the others, is my favorite. It's an adventure story about two young women making their own way in a world against them, and it's got everything: "primitive" tribal customs, plots against a royal family, narrow escapes, war, even love. It's got morals, too, but Voigt skillfully avoids hitting you over the head with them. All told, it's as great for adults as for kids.

NOTE: I would recommend that any "kid" reading it be old enough/mature enough to understand and handle things like rape and sexual innuendo, which are in no way graphic or overdone, but certainly are important elements in the story.

A compelling story that adds to the puzzle of the kingdom.
Elske is the next part of the puzzle as Voigt reveals piece by piece the perspectives, history, and tales of the kingdom. The story Elske certainly holds you attention, while the main character is fiesty and new to her surrondings. A short summary is:

Elske tossed into an un-known world makes her way as a hated enemy. Surprisingly enough attracts many types of friends, through her innocence as well as decieving appearence. As she turns away many situations where she could live a peacefull life, only to serve a "feindly princess." Beriel a girl fighting for what was hers as well as mustering a dark secret..... Together they make do with each other and even befriend each other.

The one thing about this that makes it so appealing is that Elske is not your average distressed maiden making it through life suffering, but always content while sharing a romance with a good hearted man of higher or lower status. Beriel and Elske's characters are very captivating.... You'll love this book if you are a fan of or have read: Jackaroo, On Fortunes Wheel, or Wings of a Falcon. New readers will enjoy this book just as much because no other former "tid bits of the last books plot" are key facts.

The Cannibal Galaxy (King Penguin)

Average review score:

I would have liked Ozick to be in the room with me...

. . . Yes, the novel is well written, and Ms. Ozick certainly has a highly developed vocabulary... or at least she has access to a good thesaurus. . . .

The main point of the book is that while some of us dream, strive and struggle for intellectual greatness, we usually wind up being just a bunch of ordinary folks. How silly, how depressing! What unrealistic, high falootin' ideas of greatness this woman has! She illustrates her idea of ordinariness by telling us that unless we're great we're doomed to be mere "plumbers". Don't plumbers think? She never passes up a chance to heft her great intellectual superiority complex on the lower forms of life that she and, apparantly, her characters are destined to rub elbows with.

I found Ozick's tone infuriatingly patronizing and false. What all the hubbub about her is all about, I'll never understand.

A timeless story of overcoming inter-personal conflicts.
This novel of Ozick's deals with the constant struggle of achieving perfection. The main character, Joseph, is a Jewish-Frenchman living in the middle of America. He had faced many hardships during the first decades of his life. When he finally is able to overcome them and enjoy the blessings of his emancipation, he cannot let go of his own sense of failure. The relationships he has in the latter part of his life are not fufilling because he focuses on the lack in these people, not thier ability. Joseph fails to value people as individuals. As a result, he is destined to be ordinary and unhappy instead of trying to be extraordinary. At the end of the novel he is given a chance to change his outlook on life. This novel was an easy read and full of beautiful, descriptive imagery.
