A plethora of pleasures
You don't have to be an afficionado of contemporary poetry, or an art lover, to appreciate the many delights housed within the aluminum slip case of this work. But if you happen to be either, or both, this book is a must.

The "book" has, in this case, evolved well beyond the concept of an art tome. The joining of music, poetry and lovingly accurate reproductions under one cover makes the circumnavigation of this opus is a particularly rich eexperience. Which is not to say that listening to the music , or dipping into one poem, is not an entirely satisfying moment by itself.

Be prepared, however: this gesamtwerk is big, and will not fit into an ordinary bookcase! The paintings being reproduced to scale has dictated the extra large format, but the extraordinarily accurate pictorial results are worth the extra weight.

Just when you thought realism was dead
This is a gorgeous book by a man who in the future will be credited with debunking all the art critics who since the 1950s have been shouting to themselves that Realism is dead, or the ones that still shout "painting is dead." Gerhard Richter breaks all the rules of "being an artist." He has worked in a variety of styles, refusing to produce a "style" as often artists are supposed to do. In his ealy photorealistic -paintings Richter copied ordinary, found images onto canvas, but gave them an indistinct appearance. Again, by working directly from photographs, he manages to debunk all the criticism that such techniques often bring. This subversive realism is now more evident than ever, in these later, almost fuzzy works that still manage to knock the visual senses as if shouting: "Long Live Painting - Long Live Realism!"

A Feast for Eyes and Ears
I've only recently become acquainted with the range of Gerhard Richter's work, but the series of eight abstract paintings which are being celebrated here are enough to justify his reputation for me, and the sheer richness and resolution of their presentation in this book is of a standard I've never come across anywhere. Elegant, sensuous and gorgeous, this is more than a 'typical' art book in manners large and small; includes insightful essays by writers like Dave Hickey, poetry, and a CD by Bill Frisell with a string trio that's a lot more quirky and edgy than his recent stuff, in a good way (no banjos). The book's editor, David Breskin, has done an amazing job - the aluminum slipcase is a pretty sharp touch, too.

Changing the Meaning of Drawing
This fabulous collction of virtually every one of the most vital contemporary artist is, simply put, a must. The talent and diversity of these works are astounding and envigorating. The title "Drawing" conjures up images of simple sketches, pencil works and other trite mediums of drawing. However, these works prove that drawing, the element of art that is the product of the artist's mind directly onto a surface, is fulfilled in every way. Works like "Detail from Cremaster 3" by Matthew Barney and other works by Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt, Anish Kapoor, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray and many others make this mini-volume a treasure worth investigating.

a gift to our eyes and brain
ever look at pictures and wonder how the photographer was ever given permission to photograph such intimate things? This book is another example of Goldin's ability to let people's guards down and really understand (in an aesthetic and emotional level) her subjects. It is a sucessful collaboration with text and image!

Best, most complete collection of Mitchell's works.
The narrative is interesting, but the main purpose for this book, at least for me, is a collection of pictures of her work. This book has the most complete collection of her work that I've found. The plates are large, beautfiul, and very well done, allowing you to see lots of detail! If you are interested in Joan Mitchell you should absolutely get this book.

Another Twin Palms Triumph
This is a beautiful book with images of domestic and farm animals admixed with unclad humans. The pairing works on many levels, and this is no marketing ploy to pique our interest.....animals and people emerge as equally beautiful, flawed, failed, strong and ultimately fallible. Peter Hujar I imagine to have been patient, curious and possessing great humility. These deceptively simple images are possibly not widely known, but deserve a larger audience, and Twin Palms has once again produced an outstanding volume of work by a photographer with a great eye. Poignant and exalted, the photos in this book make it one of the best photography monographs of recent times. Klaus Kertess' introduction is appreciative, concise and informative.

Basquiat at its Best
If you are looking for a wonderful combination of Basquiat's work and biography, this is the book to own. This book is full of many beautiful color plates of his work, as well as the story of his short, successful, but tragic life as an artist who had his brief moment in the sun before succumbing to the drugs.

New York Graffiti Artist turns SuperStar!
THE best book on Basquiat out there! A very talented New York artist that started out doing graffiti on the New York Subways as SAMO and instantly became famous after one day meeting Andy Warhol and giving him a postcard of his artwork. They became quick friends and Warhol had a great influence on his very short career even though Jean-Michel's work is totally different. Jean Michel died tragically from a drug overdose. Cool little known fact - He dated Madonna! Great photos of the Jean-Michel and an incredible extended chronology in the back of the book. Best yet info on the artist existing anywhere in the the book. Color plates of his art work are superb, large, and mostly one per page, incredible color. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of Jean-Michel or his friends Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, or Andy Warhol.

Basquiat wasn't afraid to be his own man
This is a great book with many of Basquiat's paintings and drawings. It also has various essays by art critics and people who knew him. I suppose the reviewers who slammed Basquiat also think anybody could knock over a couple of paint buckets and be Jackson Pollock. The genius of Basquit in my mind is his ability to create truly beautiful paintings while painting in a seemingly uncontrolled, primitive (I hate that word) fashion. The way he layered colors, and added details is incredible. My favorite is "Untitled (Skull)" 1981. Here is a brilliant example of how Basquiat combines dissarray, ugliness, harmony, and beauty all into the same striking painting. I know Basquiat idolized Hendrix and ultimately went out much like he did, unable to cope with his talent and the attention it brought. To me Basquiat's painting very much mirrors Hendrix's musical talents. They both created wild, noisy, seemingly unharnessed, unpolished art. But to the careful, sensitive observer the true beauty and magic is revealed.
