I can not put this book down
Excellent Read! This book starts with 20 tips for success. Kemmons' sucess examplifies those tips. He is so hardworking, never afraid of making mistakes. As he said, everyone makes mistakes only a fool makes the same mistakes twice but he himself made same mistakes twice. Even mistake pays.
He did not become rich in one night as those in the internet bubble. He was already a millionaire before the Hiliday Inn. Even after he retired from Holiday Inn, he was still creating enterprises.
Makes me want to act on my ideas.

You too can do anything you desire!
Excellent read! I enjoy good business bios, and this ranks up there with the best of them. After you read this book you'll know what the word persistance means!

EXCELLENT autobiography and business tome to boot!
This book not only chronicles the life of Kemmons, but expands upon the ideology behind the business of Holiday Inn and other ventures. Not only an enjoyable read, but an EXCELLENT guide for an entrepreneur such as myself. Exceptional in EVERY respect!

It's a Wonderful Life
What an incredible family! This book is not a biography, nor is it a book about running a business. It is a look at the life of an extraordinary man, John Tigrett, and his business and personal dealings with people from Glenn Miller to Winston Churchill, from Jimmy Hoffa to Fred Smith It is a success story filled with everything you would want in a novel. It is filled with stories of passionate lovers, great tragedies, and incredible successes. He was raised in a small town in Tennessee yet John played a part in changing the world in so many ways.

If we could view the world without John's influence over the past 50 years, how different would it be? From the leaders of World War II to the business world of the 1990's, from the toys we played with as a child to the skyline of Memphis, TN, John played a role in each of these.

However, this book is not about John only. It is about his family, his friends, and the many people he met along the way.
He speaks with such pride about his mother who struggled to raise her son after his father left. He talks about his uncle and aunt who helped his mother. The same uncle that changed the way the South traveled through the development of the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio railroad. He speaks about his children; two of whom died tragically and much too young. He writes with great pride about his son Issac and the hospital he build in India with the proceeds from the sale of the Hard Rock Cafe's. And his passion for his two wives and his youngest son Kerr let's you know that he was truly a blessed man....What a wonderfil life!

Tales of fascinating people written by a friend
How did a toy maker from a town in West Tennessee become an international financier and the colleague of some of the world's most wealthy and powerful men? Read this fascinating book and find out! The stories of John Burton Tigrett's many friends are the stories of modern history: Churchill, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Howard Hughes, Jimmy Hoffa, Armand Hammer, Sir James Goldsmith, J. Paul Getty, Bunker Hunt, Brezhnev, Ross Perot, Ronald Reagan, Federal Express, the Hard Rock Cafe, and many more! This collection of vignettes and tales could also be sub-titled "A Life Well Spent." The reader sees not only well crafted word pictures of the many interesting people that Mr. Tigrett has known over the years, but also a picture of the author himself, as someone that YOU would wish to count among your friends. He appears as the type of man that you could call from a jail in some banana republic, knowing that he would move heaven and earth to get you out speedily! The! author of this most interesting book is the father of Isaac Tigrett, who founded the Hard Rock Cafes and House of Blues Restaurants. This reviewer knew the author when he (the reviewer) was a child, and was a friend of the author's late son, Hewitt. If you are interested in seeing the very human side of some of the movers and shakers of the post- World War II twentieth century, read this book!

A Bully Father: Theodore Roosevelt's Letters to His Children

Delightful!
"A Bully Father" is a delightful insight into a remarkable American family. The first portion of the book is a biographical narrative of Theodore Roosevelt, with a strong emphasis on his family life. The remainder is a collection of letters from TR to his children. Although the letters are identified by topic, they are otherwise left to speak for themselves.

These letters were generally written to his children while they were away at school. The letters are treasures from the Age of Letters. Things which today would be communicated in person, by telephone or e-mail were, in TR's day, communicated and preserved in correspondence. The letters cover a wide variety of topics. Events of daily life of the Roosevelt family and evaluations, favorable and unfavorable, of the child constitute the majority of the letters. Nothing was too small for TR's attention. Horse and carriage rides, playing with children or wrestling with Japanese wrestlers, his tennis partners and White House visitors are all recorded for our enjoyment. TR also used these letters to give vocational advice as well as to comment on public events of the day. TR also expounds on his views on literature and history, as well as his views on family values. The classical literature which he and "Mother" read to the children are mind boggling!

This is a book which is enjoyable to read and also makes you think. TR's relationship with his children and his interactions with them provide a standard against which we can measure our own lives. Read this book and treasure it!

A shining light across the century
Teddy shines through as a true inspiration to all fathers. I read this book, and then "played bear" with my children.

The Essence of Fatherhood
The greatest legacy a father can leave the world is his children. Theodore Roosevelt is more popularly remembered in history as the great Trust Buster and the hero of San Juan Hill, but his greatest contribution was something that until this book, has been overlooked, the impact of a loving and nurturing father on his children.

Reading this book, one gets the unmistakable impression that Teddy Roosevelt was infinitely more concerned about the lives of his children than he ever was about the affairs of the Presidency. Readers are left with the impression that at a moments notice, he would give up everything for the welfare of even one of his kids. What a legacy to leave for history.

In an age where families are under siege and children are becoming more like trophies that are displayed, Teddy Roosevelt's letters to his children shine as a beacon pointing us to what being a parent is all about, raising, loving, and nurturing our children.

What ever happened to writing letters? The art of letter writing has all but passed away. In T.R.'s time reading letters was a family event, something that was eagerly anticipated by the entire family. Today's family is forced to deal with the constant barrage of faxes, e-mails and cellular phones. Family conversation has been reduced to digital bytes rather than meaningful conversation. George Washington may have been the father of our nation, but Teddy Roosevelt had a far more lasting impact, he was a father to his children.

The best technical history of the Manhattan Project.
The other review nicely describe this gem, but makes it sound like something only a scientist could understand. I'd just like to add that any intelligent person will have no trouble following this lucid account of the first two years of Los Alamos.

The Greatest Technical Achievement of the 20th Century
This book is THRILLING in the scope and depth of its description of HOW the bomb was made. This was a unique historical event in that the best brains in the world, stimulated by a sense of extreem urgency and given, in effect, unlimited physical and financial resources accomplished in the space of three years somthing that in the 1930's was considered as Science Fiction.

The book is highly readable and understandable by non technical people. This book is proof that "once upon a time" we did things "Right the First Time" in this country. An outstanding historical and technical account of the "ultimate" invention.

Story of one of the most complex projects ever undertaken
Very well written and does not overwhelm the reader with technical minutia. This is an excellent companion to Richard Rhodes' The Making of the Atomic Bomb and will please any student of the history of science.

Fleet Street Piskie
Published in Paperback by The Pentland Press Ltd (12 October, 1994)
Author: Robert Kerr-Doiren

Great Read!
Who is this Robert Kerr-Doiren? His little character kept me chuckling, HE kept me puzzling, and I just kept turning the pages to see what comes next. Not for those conditioned to the 1990s standard hero, who takes on the world and somehow saves the whole world, but the best read I've had in a long long time.

This is excellent, fast-paced,well-written: worth the time!
Piskie is a marvellous read. The plots are intricate, and THEY WORK. There are no late entrants in the 'villian sweepstakes', no abritary gimmicks, yet you'll be hard pressed to find the solution prior to the final chapter in any of three stories. The writing is fast-paced, the dialogue sharp as tacks. Piskie himself is smashing. Not your 'Nineties Man' for sure. On the one hand, witty and urbane. On the other, cynical and mildly deceitful. No wonder his partner keeps arguing with him, yet lets him back into her bed. I would! And these two are backed up by very colourful bit characters. Take Carla, the whore in the final stages of AIDs. She'll haunt your dreams: she does mine. What WOULD I do in her shoes? Or Piskie's for that matter? And who could fail to like old Gorby Collins? If you've spent 5 minutes in London, you've seen on any streetcorner. For humour -- try Piskie's fight with an axe-wielding hulk in a stripclub; or his repeated assaults on a drainpipe one rainy night! This stuff is bril! Honest!

London's darkside, with humour
I'd never read anything by Robert Kerr-Doiren until this book, but I can tell you he's spot on. I was raised in the East End, moved to a flat in the West End when I married and now live in Chelsea. His short bio says he's now an ex-pat, but Kerr-Doiren has to be a true Londoner. The short well-phrased descriptions, rather than actual street designations add a surreal flavour - and London is a surreal city. I've eaten in those cafes, dozens of them, even visited those clubs down the years. And the characters!? Wonderful. I've emerged from the tube and bought papers from Gorby Collins!!! Caroline Chambers made the society pages just the other day! If you want the REAL London, with plots you can't dismiss and pages you can't stop turning, this is the book! My god, I've even caught myself chuckling aloud on the train at this stuff!

Informitive and detailed
This book is great for the beginner or the semi-experienced. There is a lot of useful information and detail. Some aspects are outdated but overall the book is very accurate. Keep in mind this is a textbook and it reads like one. However, if auto mechanics is your interest then you should have no problem enjoying this book.

a look into the automotive world
This is a pretty good book for either the inexperienced or master mechanic. I would recommend this book to any person who is limited in knowing the inner wotkings of their cars and would like to know what the mechanic is really talking about. The chapters in this book will give you basic information on how the different systems work in your car from engines to brake systems to drivetrain systems. the second part of the chapter will give you tips on how to troubleshoot and repair your car, if you decide to take the task upon yourself. This book provides highly detailed pictures and diagrams and explains everything in easy to understand terminology.

Incredible... A real page turner
If modern automotive technology fascinates you (as it fascinates me), you will absolutely love it. Duffy really drives home the key points about the computer and electrical systems.

From one enthusiast to another - great job Frank.

Matters for Judgement: An Autobiography
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (1978)
Author: John Robert Kerr

Average review score:

Kerr could bore for Australia
John Kerr was a Judge and later Governor General of Australia. He is famous as he was Governor General during Australias Constitutinal crisis of 1975. On that occasion there was a deadlock between the conservative controlled senate and the labour controlled house of representatives. The Labour party lead by Gough Whitlam had just been forced to an election the previous year by the conservatives and were not keen to go again especially as the economy was not in good shape.

Kerr dismissed the Whitlam Government installed the conservative leader Fraser and called an election. The decision was controversial at the time as it was thought by some that the conservatives would give in and in dismissing Whitlam when he did Kerr handed the conservaties a massive electoral advantage.

More recently Kelly in his book 1975 has critized Kerr on other grounds. That is in his view the failure to comunicate with Whitlam was a serious error.

After teh events Whitlam put out a book attacking Kerr not only for his decision but attacking him as a person suggesting that he was a drunk and a social crawler. This is Kerr's response.

Unfortunately Kerr did not have the gift of the light quip or even the light anything. The book is written in leaden prose and in a tone that is hard to like. It probably now would only be of interest to historians or people who have a high boredom tolerance.

Following the writing of this book, Kerr who had a slight problem with alcohol and who gave a speech at the Melbourne Cup obviously very drunk went into exile moving to Europe.

The social damage done by this episode in Australia's history was repared by the success of the Hawke Labour government and by the parties electoral success in Queensland.

Not a review
This is not a review, I would simply point out that this book should be linked with the former Australian PM, Gough Whitlam, as the author of Matters for Judgement is the one who dismissed Whitlam.
