I Saw Myself
Just as most of the other reviewers mention that they recognize themselves--so did I. From falling into the trap at college of the "dating/love/find-a-husband" culture so prevalent at MSU to the lack of self-esteem I suffered from for speaking my intelligent mind, I see myself and even my young gifted daughter in this book. Buy this book and begin to find the answers for yourself and your young ones. A good beginning place with resources to further your research.

let your light shine
Barbara Kerr's book is of interest to me because of research I did for my book, Where Have All the Smart Women Gone? I did a study of 34 gifted women who had the following in common: a college education, between the ages of 30-50, and identified as gifted by their school systems. We met in focus groups and talked about the gifted label, achievement, and families. The good news was that all of them were grateful for gifted programs. So if you are reading this as a parent of a gifted girl, or are a gifted woman yourself, please buy both books! Kerr is one of the key voices about gifted women, and her book is well worth the read.

Should be required reading for all females
I bought this book because I am very interested in the different ways in which males & females deal with challenges, both at school, & as adults in the workplace. I saw myself in this book many times, in Kerr's descriptions of herself and her classmates. I now realize the traits I need to foster to keep me successful in life, & to nurture my ambition. I learned that ambition is not a "non-feminine" trait, & I now understand why I felt my failures were personal failures & why successes were just "luck", because this is what society in America reinforces. Also, the biographies of successful (prominent) women were excellent. We need more role models & Kerr provides them. Thanks very much to Barbara Kerr for writing this important book!!!

Smart Boys...Smart Book!
This informative book begins with descriptions of gifted boys and explores the relationship of how being gifted may have affected their masculinity. From young boys to the adult gifted male, the authors tell about the milestones and the danger zones for bright boys. Halfway through this excellent book, the authors outline the special challenges for gifted boys like underachievement, being called nerds, and even being a minority gifted male. The authors conclude the book with suggestions on guiding the gifted boys in our lives. They not only deal with the academic challenges that smart boys face, but include their social, emotional and spiritual development, too. The references at the conclusion of each chapter share valuable resources for those interested in further reading on gifted males. The book is well-grounded in research and is enjoyable reading for both parents and educators of the gifted. The authors encourage us to guide these smart boys in our lives as they go for their dreams!

Smart Boys by Barbara Kerr and Sanford Cohn
This book provides everyone who reads it an understanding of the challenges gifted males experience as children and as adults. The stories make readers aware of how we are not all the same and that our individual nature needs to be nourished. If this happens these boys can grow into confident men, if not, their gifts are sadly compromised. Each chapter deals with the specific problems boys have in being as smart as they are and how our culture--be it family or social--needs to become more aware of nurturing the individual aspects of each child's personality so they can develop intoe the totality of who they are meant to be.
The book is very readable and flows through the personal and collective stories that all males--gifted in a variety of ways and from vaiour backgrounds--experience as they struggle to become themselves. We can all learn more about how to treat the unusual and valuable aspects of those gifted boys and men we deal with daily from reading this book.

An Excellent Book for Parents of Gifted Boys
Smart Boys: Talent, Manhood, & The Search for Meaning, by Barbara Kerr (author of Smart Girls) and Sanford Cohn, is a must-have book for parents of boys who are precocious, creative, intense, sensitive and otherwise gifted learners. With all the other books about boys currently on the market, how is this one different? Smart Boys addresses social and emotional issues that are either unique to or more extreme for gifted boys, such as their high levels of sensitivity (which often go against the culture's Boy Code), their tendency to enjoy traditionally "girl" activities as well as boy activities, their sometimes intense intellectual interests that cause them to be branded "nerds," and their need for role models and mentors who provide an alternative vision of what it means to be a man in today's society. Smart Boys also provides valuable background information on the research of gifted boys and an age-by-age guide both to academic needs and to emotional and spiritual development. The authors call for a new vision of compassionate masculinity that includes courage, creativity and commitment. The message that rings most loud and clear from the pages of this book is that we need to allow gifted boys to be themselves, even when, and perhaps especially when, being themselves is different from what society expects boys to be. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves, works with, or has been a gifted boy.

How did this mid-1800's farm-girl ends up in India?
While this true-life story can't compete with the constant thrill-a-minute excitement level of a fictional Tom Clancy novel, the wonderful realities and historical remembrances portrayed here provide a down-to-earth documentation well worth a few hours of your time. The editor provides a unique and historically accurate documentary of the little-known life of her great-grand-mother, Rachel Kerr, mostly from her great-grand-mother's own hand. Rachel was a young farm-girl who married a minister and spent much of her life as a missionary's wife in India in the mid-1800's, far from the family she loved so much. The editor initially provides informative and interesting historical background material about Rachel's youth while growing up in and around Hookstown, Pennsylvania. Hookstown is a very small cross-roads town located in hilly farm-country about 30 miles west of Pittsburgh near the state border with West Virginia. The details of her life in this area can be easily verified through numerous government and individual archive records available today. Even many of the physical locations in and around Hookstown can still be easily traced and located today. Hookstown has now grown a little bit and is an interesting place to visit; but it still remains an out-of-the-way place which doesn't put much stock in trying to keep up with the hectic pace of the rest of the world. After the background has been properly set, the editor then smoothly brings in the real meat of the story through incorporation of an extensive verbatim series of letters written personally by Rachel, coupled with historical commentary where needed. These original letters provide an unusual personal and emotional insight into Rachel's exciting but challenging life as a mother and as a missionary's wife in the extremely dangerous and difficult environment of mid-eighteenth century India. The brief story of how the editor encountered her great-grand-mother's letters is itself a fascinating one. The stories these letters tell bring a real-life perspective to us that the movies have never touched. I became particularly attached to the book when I found out that the subject is my great-great aunt, that all the people she describes are my relatives, and that I grew up in her hometown locale. I also have a large, beautiful cross-stitch done by Rachel Kerr in 1848 at the age of 12. I always cherished that cross-stitch, even as a little boy, but, until I read this book, I only knew that Rachel Kerr was somehow related to me. I found the same beauty and sensitivity in this book that I always admired in that cross-stitch and it confirms to me what a wonderfully bright, talented, and unique person this lady truly was. The best of the "Camp X " series
This book is perfect for any war buff, espeacially those interested in the Canadian role in WWII. Specifically, the role of secrent agents and the infamous spy camp, Camp X. Immigrating from Hungary to Canada, Gelleny tells his story of becoming a Secret Agent and his struggles to stay alive after being captured in Hungary. His story is wonderfully written and supremely interesting. This is the most fascinating book in the Camp X series thus far.

An amazing journey
I have read many books on spiritualism, new age beliefs, ancient practices, etc., and this is one of the few book that I have read from cover to cover without mixing in other books to hold my interest. It pulled me in and took me on an amazing journey with Little Horse... a soulful, heartfelt journey that mesmerized me, touched my heart and brought tears to my eyes. The pages are filled with my notations and underscores. Her telling of the story honors the sacredness of the ancient traditions and beliefs. I will read it again and again with the knowing that, each time, something beautiful will touch my heart as I am ready to receive its wisdom. At times I felt like a voyeur reading a secret diary because of Barbara's amazing honesty and depth of sharing. It is not a book you skim or read haphazardly. Do yourself a favor and make a cup of tea, curl up in your favorite chair and immerse yourself in the journey. This story is better than any romance novel I've ever read. It touched my heart and my soul. Thank you, Ten White Bears and Medicine Horse. Once again you have reminded me that the Great Spirit provides our relationships only so that those involved can increase their knowledge of their relatedness to all things and their awareness of the Mystery. The only relationship that lasts forever is the one we have with the Great Spriit. This is the road of life.

The Maya Vase Book

If you have any interest in Maya art these books are a must
There are 6 books in this series now. They have all been published to make use by students and academics easy. Each book is full of around 100-200 decorated ancient maya vases. Justin Kerr developed the 'roll out' method of photography to show these vases in their full glory.

In the first book each photo is black and white, but each pages shows a good quality photo of the vase in full, with the design easy to see. All these books are bound in ring binders to make them easier to use on a photocopier and are A4 paper in size. The later issues of this series also include some colour roll-out photos. The easiest place to obtain these books is from the author. There are also a number of essays at the back of each of these books on subjects related to the vases by eminent Maya scholars.

If you are doing any research into the maya these books are invaluable.

Literally changed my life!
I was given this book in the fourth grade by my mother. As it was written for adults, I couldn't quite handle it yet, and didn't read it thoroughly until the sixth grade. It sparked my interest in intelligence, education, and particularly gifted education, which I still carry with me. I am now a student at MIT and hope to soon be doing research on the effect gifted education has had on college students' lives. Everyone who has any reason to be interested in gifted education or education of girls should read this book!

"detailed and colourful accounting"
"On the subject of books, permit me to suggest a newly-released title that will make great reading for you or for those Canadian history buffs on your gift list.

"Inside Camp X' , by Lynn-Philip Hodgson, recounts the fascinating story behind the top-secret training school for spies established in 1941 by William (A Man Called Intrepid" Stephenson, smack on the border between the then rural communities of Whitby and Oshawa.

Until now, only a small cairn and plaque have reminded us of the important role played by Camp X and its "students" in the successful outcome of the war.

Now, thanks to Hodgson's detailed and colourful accounting, the story can be better understood and appreciated."

This book has WONDERFUL pictures of Millie inside and outside of the White House. It is wonderful to see pictures of President Bush laying on the grass with puppies climbing all over him. It reminds us that Presidents are human too.

Great Book
This is a great book featuring the late Millie Bush.

Former President George Bush Sr.'s Springer Spaniel

It shows Millie with various politicians and famous people.

Honest and Courageous Dog
I'm Millie's son, Ranger. I think that "Millie's Book" is truthful, and beautifully written. My mother had incredible courage to write this book and I'm very proud of her.
