Very helpful!!
I am learning Spanish and this book helps me a lot when I want to learn, speak, write, or translate anything from English to Spanish or Spanish to English. This is perfect for anyone who wants to learn Spanish no matter what level you are at. I have learned so much from this book. There is one verb on each page with all the verb conjugations for all tenses and all persons (I, you, he, she, it, we, they, etc.). It is very clear. At the bottom of the page, there is a small collumn that has words and expressions related to the verb you are looking at. In the back, it has a small dictionary to look up the verb in English so you can find it in the book. Then, it has a small section for verbs that are not included in the book; it gives you the page number to a verb that conjugations the same way as the verb you are looking up, so even if the verb is not in the book, it gives an example of how to conjugate it. It also has a small section of alphebatically ordered tenses of irregular verbs and it gives you the page number of the verb that it comes from. Some verbs you can not immediatley tell what the infinnitive is, so this helps a lot. At the beggining of the book there is an intro explaining each verb tense and how to use it and examples so, even if you have never been taught any type of Spanish verbs, this explains it to you.
Also, this a good size to carry with you. If you are learning Spanish, Get this!!!!! Wonderful!!

Extremely helpful for all Spanish learners
I strongly recommend this book to anyone learning how to speak and conjugate Spanish verbs. In the first pages of the book, it explains how to form the participles and the tenses of verbs. It also tells what the different tenses are used for and their English equivalent. In the middle, the 300 verbs are spelled out and how to conjugate them in all 14 tenses. The book is printed in 2 colors for easy reference. The only bad thing is that for some people (I didn't have this problem), the print may be too small. But this is due to its convienent pocket size. Overall, I highly recommend this book.

Very helpful
For anybody who has to do a large amount of composing in Spanish, this is the book for you. It comes in incredibly handy when I have to write five-page compositions for my Spanish class. I recommend this to anybody, no matter what level Spanish you are taking.

PICK THIS ONE !
I have had French class for 6 years now and I still have found this book very helpful because it covers all the important grammar and has a good vocabulary section that can be easily learned in a few weeks . I also recommend this book since it has 10 practice tests that are actually as hard as the the real test ( often practice tests are harder ). The CD is somewhat helpful as well, particularly for those who plan to do the listening test.

This one tops the list of SAT II French prep books.
Kudos to the author for the best book to prepare for the SAT II French test. Five stars for the only prep book with 10 practice tests, clear answers with detailed explanations, lots of grammar review, and a listening comprehension disc. Merci beaucoup!

A Great Book For a French Student.
My French teacher had this book on her desk one day and I looked through it. We weren't using it as a textbook, nor were we learning very much French, but my teacher said that she would grade the work that I did in The Easy Way. I have been using this book for a few weeks and I have improved a lot. It has great dialogues with vocabulary translations at the bottom of the page, and great grammer explanations and practice. You'll be amazed at how fast you learn. I now know the most French in the class. I recommend, though, that you have somebody on hand who speaks French, just in case you get confused. Most likely, however, you won't be. It's in a very simple format and the explanations are easy to follow. I highly recommend French The Easy Way.

Thorough and clear with many exercises, all with answers
This is a great book for filling in the grammar details while you do one of the tape-based oral courses that teach grammar only by example. The lessons are well formatted, each beginning with a dialog, then moving on to grammar points and lots of exercises, all with answers. The dialogs show enough sense of humor to keep boredom at bay, and the grammar explanations are simple and clear.

Very good and helpful
"Write it in Spanish" was very helpful to me in learning to write Spanish. The method may not be a favorite of most people, as it does require a good amount of repetition, however it is not boring, and I myself enjoyed it. Since starting this book I have learned many new phrases and become much more confident in writing and putting together my own sentences. This book covers needed phrases for good, basic conversation, however it does nothing for pronunciation and it may be difficult for someone with little or no knowledge of Spanish to gain much from this book. "Write it in Spanish" would be best for a person who already knows the basics of Spanish and wishes to enforce that knowledge and learn more. I hope you enjoy learning from this book, I know I did.

Overrated and Inefficient
I am on a crash course to learn spanish and have acquired many books and resources, ... my local library. This book was so highly touted by other ... reviewers that I bought it. I am not that impressed. Precisely half the book is totally redundant, because all compound tenses are presented in their entirety, but the forms of hacer they are formed with never change. Second, there is no indcation when the form is irregular. Does the author expect you to memorize all the verb forms? The idea is to learn patterns and exceptions. The Langerscheidt dictionary's verb conjugation tables, at the back of the book, in contrast are a model of efficiency. First, a model for all regular verbs is provided, then models for different families, e.g. -car verbs. Finally, all irregualar forms are shown in bold, so you can zero in on the exceptions and try to commit them to memory. The patterns are labelled, e.g. <1a> for regular -ar verbs, etc. Then *every* verb in the dictionary is referenced to a specific pattern, e.g. hablar <1a>. In defense of the book, there are 20 pages of notes on when to use which tenses which are moderately helpful. But the book "Breaking Out of Beginner's Spanish" is probably more useful because it tells what tenses you can safely ignore.

Know your verbs, eat your verduras...
For english speakers who have never studied a romance language, verb conjugation almost seems like more trouble than it's worth. Irregular verbs abound and just when you think you know the patterns, some new irregularity comes up and smacks you right in the language faculty.

Unfortunately, verb conjugation is a necessary and monotonous part of learning Spanish. Without the ability to conjugate at will and without much thinking, fluency remains a Quixotic dream.

"501 Spanish Verbs" will get you up and running on some of the essential verbs of the Spanish language. When you're starting there's no way you're going to remember or not confuse the present subjunctive spelling with the spelling of the conditional or preterite. It's going to happen, and having this book on hand for moments like that will deaden the "what's the point of this!?!?" feeling. Eventually it comes together, and at some point this book will outlive its usefulness.

It's important to remember that this is not meant to be a comprehesive guide to Spanish verbs. That's why it's called "501 Spanish verbs" when there's obviously thousands more. 501 is a pretty good number of verbs to have on hand at the beginning of learning Spanish. It will get a reader through most children's books or basic reading. This book is to be mastered and built upon, not to be seen or used as a final resting place for learning about Spanish verbs. It should be used with the idea that someday it will be abandoned. If a learner of Spanish gets to that point then the book has done its job.

Spanish Verb Conjugation Made Easy
Whether a student or traveler, "501 Spanish Verbs" will make it easier for you to conjugate the many verbs associated with this Romance language. Just like many Romance languages, there are many tenses to memorize, however with the alphabetical, easy-to-use style author Christopher Kendris has used, conjugating Spanish verbs is as easy as 1-2-3.

Similar to "501 Portuguese Verbs," the book also contains short phrases commonly used in Spanish-speaking countries such as Spain and Mexico. The reader needs to be aware of the differences between Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish. Latin American usage eliminates the "vosotros" tense, and dialects among the many Spanish-speaking nations can often have words that mean one thing in one country, and something else in another. Keep an eye out for regional dialects (e.g., Castilian, Mexican, Antillean/Caribbean, Central American, etc..).

Overall, a must have for those wanting to brush up on their language skills. It's a great reference book to have in your collection.

A good survival tool :)
Are you trying to learn french?. If so, this is one of the books you must have. Why? Simply because it makes your life easier.

This book doesn't explain why verbs are conjugated in a certain way, but it helps you to learn merely by showing how 501 french verbs are conjugated. Is that enough? Well, by itself no, because we are not parrots who must repeat whatever they are told without understanding what they say (that, despite the opinion of some, not all, french teachers). However, if you have a good textbook, a terrific dictionary, some listening tapes and "501 French Verbs: Fully Conjugated in All the Tenses in a New Easy-To-Learn Format Alphabetically Arranged" (long title :)!!), you'll probably end up speaking french more or less well.

This edition is bilingual (french-english), so if you don't know the meaning of some verbs in french you'll still have the translation in english. Another thing worth pointing out is that each verb has lots of examples (with different tenses). I found out that to be particularly useful...

So, what to do?. If you can, buy this book, or ask a friend to lend it to you. It is not overly entertaining (as a matter of fact it is quite boring), but it helps you to deal with some of those awful verbs that sometimes make you wish for the nonexistence of the french language. On the whole, a good survival tool :)

Ce Livre Est Essentiel!!!
This book is absolutely essential for anyone studying French. I can't tell you how many quizzes on French verbs I've aced because of this book. It's true that many French textbooks contain some verb conjugations, but not nearly as many as this book does, and not in the easy to find style this book uses. It isn't only the verb tenses that make this book a must have. Kendris throws in tons of other useful things, such as avoir and faire verb phrases and tons of subjunctive phrases. One of the most helpful sections contains highly detailed descriptions of the various tenses, with numerous examples to clarify the tense. Most of us can differentiate between present and past tenses, but what about pluperfect and subjunctive? This book takes you by the hand and explains what many books (and instructors) take for granted.

The book is a treasure trove of information on a difficult language. I still feel that to truly speak French one must live in France for some time to be totally immersed, but for classroom study this book will help greatly. Anyone who has studied languages knows the emphasis placed on conjugation. Don't be left out in the dark!

Absolutely Essential
If you could only buy one French reference book, buy a good French dictionary. If you could buy two, buy this 501 French Verbs. It is a well-known theory among linguists that verbs are the backbone of any language. If you don't know a noun, fine...look it up. Verbs, however, change forms easily. They're unpredictable, hard to understand, difficult to construct. Did you forget if "sortir" conjugates like "dormir" or like "finir"? What about the the subjunctive of "faire"? There is only one solution for navigating through this jungle of verbs...501 French Verbs!

In this easy-to-understand, easy-to-use book, all your verb questions are instantly answered. In addition to fully conjugating every verb in every tense and mood, there are idioms with each verb (such as "faire des achats" under "faire"). There are quizzes in the back, as well as useful verbs and sentences for many different situations (such as "at the grocery store", or "at the hotel").

If you consider yourself a student of French at all, whether a seasoned expert (such as myself, who still uses this book every day) or just learning "etre", this book is one to keep on your shelf.

In-depth Review and Practice
I used this book to review for the SAT II during a study period at school. The grammar review is 60 solid pages, and so it takes some time to get through it and learn it, even if you are a good Spanish student. I studied this book for months before taking the test. Be warned that this book will not help you get a great score unless you put a lot of time in studying it (or you already know the material). However, it really does have everything you need to score well.

I think the practice tests were slightly harder than the real thing, but they were fairly close. Just a week before the actual test I got a 670 on a practice test. Then, on the actual test, I got a 710. This really isn't much of a difference when you take into account the range of SAT II scores that accompany any score.
Rather than including an exact scoring guide after every practice test (which would have been nice, but unrealistic), the book has directions on calculating your raw score and then one chart which gives a range of scores to match the range your raw score fell into. (The only soure of SAT IIs that have actually been given in previous years is, of course, "Real SAT IIs," published by the College Board.)

There were some typos in the book. I found a few in the grammar review and one or two in practice test answer keys. None of them were terrible, but if you think that the book is incorrect about something it may very well be. Overall, I good book to study, especially if you have a lot of time before the test.

Nice Explanations but Unrealistic Practice Tests
This book provides a well-rounded review of grammar and reading comp for the SAT II Spanish Test. I was kind of annoyed b/c the book advertises 10 full tests but they are all tests made up by the author, so they don't accurately predict how you will do on the test. The book does prepare you well for the test though.

This book is awesome!!!!!
I took the test in November 2001 and bought this book a week before it and the test was way easier than the practice tests seemed to show, and when i finally received my scores, i was amazed, i got an 800 a perfect score, seriously all the books on the Barrons publishins company do help a lot, the same i can say for the Writing test.

SMALL ENOUGH TO CARRY IN YOUR BAG
THIS LITTLE ORANGE BOOK (EL LIBRO ANARANJADO )IS VERY GOOD TO HAVE FOR EMERGENCIES. IF YOU FORGET THE VERB TENSE YOU NEED, JUST WHIP IT OUT OF YOUR BAG AND LOOK IT UP. ALPHABETICAL LISTINGS.

Disappointed out of print
Having studied 6 languages, I've used hundreds of different language books. This book has been ONE OF THE THREE MOST USEFUL books I've ever used for studying any language. And its compact size makes it so much more practical than the 501 version.

I hope the publisher comes to its senses, reprints and does the ample marketing this book deserves. If I were teaching Spanish, this would be a must-have for my students.

All the help you need and can fit in your shirt pocket!!
I am disapointed to see that this little book is out of print...I've been having a problem with my highschool students always "forgetting" their bulky 501 Spanish Verbs...perhaps if they could get a hold of this one that problem would be solved.
