Simple Devotion
As I read this book, I thought, "This man had a lifetime of learning to live, think, breath and walk in the presence of God." However, at the end of the book, in the biographical section, I learned that Kelly really only began to live the life he describes the last few years of his life. It was not that it took him that long to achieve such spiritual levels, but rather, he apparently was busy with life and never tried.

I found this encouraging--that a life filled with God's presence does not have to take decades to find. Rather, it can begin to be experienced little by little day to day and in a relatively brief time, moment by moment as Kelly describes.

This is a great book. Kelly is not pretentious in any way. He plainly and simply gives clues of how to live a Christ-filled life in today's busy society.

A Thing of Beauty
Call it a "classic" if you like, but to me, this book is a thing of beauty. There are few books that compare to it.

I once gave it as a graduation gift to a seminary student. She later commented that there were lots of things she agreed with. What?! There is no agrument or proposition here! You let it take you, lead you places. You immerse, wrap yourself in its beauty.

The 1941 edition with an intro/bio by Douglas Steere (also reprinted in 70s or 80s) is MUCH MUCH preferred to the Richard Foster edition. He not only adds his own intro, but does editing of the original. Blasphemy. Skip his "version" and find an original.

Perfect for a quiet time of reflection.
Thomas Kelly helps awaken our longing for a life lived in God's presence. He beckons us away from the distractions and sensual bombarments of popular culture, and points us a simple place of abiding faith.

Following Gods guidance, wherever He may lead...
This book provides you an opportunity to know about the lives of Chuck & Donna Thomas and their wonderful work at Project Partner.

Chuck & Donna went through a lot, took tremendous risks (personally and financially), and accomplished so much in furthering Gods Kingdom. This book is a great document of the eternal legacy of their work following God's leading by stepping out of the cookie-cutter approach to missions we have traditionally known.

Moreover, this is a testament to the extraordinary things that God can do through ordinary people who will listen and follow His guidance, wherever He may lead... even over "mountains".

Climb Another Mountain
Because of Donna Thomas, I've stooped in the hot afternoon sun of India to give a cup of cool water and a ladle of steaming rice to lepers in India. I've seen the orphan children who were left to die in the streets now learning to read and write in the classrooms of the children's homes. I've walked with barefoot pastors into those remote villages and watched the light shine in the eyes of the people as they heard, for the very first time in their lives, about a God who loves them and can help them with their problems.

This book is a collection of stories by a woman who was once a stay-at-home mom in Kansas until that Christmas when she and her husband and her three boys crossed the Rio Grande into Mexico to visit a missionary. The stories trace the founding of a prototype organization that has changed the face of missions around the world.

Climb Another Mountain will take you to India too, and Cuba, and China, and Nicaragua, and Guatemala as you relive with the author some of the most amazing experiences in short-term missions you will ever hear. But mostly, and more importantly, it will take you to the foot of the "mountain" your feet are intended to climb. It will challenge you and direct you to step outside of your world into a world of adventure with God.

Excellent reference guide
I found this book to be very entertaining, as well as an enlightened take on Thomas E. Kelly's "new brand" of existentialism. It made the philosophy interesting and accessible. I highly recommend it.

I was awed by the powerful insight of the human mind
This collection of quotes about a huge variety of subjects includes such provacative, insightful, and delicious musings that to re-read it every couple months is an explosive experience.

I happily recomend it to anyone. If you've ever taken a Landmark Forum you'll find much of the same worldview tucked into compact thoughts a 1,000 years old.

Of Atomic Veterans and a Shattered Trust
I first read "Countdown Zero" as an undergraduate political science major. Many years later, the book still haunts me. While the prose is easy to read, the subject matter and human context is evocative, unnerving, and disheartening. When you enlist into the military, you agree to relinquish some of your personal rights and freedoms in order to serve and protect your country. Implicit in this "contract" is the belief that the gov't would never deliberately and needlessly place you in harm's way without proper training and equipment. "Countdown Zero" exposes how the US Gov't completely voided this contract during the Cold War. This is a well-documented account of how two individual soldiers were repeatedly and callously exposed to the lethal effects of atomic testing. These two soldiers (who were amoung tens of thousands of "Atomic Veterans") were physical witnesses to nuclear and thermonuclear weapons testing. Their vivid memories of seeing the blasts, feeling the seering heat and shock-waves, and even tasting the ionized air while marching towards ground zero or standing on the beach of a nearby atoll will raise the hairs on the back of your neck. The story of their quest for justice after the needless exposures will raise your blood pressure. This book will cause even the most ardent supporter of the American military and US Government to refrain from blindly believing everything he/she is told. The text does not question the necessity of nuclear weaponry, but it does question the methodology in which the weapons were tested, the exposure of US troops to the explosions, and the shameless tactics which the US Gov't used to try to cover-up the events and avoid responcibilities for its actions. Saffer and Kelly have created a harrowing account of shamefull Cold War secrets and a chilling cautionary tale of blindly trusting any government entity in the future.

The Authority on Emmett Kelly Jr.
I have this book and it is fascinating. More than just a book on Emmett, this is also a book on the history of the United States from the eyes of the world's most loved hobo. I even got mine signed by Emmett at the Gift Garden in Cleveland. You can see if they can get you a signed one by calling 1-800-777-4802

I saw it at a glance
I was in Kathmandu in Novemver of 1998, staying at the Hotle Vajra and had the opportunity to meet Thomas Kelly. He gave a signed copy of this book to the host of our trip and I got to flip through it. What a fabulous book! I wasn't aware that The Hidden Himalayas and Kathmandu City on the Edge of the World were out of print until I returned to the states. I've tried to located it everywhere and I'm not having any luck. Can you help me get a copy of these books?

A no-nonsense, easy to read eference
I really enjoyed this book. Contrary to many other "manuals", this one has nothing that's unneeded or unimportant - no watery phrases, no stupid stories - just up to the point, precise information on subjects such as sources of the mortgage money, reading the fine print, ARMs, FHA and VA loans. It even includes Ammortization and Loan Progress Tables..And it's very easy to read and understand!

Robin Hood and Other Outlaw Tales (Middle English Texts)

Amazon base price: $35.00

Welcome to Sherwood! (and Barnsdale)
Do you know need a reason to buy this book? I can give you an excellent one -- it's called the Table of Contents. It lists 700 pages worth of Robin Hood ballads, plays and more. It has the earliest ballads and plays where Robin is merely a yeoman, the first play that casts him as the Earl of Huntington, and later ballads that give the "origins" of Little John, Maid Marian and Will Scarlet. Also, there's an introductory article on the history of the legend and complete introductions and notes to all the ballads and plays. The notes and introductions are by Stephen Knight and Thomas Ohlgren, two top Robin Hood scholars. If you want to read the original tales of the outlaw, or if you are teach a course in Robin Hood, this book is an excellent buy. Just treat it with care. I notice my cover is fraying somewhat.
