A New Genre
In recent years, photography books, whether travel or cultural, have become so designed, edited and digitally retouched that the images actually place you further from reality. You don't trust what is shown; you sense that you will never see what's on the page. Kevin Kelly has produced a very different book. The photographs could appear in any magazine in the world from National Geographic to Der Spiegel, but the book wasn't put together by an art director. There is no story, no copywriter. There are no white spaces. Every image bleeds to the margins. It is dense and rich like its subjects. The photographs pull you into a part of the world that is misunderstood, maligned and distorted every day in our press. The person behind the lens loved the places and people he encountered. From Afghanistan to Japan we journey.

Rarely do text and images work together. Asia Grace releases the images to the imagination. There are no words, no captions, no explanations. It works. It is all photographs, cover to cover. Some of the images are stunning, some are idyllic, some are inexplicable. Without sentiment, Asia Grace places you into a world that we don't understand, don't want to leave, and will never see the same again.

Asia Grace is Amazing
Asia Grace is art in book form. Amazing images of Asian culture, lands, and people. A treasured gift, an intriguing waiting room addition, an artful display piece to enrich your home.

ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT
As an avid traveller, this book sourced out the best kept secrets all over Europe. I was amazed at the services contained in the book - even down to a chandelier repairer! The restaurants are the most ecletic mix and I can't wait to visit and sample for myself. Visually very beautiful and what a wonderful spread on the people section. Well done!

Stunning guide
I could not put it down, the most beautiful book I have every bought

A beautiful book that is ...
...INSANELY priced. I have never understood why some publishers seem almost to **want** to alienate the very people who would love to purchase one of their offerings by pricing the book at ludicrously high levels. This is one book that will, for me and many. many medical professionals (the intended audience of the text, incidently), forever remain a beauty to be watched from afar... never to be held closely.

Pity.

In search of Ned : a travelogue of Kelly country

Average review score:

In Serach of Ned-A travelogue of Kelly Country.
Of the many books on Ned Kelly available, this one has to be one of the best.Although it was published in 1988,most of the directions given to historical sites are still relevant.Photographs are of average quality but info.provided is invaluable to a Kelly enthusiast. The writing is clear and concise and obviously geared toward people already familiar to the story.Passey covers all regions of "Kelly Country"well and the chapter on pubs is a nice interlude. As this book was a small edition size of 1000,copies are scarce.Grab it if you can!

Decade Ahead of His Time--Absolutely Brilliant
Kevin, a WIRED Magazine editor who spoke, with Stewart Brand, at OSS '94, has produced what I regard as one of the top five books of this decade. A very tough read but worth the effort. I had not understood the entire theory of co-evolution developed by Stewart Brand and represented in the Co-Evolution Quarterly and The Whole Earth until I read this book. Kevin introduces the concept of the "hive mind", addresses how biological systems handle complexity, moves over into industrial ecology and network economics, and concludes with many inspiring reflections on the convergence of biological and technical systems. He was easily a decade if not two ahead of his time.

Problem Seeking: An Architectural Programming Primer
Published in Paperback by Amer Inst of Architects (1987)
Authors: William Pena, Steven Parshall, and Kevin Kelly
Amazon base price: $21.95
Used price: $15.99
Average review score:

The "Bible" of Architectural Programming
If you're interested in architectural programming--defining a project's requirements prior to designing--then this book is a "must read." Why "Problem Seeking?" Pena explains that since design is problem solving, programming is, "the search for sufficient information to clarify, to understand, to state the problem."
Part One of the book is a primer, focusing on theory and principles. Part Two is the "how to do it" section, providing details and examples. The book is based on decades of real-life project examples from one of the most experienced architectural programming teams in the nation.

The core idea is profound: Separating programming (analysis) from design (synthesis), brings tremendous clarity to the design problem. Focusing first on the goals, facts and concepts, then translating those into quantifiable needs (independent of the solution!) facilitates decision-making and encourages innovation.

Reading this book won't make you an architectural programmer, but it provides an essential foundation for anyone involved in a building project--architects and owners alike. The book is used as a text book in architecture schools across the country, and is required reading before taking the Architectural Registration Exam. A 9 out of 10 only because it will leave you yearning for more.
