Irish humor
If you are Irish this book is for you! The wit is from the "old country." Many of the jokes are old but timeless. They belie the culture of the not so distant past. The Irish find humor in almost every situation, and this book demonstrates this very well. The wisdom is ageless and is exactly what has gotten the Irish through their bad times. If you want to know why the Irish can get through their hard times read this book. Joan Larson Kelly understands and has chosen the best of the Irish Wit and Wisdom. She knows Pat and Mike inside out. For insight into the Irish Wit and Wisdom read this wonderful book.

Combinational interpretation is good, but the rest is not
I have bought numerous tarot books over the years. This one seemed to be one of the wrong decision.

For the explanation of Cards combo, i think it is pretty cool, but not very thorough. Sometimes, the groupings of the combo cards are not very organized.

For anyone who is a beginner for tarot or just begun to read reverse and combo cards, it is a relatively good reference. however, i got sick of reading it a few times later. This books doesn't give deeper insight into the combinations and does not offered not too many options.

I would advise looking for other books or try to learn combinations on your own, as individuals may vary in how they read their spread. For these reasons, i would give this a pass.

So so, but worth the read
First off, I'm really glad that this book is in my collection, and this is not a book I'd recommend to a beginner. This book covers good ground, but does not waste time hashing over the basics. I'd recommend having a solid comfort level with interpretations of single cards before starting in on this book.

Starting with the negative side, I didn't agree with many of the card interpretations. They were generally simplistic, however it may be that the author intended it that way in order to better illustrate the concepts that she was trying to convey. Many of the combinations are also simplistic due perhaps to the same principle. The author's approach is to assign a shortlist of keywords to each card, then read them like flashcards. If 4 Staffs is "Peaceful" and 6 Cups is "Often", the two cards together mean "Peaceful Often". Although my own experience is admittedly limited, I do not personally know of anyone that reads so literally.

On the positive side, the author's oversimplification freed me up to not overcomplicate relationships between the cards. While I do feel that the specific examples are oversimplistic, I also think that was useful to break down my fear of allowing it to just be simple. I haven't found that I've directly used the lessons from this book, but it has definately had an influence on the way I link cards together.

One wonderful thing about this book is that the focus on combinations means that it can print repetitive combinations for certain sets. Such as (example is from my head, not book): Ace Wands/Two Wands, Ace Wands/Three Wands, Ace Wands/Four Wands, etc. It clearly can't cover every combination that exists, but it covers enough to allow you to exrapolate your own beyond a certain point. It also makes for easy light reading -- would be easy to read a few pages here and there when you have the time.
I feel that this book is generally most useful for those who have a good feel for what the cards mean on their own, but aren't as comfortable reading them together or in spreads.

A good second book on tarot
This is not a beginner's first book, but rather second book.

Most books I know give more or less detailed description of each card, a couple of spreads, and maybe a few examples.

For a tarot beginner who does not yet have a lot of experience, a book of that type does not give enough examples of how to interpret a few cards together.

And that's where this book fits in - it gives a lot of tarot cards combinations (with both straight and reversed cards) and their meanings.

A previous reviewer wrote that only keyword meanings of cards are given and that the way the combinations meanings are not explained.

The first issue is, in my humble opinion, a minor issue *if* the book is not used as one's first tarot book.

The second is, in my opinion, a good challenge for the reader - figuring out the way the meaning was reached makes for a better studying.

Look Elsewhere
While some of the information in this book might be useful if you are in danger of marching off to divorce court, but would prefer not too, most is just rehashed and outdated information borrowed from other sources. Not much original here, especially if you've read other books on "Good Divorce." Stick to more to experienced writers such as Kirshenbaum and Wallerstein if you are looking for information on as important a topic as this.

A real gem
This books makes clear that the kind of divorce you end up with is a mater of your intent. It then guides you step by practical step to enable you that execute that intent to end your marriage with dignity and preserve a semblence of a civilized relationship for your future dealings. Beyond divorce it is a teriffic guide for how to negotiate with and talk to your partner or spouse in a most productive way to get what you need or want. It's a real gem.

A must-read for ANYONE even THINKING about divorce.
This book's no nonsense approach to divorce is honest and filled with common sense. Even though divorces are usually so emotionally charged, this book made it possible for us to see through the anger and hurt, asks the questions you won't ask yourself, and hopefully if answered honestly, you can help work through the items that could turn into big issues later. READ this book. I can't sing its praises enough. If you want to get through your divorce and get on with your life, use this guide.

Revealing
I loved this book. I felt that I got ten and more biographies of the most famous actresses in the world. It's well researched, and it's fun to read. The author emphasizes the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. I've read all of Jane Ellen's books and enjoy her style. The Golden Girls of MGM is one of her best.

For Movie Fans
I am an avid fan of old films so I was delighted to find The Golden Girls of MGM in my book store. Though I knew a lot about MGM, I discovered a great deal more in Wayne's thick and delicious book. These beautfiful and talented actresses are a great study. Wayne dishes the dirt, but she sticks to the basics as well. The book is written in a breathless style. I will read it again and agin over the years so that I can relive those Golden years that were magical, but not forgotten, thanks to this book,

Great Book!
I enjoyed Golden Girls of MGM very, very much. I consider it a Hollywood reference book. Although Jane Ellen Wayne has a humorous writing style at times, she gets her facts straight and documents the iives of Hollywood legends accurately. So much has been written about Lana Turner, Greta Garbo. Liz Taylor, etc., but Wayne comes up with facts that weren't previously known. For those who are not acquainted with the Golden Era, this book is an excellent chance to read about it. There's much to learn about MGM and the great LOuis B. Mayer and the star system. It's a very good read. I recommend it highly.

A Promise Unfulfilled
This is an exceptionally well-produced book, with glossy pages, excellent maps of the routes Joan traveled and the geography of her campaigns, as well as a number of photographs of historic landmarks related to the life of La Pucelle. If it were a bit larger in size, it would even make a good coffee table book. Mr. DeVries has apparently done a sizable amount of research on his subject and has included excellent endnotes and references. Anyone wishing to follow-up with his or her own study of Joan of Arc would do well to use this work as a starting point. Unfortunately, though, it ultimately fails to deliver on its promise of being a study of her capabilities as a tactician and a strategist.

Having read many of the documents contemporary with Joan's time, as well as numerous biographies (Pernoud, Sakesville-West, et. al.) I was quite familiar with her career. Also, having recently read J.F.C. Fuller's excellent account of the battles of Alexander the Great (The Generalship of Alexander the Great, De Capo Press), I had expected a treatise along similar lines. I was hoping for such things, perhaps, as a review of common fifteenth century tactics, an analysis of how Joan's tactics might have differed from these, information concerning the order of battle for both the French and English during each confrontation, an analysis of how troops were deployed, and so on. Instead, what was presented consisted of basically the same information already presented by Joan's other biographers. Maybe I was expecting too much. For one thing, it may be that medieval warfare was less tactically sophisticated than warfare during more ancient times, despite the advent of gunpowder weapons. For another, it may well be that reliable, detailed documentation of Joan's battles simply does not exist.

The learned clerics at Poitiers asked Joan what need she had of soldiers if God had foreordained the outcome, and she replied, "The soldiers will fight and God will give the victory." Given this supernatural viewpoint, considerations of strategy and tactics become relatively unimportant, little more than a context for a foregone conclusion. Any maybe that's all we really need to know about Joan's military actions.
