Warning Signs
This is a book that anyone can read and feel a sense of understanding about. Mr. Kelly hits the nail on the head w/ regards to self esteem and its relationship to the addictive process. I also like how he gives examples throughout the book as identifiers.

As a therapist in the addictions/eap field I have suggested this book on more that one occasion to individuals coming in to discuss the concerns for their children. It speaks to the lay person in common sense language and guides them on a path that can be difficult but will pay benefits in healthier family relations and children who will have improved skills to navigate the many obstacles to becoming productive individuals.

Warning Signs
John Kelly makes key points when he reminds his readers that adolescents have not fully matured emotionally. Parents need to help their children through their emotional growth. Parents are helping their children when they keep a close watch on them and also when they provide behavioral boundaries such as strict curfews, appropriate activities and guidance in selecting friends.

The book is well written, with many case studies. It is a quick but important read.

Reading the Warning Signs
Warning Signs by John Kelly and Brian J. Karem is a must- read for parents in this demanding and fast paced world where nurture and love are essential for developing a healthy value system for childhood development.

Easy to read and chocked full of common sense based on years of counseling troubled children and their parents, Kelly gives practical advice and sets priorities where they should be. Those of us who have children intrinsically know we should spend time with them and that building self esteem pays untold dividends in the future. Our actions as well as our words convey messages that our children pick up on and listening to what they say is vital.

When something cataclysmic happens most of us turn to see if our loved ones are unharmed. As parents time invested with our children ought to be our first priority rather than the more superficial goals we chase each day. Thanks, John for the advice.

Indispensable Analytical Resource
As a health care analyst, I do lots of research using Excel. I stumbled across this text at a discount book sale and have used it constantly since then as a resource. A large portion of the book deals with pivot tables, one of the truly powerful Excel functions. But it covers much more than just this. Several of my MBA friends have browsed through the book and lamented they did not have this resource when they were in B-school. It's unfortunate that it is out of print.

What a SHAME!
It's too bad that this book is out of print - it is one of the best I have in my library, as it gives both beginners and experienced "Excellers" the insights they need to make use of the Data functions Excel offers. I hope the publisher sees this and offers this fantastic book to the market again. As the lines between spreadsheets and databases continues to blur, this book gets more important....

Amazing resource for Excel power users
I waited 3 months for this book (which was out of print) and it has been well worth the wait. This book provides all the bells and whistles plus a whole bunch of other advanced functions which you wouldn't have thought of in dealing with data lists in Excel. Admitted, managing data with Excel isn't recommended in a lot of circumstances, but sometimes you have no choice. You might have too few data for using a full-fledged database; or, more likely, people tend to avoid using database programs for managing their data, with the result that you often get raw data entered with Excel - and you have to return a certain output to the original source in Excel format. My work involved quite a lot of this, and this book has offered wonderful solutions for almost all of my work needs. If you think you know a thing or two about using Excel, especially in data management, this book will make you think again - and help you become more productive than ever.

Great Book for Scorsese Fans & Students
Examines Director Martin Scorsese's career from the beginning to Cape Fear (although it seems that the book had to go to press before Cape Fear was actually released, as there's a discernable lack of substance in that chapter).

To gather wonderful tales of how Scorsese works, Kelly interviews the director's friends, family members, casts, and crews. Oh, and the Secretary to the President of Cyprus!! (See details about The Last Temptation of Christ). Quoted stories, observations, and comments all contribute to a fine portrait of one of our greatest active cinema artists. (And, to the delight of film buffs everywhere, text shows that Scorsese is first and foremost an unabashed movie fan)! Kelly's system provides the reader to form own opinions about Scorsese, rather than making a lot of critical conclusions.

In pursuit of my undergrad degree, I used this book quite a bit for research toward essays I wrote about Scorsese's films. Not at all a chore to read, it was a very enjoyable book, great for the fan as well as the film scholar.

Good index, good filmography. Brief forewards by Michael Powell and Steven Spielberg hint at more than a bit of pure jealousy!

fantastic bio!
this is one of the best, in-depth bio's that I have read. And what a subject! Martin Scorsese is a god-like director that has made such films as Good Fellas Casino and Taxi Driver. The book is filled with interveiws from fellow directors and drew/cast etc. Great format! It's like reading a behind the scene's documentry.

BUy it!

What a book to get insight into a culture
This book while very much American in it's point of view is actually quite an informative background into the cultures of these SE Asian nations. The book takes you on a thinking tourists point of view while mixing interviews with personal points of view, you find yourself more informed as to what makes Americans different in their thinking to these other cultures as well as how we're very much driven by the same desires...though solving the quests for the objects of our desires quite differently. My wife and I visited these countries after reading this book and found the insights helpful in enjoying these cultures even more!

Obsolete Edition
This was a great Fourth edition when published back in 1999. NASA and the science of astronomy have learned much since then. When the new information is incorporated in a Fifth Edition, we will look forward to the new theories and data.

Warm science
Through its many iterations the editors have managed to tie substantiated facts with brand new discoveries quite seemlessly. The writing avoids the mistake of taking you on a "ride" through the solar system and instead focuses on facts and inferences. It bugs me when writers throw too much opinion your way trying to paint the night sky in your head. Instead, you get to do all that painting yourself.
The illustrations and tables are also very good. The tie together the body of text pretty well. I'm not any kind of engineer or photographer, so when the included visual aids bring the words to life like this, it makes the reading time valuable.
What I really wanted was an all-encompasing text reference of our home planetary family. What I got was all that and a little more. It's well worth the dollars of initial investment. If we want a greater understanding of who we are and where we come from, careful study of our observable neighborhood qualifies as a good investment of time.

An excellent source book
"The New Solar System" is an excellent source book for anyone that is interested in our solar system. The book is just absolutely gorgeous, and the pictures and illustrations help bring the information to life. Inside its covers, this book contains a good spread of information on just about every single major body in our system. Everyone who worked on this item did an excellent job; the layout is very well done making it easy to find whatever information you are looking for. If you just want to have one guide to the solar system, this is the book for you.

Very compelling stories
This tape is well done. The sound effects create an atmosphere that draws in the listener. The actors are dramatic, but not overly so. The short stories themselves are well written, delivering edge-of-the-chair suspense (or knee-slapping comedy, as the case may be).

It's finally here....and worth the wait!
As most net surfers are aware the Sci-Fi Channel's web site has included a section devoted to science fiction radio drama...Seeing Ear Theatre. One aspect of which includes originally produced productions cerated especially for the site and which has featured performances by many well-known SF actors as Micheal O'Hare,Mark Hamill,Marina Sirtis, and others. With a few exceptions, a lot of the dramas are based on recent short stories by SF writers such as Terry Bisson, Allen Steele, John Kessel and Gergory Benford. With the release of this audiobook editon(which includes introductions by SF's resident angry young{sic}man Harlan Ellison)now one can listen to these stories anytime you want. The best stories(IMO)are the Three Odd Comedies and The Death of Captain Future (which despite the pulpish-sounding title is a darkly humorous tale set in the future history of Steele's previous works such as Orbital Decay and Clarke County,Space). If you like audio drama-- especially newly produced audio drama...you'll love this collection and you may also want to check out Vol. 2 which should be on sale soon(I know I can't wait).

Into the Sun!
WOW what a story! Brian Smith could sell this as a short story by itself it is so good IMO. I just wish they sold a hard copy of these writings--not just audio! I have been reading Sci Fi for a long time. This guy is great! Reminds me of 2001, a space odyssey a bit. Worth the price just for this one folks! I noticed there are no other books by Brian Smith for sale on Amazon. What's up with that? He needs to write books, and Amazon needs to sell them--geez, do I make myself clear?

Comic Book Artist review
I found this book to be very poorly edited. There are a number of mistakes that make it somewhat annoying. I also found the choice of the artists in the book to be poor. This book might have been good back when it came out in 1993 but now in the year 2000 I find it to be dated.

great book that the artists havent seen before
I have shown this book to many artists for autographs and they are amazed because they havent seen this book before...it is great to update

This is a must for anyone interested in comic book art!
This excellent book covers all of the major players in the comic book art world. Kirby's introduction was one of his last written works, and is a must have for Kirby fans. Byrne's article about the art process is definitive. Ohlandt's article about the history of comic books is one of the best. Bravo!

Month of Meals: One Day to a Freezerful of Entrees

Very well organized, good for the beginning monthly cook.
This book is very well orgainzed, a good beginner's manual if you are new to once-a-month-cooking, she explains what can be frozen and what can't, for how long, etc, very well. I liked most of the recipes, but I would like to see more chicken and more ground beef recipes, since those are the less expensive cuts of meat and those of us on budgets use a lot.

Month of Meals is fabulous
Month of Meals is the best organized book of it's kind that I have ever seen. I wanted to do once a month cooking, but couldn't figure out how to get started until I read this book. Her instructions are clear and helpful, and she inserts lots of practical, encouraging tips. There is a good balance between adult and kid friendly recipes. I am extremely pleased with the extra time I have outside the kitchen!

Exceptional
I discovered this book at the library and had to have a copy of my own. The information and recipes are exceptional!
