Future Flashpoint or Future Allies
After reading Tajikistan: The Trials of Independence (see review), my perspective of this region was broadened immensely with Calming the Ferghana Valley. An in-depth study of Uzbekistan, Tajikistan (with particular focus on Northern Tajikistan) and Kyrgystan, the book acts as more of a petition, or call to action, to secure stability in these regions before the continued fragility, confusion, and disintegration of the political and social structure influences an irreversible course toward explosive upheaval.

The recent events in Afghanistan have demonstrated how far-reaching the effects of socio-political unrest can be. They have also demonstrated how strategically valuable these countries can be, being located in the middle of the tumultuous Asian continent. This book is a first attempt at staving off the violent actions and reactions that may or may not occur as a result of the unrest. But with the bombings in Osh, Kyrgystan; the kidnappings and "disappearances" in Tajikistan, and the secret unrest in Uzbekistan, it does not take much influence to convince one that the unrest may be more violent than diplomatic.
I'm just a guy from Minnesota, USA. I have never been to any of these places and probably never will go. Reading this book, however, gives me an apprecation for the struggles that these people encounter every day--both on an individual level and on the governmental level.
The land is a beautiful land, ranging from deserts to spectacular mountains. The people there have a desire to succeed and, with a little of our help, as proposed in this book, perhaps they will.
Read it--Learn a little about this world that you live upon!

THE Buffy book - even for Aussies like me!
Ok, where do I start?? The Watcher's Guide for BtVS is the most informative book on any show, let alone Buffy. With all the quotes you'll ever need and the little things that you might have missed - though if you're like me, you watch the eps over and over anyway!!

There are the helpful explanations on the quotes that involve movies or TV, and help you to see what everyone was laughing about - especially good for Aussies who sometimes dont have a clue about the American terms and stuff (like me!)

There are full colour pics, as well as black and white pictures. And if you missed a few eps, there is a full episode guide of seasons 1 and 2. From the eps you did miss, you might also have missed some vital info about a character - well, never fear! Detailed character info and backgrounds are also found in this book!!

I know this is an over-used phrase but it is sooo true in this case - If you buy ONE book this year and you're a Buffy fan, this is the book you should buy!! Save up if you have to, but do whatever you can to get a hold of it before The Watcher's Guide pt 2 (for seasons 3 and 4) comes out in November 2000!! Whether you're an Australian, an American, English, from New Zealand, or ZIMBABWE! It doesn't matter! Get your hands on this book!!

Watcher's Guide a must have for all Buffy fanatics
This is quite possibly the best of the books on the mythology of Buffy. Besides the usual cast photos (which are of a good glossy quality) it also boasts of an extensive episode guide to the show's first two seasons including exclusive interviews the entire cast and Joss Whedon. There's the Sunnydale Guidebook which is said to be an excerpt from the Sunnydale Official Board of Tourism and Commerce Brochure depicting all of the hot spots (both of them). I really enjoyed the Monster Guide which is almost 40 pages in length, has explanations on why the vampires on this show don't fly, and many other neat facts and photos. This monster guide may only be rivaled by the monster guide on the official Buffy site and in some respects is more thorough. It's a real bonus. I also enjoyed "Bloodlust" which is an entire chapter dedicated to all the relationships on the show in general, and the intoxicating and fascinating relationship between Angel and Buffy in particular. There's also the Slayer Handbook according to Buffy Summers, the Character Guide, behind the scenes with the regulars and also guest stars like John Ritter, a playlist featuring all the songs played on the show over its first two seasons, and dialogue cut from the original scripts. This is a first rate book and I highly endorse it.

THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
You want thorough! 298 pages all of Buffy. Featuring exclusive everything on Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), Nicholas Brendon (Xander), Alyson Hannigan (Willow), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia), David Boreanaz (Angel), Robia La Morte (Jenny), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce), John Ritter (Ted), James Marsters (Spike), Armin Shimmerman (Principal Snyder), Juliet Landua (Drusilla), Julie Benz (Darla), Elizabeth Anne Allen (Amy), Ara Celi (Ampata), and Bianca Lawson (Kendra). From exclusive pictures, interviews, trivia, episode guides, etc. This book covers the whole two seasons, including a special interview with Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt (along with the producers of Buffy). Also it has cast wardrobe and tons of stuff. You can pick it up and just go on and on. It's full of everything and anything you need to know about the show. Definitely a great buy.

Great Read
This was great for my nephew because he enjoyed the movie so much and he enjoys reading. He was able to understand the book quite well because he had seen the movie.

A very,very,very interesting book!

A great story, and very interesting to read! I have never watched the movie, but I want to watch it now. There is a set of pictures from the movie(I think) around the middle of the book and I thought it was quite interesting to look at them. If you like animal-whale stories, I'm sure you'd like this book. Even if you don't like animal-whale stories, I think you would like it anyway! My opinion is that this book was very interesting!
