THIS IS THE BOOK DOCTORS AND THEIR PATIENTS HAVE BEEN WAITIN
The Way To Eat is a superb book by nutritionist and preventive specialist Dr. David Katz. He explains in clear terms how we have gotten into the present epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease (our bodies are originally adapted for intensive physical activity in a setting of constant food scarcity), and why binging and weight gain are natural outcomes (in our new high-fat high-calorie low activity environment). Katz then dispenses with both guilt as well as fad diets, explaining how we can alter our eating habits to suit the modern environment. Simple and intelligent food choices (including how to read and really understand "Nutrition Facts" product labeling), healthful snacking, and providing children with healthful early eating habits serve as major points of emphasis in this outstanding guide. The Way To Eat is a major achievement in the nutrition field. I have already begun recommending it to patients and their families, and readers everywhere will be richly rewarded when they embrace Dr. Katz's insightful, enjoyable, and common sense advice.

Kudos from a nutritionally-oriented physician
As a clinician treating patients struggling to control their weight, I applaud Dr. Katz for his insightful, practical, and compassionate guide to lifelong fitness and healthy living. Gimmick-free, The Way to Eat tells it like it is, offering no quick fixes, but rather a long-term solution. I have and will shamelessly borrow much from Katz's insights in helping my patients.

An Excellent Read!
In "The Way to Eat", Dr. Katz takes a refreshingly honest approach to weight control. With so many conflicting theories about the best way to lose weight, I have found myself losing nothing but interest! This book clears up the confusion and provides a realistic, straightforward plan for achieving weight goals without compromising health (physical and emotional!). I recommend this book to anyone interested in giving up on too-good-to-be-true diets and getting real about what works. This book is showing me the way!

Best book on direct marketing!
Loved this book. I bought this book after seeing David Katz lecture... His writing style is just as good as seeing him in person! Informative, great examples, persuaded me to create even better direct mail...

This book earned money for me, WOW!
It was directly based upon an inspiration generated from this book, Design for Response, that I sold my latest design project. There are many great examples in this book that have kept me thinking of new projects.

useful book, filled with applications for all DM'ers
I liked this book for its gallery sections, over 200 photographs of great DM examples that spark new ideas and methods of execution. The chapters and discussions are well described and give many references and referals I found useful. I particularly liked the discussion of The new Census 2000 Form and the very clever Otis Elevator campaign based upon a Frank Lloyd Wright letter.

On The Mark
Walked into the B& N in the Marina and on the Valentine's table was this book. I read it in two sittings. If I had only known these things happen - years ago. Great eye opener and on the mark for Heart Day.

Delightful & touching love story!
This book is a delightful & touching love story between two seemingly different individuals. Offering a refreshing & humorous glimpse into their relationship, we find ourselves encouraged to strengthen & appreciate our own intimate relationship. I highly recommend it!!

Works For Me!
Great Lesson! After reading this book I appreciate, even more, how much work goes into a relationsihip. How important it is to communicate as much as possible. Their exercises that follow each chapter work!

Nutrition in Clinical Practice
A very thorough and thoughtful discussion of nutrition that is ideally suited to the needs of the primary care provider. The CLINICAL HIGHLIGHTS feature at the end of each chapter is especially useful, but the final section, PRINCIPLES OF DIETARY COUNSELING, is worth getting the book for all by itself. Knowing about healthful nutrition is the easy part - getting our patients to adopt healthful eating habits is what's difficult. This approach to the problem of behavioral change is the best I have seen.

Review by a nutritionally-oriented physician
Dr. Katz has done both the medical community and patients a great service by writing Nutrition in Clinical Practice. This book offers the layperson a surprisingly readable, painstakingly detailed overview of the role nutrition plays in health and disease. Anyone interested in knowing why good diet is so important should read this book.

For the physician or nutritionist, this book is an essential tool for incorporating the latest research into your nutritional interventions. For students, Dr. Katz's work will be a highlight of their curriculum.

Review by Author
Based on 15 years of clinical practice in Internal and Preventive Medicine, this text is specifically designed for the practicing clinician, yet is accessible to the educated lay reader. It is comprehensive, with topics ranging from obesity and cardiovascular disease, to aging, cognition, early development, and the menstrual cycle. Comprehensive, extensively referenced and carefully evidence-based, the book is concise and practical. This book should be of interest to any clinician wishing to address diet and health effectively in the course of clinical practice, as well as to any patient wanting authoritative information on nutritional health.

People Funny Boy:
A must read for anyone who thought that they know about Reggea, Rock Steady, Ska - Jamaican music in general. This book must be the ultimate documentary of music as well as the music scene in Jamaica during the 60's,70's, and 80's. It's not just a book about Scratch; it is a book about all Jamaican musicians, singers and procuders of the period. It's the best documented piece of Jamaican history. Someday it will become the most sought after Jamaican history book!

David Kratz ensures that the reader lives moment by moment with almost every musician, producers, and Jamaican artist of the period - some of whom have long been forgotten. He takes you into the studios, delves into the background of each and every artist mentioned in the book, takes to the UK and US with Scratch and Bob Marley, then brings you back to the Black Art Studio where Scratch produced some of the most revolutionary and influential Jamaican music.

Any Jamaican who reads this book will certainly say: "Me know da music deh, but me didn't know sey a Scratch do it." The reader will soon learn that Scratch is the greatest Jamaican music producer. No other producer will ever come close to matching his skill and artistry of Scratch in the studio. Nuff respect to Scratch. He is a true genious! And hat's off to David Katz. He certainly knows how to "ride de rythm". The book is a master piece!

Very, very Upsetting!
Scratch your Lee Perry itch. I am awed to have in my hands 536 pages of all things Upsetting. Buy this book, if a so a so.

Useful study tool for students of epidemiology
This is a useful study guide and reference tool for anyone who is starting in epidemiology. It gives a great overview on study designs, statistics, and a great deal of other useful information for creating, implementing and evaluating a study. I have found it extremely useful in both my studies and in the implementation of studies. I would recommend this book as a study tool in any epidemiology course!

Toe-tapping verses that beg to be sung aloud
I'm Still Here In The Bathtub by Alan Katz is a delightful collection of "silly-dilly" poems, which can be sung to the tunes of classic childhood favorites. Extravagant caricature artwork by David Catrow adds a special touch to the toe-tapping verses that beg to be sung aloud, in this pleasant and humorous picture book. My Sister Fights With Me: My sister fights with me/We always disagree/And it's her fault!/She breaks my favorite stuff/She treats me mean and rough/I say, "I've had enough!"/Our mom yells halt!/So we act like we're friends/But soon the niceness ends/She starts to hiss/Taking things from my drawers/Making me do her chores/And worst of all, she snores/Please take my sis!

Mirror Symmetry and Algebraic Geometry (Mathematical Surveys and Monographs, 68)
Published in Hardcover by American Mathematical Society (1999)
Authors: David A. Cox and Sheldon Katz
Amazon base price: $69.00
Average review score:

Excellent overview of mirror symmetry
This book is one of the few monographs on mirror symmetry that is not a collection of articles written by specialists. It attempts to put mirror symmetry on a mathematically rigorous foundation and does so to a large degree. The book opens with a review of the motivations for mirror symmetry in quantum field theory and superstring theory. The content of this chapter is straightforward reading for physicists/string theorists but mathematicians may have trouble with the physical reasoning employed. The chapter explains the motivation for the mathematical constructions performed in the rest of the book. The author does a good job of presenting the mathematics in a form that is as rigorous as possible. The predictions made by physicists to quantities in in algebraic geometry are too interesting from a mathematical standpoint to let lay couched in the formalism of path integrals. The book gives many examples of mirror symmetry constructions that are rigorous mathematically, most of these involving toric varieties. A general methodology for finding the mirror of a given Calabi-Yau manifold is still unknown according to the author. By far the best chapter in the book is the one on quantum cohomology, as this tool has so many applications in algebraic and symplectic geometry. One is always impressed on the originality and breadth of ideas that have been employed in this subject. There are several topics in mirror symmetry that are not discussed in the book, but even with these omissions, this is a fine addition to the literature on the subject. One question that immediately arises when thinking about mirror symmetry is there is anything that is interesting in the case of Calabi-Yau manifolds over finite fields. The special case that comes to mind is for elliptic curves. Are mirrors of Calabi-Yau manifolds easier to find in the finite field case and does the mirror have a group operation related to the one on the original manifold (elliptic curve)? These questions are not addressed in this book, but answering them may have important ramifications for applications of mirror symmetry to the field of cryptography for example.

A Must Read - especially for babyboomers
Sin of Omission grabs you from the beginning and holds you captive so that you must continue reading until the end. The content is rich and colorful; at some points familiar, at others unknown and intriguing.
The history of the characters made them come alive on the page. I was transported back, first to Russia and later to my own childhood of the 50's and 60's in America. I felt as though I were a part of the circle of friends who kept secrets as bloodbrothers and played familiar games with sacred rules.
David Evans Katz describes the scenery, the games played, and the characters' emotions so that you become a character yourself; experiencing all that they experience. Even if you were born later in life, I believe some of your parents' and grandparents' stories will come alive again in Sin of Omission.
Kudos to the author and his talented storytelling!

Great Storytelling
Sin of Omission is storytelling at its best. The novel combines elements of mystery, history and irony in an extremely intelligent manner. In tracing a multi-generational feud between Jewish and Gentile families, beginning in Russia and later in Massachusetts, David Evans Katz addresses the important subjects of ethnic bigotry and stereotyping. Most of all, the book is a coming of age story, focusing on Danny and Matt and a traumatic event they witness as 10-year olds. The novel includes a number of stories within the overall story, including even a gripping ghost mystery. In sum, Sin of Omission is a beautifully woven quilt. I loved it and recommend it highly.

Sin of Omission is a great read!
The principal action of the story takes place in the summer of 1962 when a twelve-year-old boy and his best friend witness a murder. They lie to the police to protect the killer because he's a friend, but forty years later, one of them is forced to deal with the consequences of the cover-up. Much of the early part of the book deals with the family of the narrator/protagonist and how their lives have affected him and the decision he made to protect his friend. The protagonist's own story -- the crime and its aftermath -- turns nostalgia on its ear by showing that the happy and innocent past we all long for wasn't always happy or innocent. Sin of Omission is filled with genuine pathos and believable characters. I enjoyed it tremendously and hope to see more from this author.
