Christmas reflections
The Mythic Meaning of Christmas is a unique retelling of the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus. The book itself is simple and spare, leaving room for every reader to bring themselves to it. All through the book, the reader is invited to meditate on their personal meaning of Christmas. It offers suggestions for making changes to strengthen your satisfaction with your own life and those around you. It would be an ideal Christmas activity to be done with parents and children together. Many children today don't understand the concept of reflection and how important a process it is for maturing into a sensitive adult. What better way to learn than in a family situation. I think it should be part of everyone's Christmas celebration.

Experience Christmas in Your Own Life - A Book for Everyone
This book takes us on a journey. We travel through each event in the Christmas story and look at its meaning in our own lives.

This experience does just what you would expect - It makes the birth of Christ feel real to us. How would you feel if an angel told you you would become pregnant, but not with a man? You would probably talk to a trusted friend, as Mary did when she went to visit her cousin Elisabeth. How would you feel if you were pregnant and bouncing on a donkey across miles and miles of desert? Haven't you walked your own tiring journeys in obedience to your parents, your teachers, your country? How would you feel to hear about events so significant you would be compelled to travel far to be part of them? Think of the people who travel to distant places to experience an eclipse of the sun. The grandparents who travel to see their new grandchildren.

Feel the excitement, the body fatigue, the joy and hope of the Christmas story as you live it in your own life.

This has always been the purpose of myth, to understand greater truths. By applying the mythical elements of a story to events in our own lives, we rebirth in ourselves the joys and hopes and travails of human life.

Do not believe that viewing Christ's life as myth lessens its message. On the contrary, this exercise helped me feel the joy of Christmas I hadn't felt since I was a child.

And do not pass this by because you are not Christian. It is for everyone. When you pick up a storybook to read the myths of another culture, you do so to understand that culture, to learn the way it understands truth. As you will see, the Christmas myth can apply to any life.

In this time of world chaos, the Christmas message of peace and love is extremely important. Experience it, share it with your family, your friends, your spiritual group. It really is for everyone. At anytime.

The Mythic Meaning of Christmas- it's inspiring!
The Mythic Meaning of Christmas is a book I could not put down until I finished reading it. Then I felt compelled to read it again more slowly and let every word be absorbed into my being. The book asks that we connect with our true selves and to give birth to a new quality in our lives. It leads us through steps to attain this goal. It is truly a magnificent journey. The more you read the Mythic Meaning of Christmas the more you will appreciate and love it. It is the perfect gift for all on your Christmas list- young and old.

Christmas Presence
This is not only a wonderful book but a beautiful experience for yourself or your whole family. It does not matter what faith you may be, this book helps you to discover yourself and to help you see what you offer to the world. Beautifully written, it helps to bring the magick of the season to every day.

inner peace
at atime when life is moving at such a fast pace, this book allows us to slow down, achieve inner peace and hopefully communicate this to others.

A Beautiful Gift to Someone or to Yourself
I highly recommend this book for anyone of any faith. I am not a Christian and yet I felt very comfortable reading it. It has a wonderful spiritual message for anybody. It would certainly make a great Christmas present but the message it presents is for any day of the year. It is a small book that reads very easily and yet it has a profound message that anyone could understand and appreciate.

The Pop-up Mice of Mr. Brice
This is one of the cutest childrens books I have ever seen. I bought one for my daughter when she was little and now I buy them as gifts for other young children I know.

A fun teaching book
My three-year old loves this book, and I do too. It's cute and clever, and it's helping me teach him skills like measuring with a ruler and telling time. The alphabet flap sequence is a bit more imaginative than some of the other dull flap bookes.

Very cute and useful book!

Yay! Pop-up book!
I had this book when I was little and I loved it. I managed to ruin part of it and I gave it to my best friend. She still has it, but isn't willing to part with it anytime soon. I'm thinking of saving up my money to buy a new one. Your child will love it!

3rd Editon The Fifth Kingdom 2001
The Fifth Kingdom is indeed an excellent treatment on the fungi kingdom. A lively text makes this topic approachable to most. I would also highly recommend the CDROM Dr. Kendrick has produced to go with the text. Over 3000 colour images and animations have been included which really brings the topic to life. He has placed many of these chapters online at his site mycolog com . I would recommend a visit there to anyone who would like to learn more about either the text or CD.

Please reprint!
I too have read this text and found it excellent. Alas, I now want to buy it (and use it as a text in my class) but it is no longer in print. I hope it is reprinted soon and if it is-BUY IT!

A textbook as readable as a novel and a lot more useful
I am most disappointed that the book is not available. I was only able to read half a copy that I found lying around before its owner reclaimed it. It is an excellent example of how a usable textbook should be written in the modern style: simply, elegantly, readably, no nonsense, full of sound material. It is rich in context and full of surprises. Every entry makes connections and interconnections. It deals entertainly, but matter-of-factly, with amazing items and their biological significance, without ignoring everyday ones and leaves the reader with an integrated comprehension and a renewed respect for the subject matter. Even though I am a biologist, I had always looked on the fungi with a certain lack of enthusiasm, dating from some appallingly boring classes at university. This book brought the kingdom back to life for me.

It is functional, reasonably comprehensive, and, importantly, it is fun to read. It reinforces the view of the interconnectedness and variety of living things.

I hope it is soon reprinted.

Last Settlers (Emerging Writers in Creative Nonfiction)

Moving portrait of life on The Last Frontier
This is one of the finest books I have read about Alaska. This is a spare, unsentimental portrait of what life in Alaska is really like--both beautiful and harsh. This is not a book that romanticizes homesteading or the poverty of these homesteaders' lives; instead they come alive through the Brice's crystaline prose and her use of defining detail. Here is real life--people struggling to make lives for themselves in a country that is neither easy nor forgiving. The stark, black and white photographs that accompany the book add a beautiful and moving element. If you want to know what life on the frontier can really be like, read this book.

well-written, thoughtful look at 20th century homesteading
The author presents a thoughtful and thought provoking look at an oft misunderstood concept: homesteading in the wilds of Alaska. The reader is held in awe at the tenacity of these latter day pioneers who have chosen a lifestyle far removed from the experience of most of us in the lower forty-eight.

Thought provoking look at the last true American Frontier.
Intimate but respectful study of a unique breed of modern day pioneers in one of the last really remote places in America. Well done glimpse into a world of determination and dreams that most can only imagine.

The Remembrance

The Remembrance by Kendall F. Person
To start, I felt very in tune with each character. The development of each kept my interest peaked and and anticipatory of the plot. The entire story spoke more literally than a typical fiction; I felt as if I was directly involved with each person. Interestingly, I have not had a lot of experience with hardship, lack of money, or lack of opportunity, yet could very easily empathize with this story because it smacks of reality. I feel volumes of strength can be derived for those who are less fortunate if they take a day to read this. And, it most certainly can provide insight and understanding to people such as myself who don't struggle to live. More to the point of the story, I was given a safe way to discover another way of life that can be totally challenging to those involved or could be a more unfortunate turning point, as is more often portrayed.

Engaging!!
All of the great elements of storytelling are encompassed in this fast-paced, erotic thriller. If you are looking for a book to keep you yearning for more, then this is the novel for you.

Mind stimulating and erotically engaging!
The Remembrance has all the qualities of a cult classic and a major Hollywood hit. High drama, eroticism, pyschos and a tender love story knotted up in the middle. A literary enthusiast hardly gets a chance to catch their breathe before this talented author takes you from one climax to another, often leaving the reader breathless in the process. The story evolves around Browne and Misty, married medical students and obviously on shaky ground. From the opening line, we instantly recognize trouble in Browne's eyes and feel a sense of angered pity with Misty for accepting her submissive position within the confines of their marriage. As the author whisks you from one dynamic scene to the next, where he introduces new characters, takes us inside the hallowed halls of historic universities and into the lives of terminal patients, I couldn't help but wonder why Kendall F. Person hasn't hit the bestseller list to date. It's not just his writing style, which appears effortless and transforming, but the story is as original as a Quentin Tarentino screenplay. Each chapter ends on a cliffhanger challenging the reader to put the book down before arriving at the unheard of triple climatic ending. If The Remembrance doesn't scare the lving daylights out of you, if it doesn't leave you in a state of awe or send you on a wild shopping spree to pick up the rest of Person's works (Capturing Spring, An Angry World) it will certainly leave you scratching your head wondering where in God's name did he come up with that.

Brice Marden: Work of the 1990s: Paintings, Drawings, and Prints

His finest work yet
Brice Marden has been considered a master of his craft for nearly three decades and his recent paintings are the most powerful yet. Abandoning the rigid rectangles of his previous work, Marden has embarked upon a looser, yet structural form. The surface and application are still meticulate, reminding one of the sensuality of the oil and beeswax mix of the 60's work. Using what seems to be Oriental calligraphy and free-form drawing as inspiration, these new works are at once arresting in their complexity and somber in their exquisite use of color. He has taken his extensive knowledge of color from the 'rectangle' years and applied them to this new series of intersecting and twisting lines. I find myself in awe of these paintings, having seen some them in New York two years ago and this catalog has faithful reproductions, an oversize format and a very fair price

The Case of Jennie Brice
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (1997)
Author: Mary Roberts Rinehart
Amazon base price: $5.50
Average review score:

Not at all dated
This book was written in 1912, but unless readers take the time to check out the publication history in the front of the book, they will probably never guess that this book is almost a century old. The Case of Jenny Brice is still an intriguing murder mystery with a realistic heroine. What strikes me most about this (and others by Rinehart) is that as you read, you don't think, "This is an amazing book to have been written 100 years ago." You think simply, "What an amazing book." This is a very short book, actually more of a novella, which makes it an excellent book to read when you can take a day just to enjoy a good mystery.

The Case of Jenny Brice is atmospherically set during a flood in a boardinghouse of a poor Pittsburgh neighborhood. From the very beginning, Rinehart develops a real sense of place. Unlike too many amateur detectives in novels, this heroine has a believable reason for being involved in the case. Again, seen as a product of 1912, Miss Pittman is an especially extraordinary woman, but even without that in mind, she is a convincing character. The Case of Jenny Bright has been referred to as not one of Rinehart's most outstanding mysteries, but in light of the stiff competition from her other novels, that is not really a criticism.

Compared with many of today's better mysteries, The Case of Jenny Bright holds its own. It is not just a curiosity because of its age; it is a fascinating mystery in its own right.

Children of Promise: Literate Activity in Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Classrooms (Nea School Restructuring Series)

Meaningful Literacy for Diverse Students
Heath's Ways With Words and Children of Promise have shaped my views on teaching literacy. I recommend starting with Children of Promise because it is succinct and powerful. If you are a busy teacher looking for something short that will get you thinking, this is for you. In this monograph the authors chronicle the efforts of schools to make literacy lessons engaging and meaningful for culturally and linguistically diverse students. The programs described give students an opportunity to engage in adult forms of literacy. A middle school class tutors kindergarteners. They videotape and examine sessions discussing their strategies. At the end they collectively draft a pamphlet giving kindergarten parents advice on reading to their children. This program and the others described encourage students to examine their use of language and to use language for real purposes. These types of lessons are especially helpful for students who are non-native speakers of English or who speak non-standard forms of English. If you enjoy this you must also look at Heath's Ways With Words which describes her early work with African-American children in the Southeast.

An oracle of universal spirit!
This oracle is beautiful. Tho the setting is Christian, it is an oracle of the universal spirit. I've only skimmed it thus far, but very much appreciate the questions and suggestions sections, which give LOTS a specificty that many oracular interpretations lack. The book is informative and well laid-out. Blessings on DORIAN for creating a guiding light for many.

Nancy Brady Cunningham, author - FEEDING THE SPIRIT, I AM WOMAN BY RITE, and TAROT CELEBRATIONS

Casting Lots
I can't say enough good things about this book and card set. It most certainly will change lives. The guidance is always profound, you may find the truth hard to swallow at times but God doesn't pull any punches. I highly recommend this to anyone seeking, asking and not sure. Allow yourself enough time to ponder and meditate on readings and you will find your answer is surely there. I wish I could give it 10 stars

This is a wonderful/spiritual/metaphysical system of aid.
Hello, I loved the book and the cards. They bridge the gap between organized religion and metaphysics. They add depth and meaning when used in conjunction with the tarot. The book addressed my heart, as I feel much the same way as the author. This system is wonderful!!!
