Fascinating!
I was totally amazed at the greatness and importance of Mosby. If only there were more men like him in the South! His valiant deeds extended the war (not that long wars are better) quite a bit, I think. This book shows you a new (at least not as well known) aspect of the Civil War. Those of you who love the South will find their hearts beating as Mosby makes his dashing raides behind Yankee lines. It is almost unbelievable! Get it, by all means.

Lost Opportunity for the South (& Viet Nam)
I would suspect that this book never made it to the shelves of West Point. The West Point Generals in the Civil War (as well as Vietnam) just never understood Guerilla warfare. If Generals Lee and Westmoreland had only employed Mosby's techniques, we would have won both wars (I'm from Virginia). In reading the book from this point of view, it was a real "Fountainhead." Ranger Mosby was Roak in every sense of the word. He was daring, he persevered, and he endured. The book brought to life more than any other book I've read (including Cold Mountain) the excitement of that era.

Informative history and exciting reading - a must read!
I have read Mosby's Memoirs, Mosby's Rangers and Rebel-The Life & Times of John Singleton Mosby. Ranger Mosby by Virgil C Jones is the best of the lot. An insight to the adventurous daring of Mosby and his men; an event in history never to be repeated by men of such daring and cunning skills. Required reading for every Civil War enthusiast.

Pure facination for those who really enjoy the Civil War
As a civil war buff who enjoys touring, I unexpectedly lucked onto this rare, out of print,1991 edition in a major bookstore recently. It was the only copy on the shelf. I devoured it in conjunction a Blue & Gray magazine trilogy about John Singleton Mosby's exploits during the war in Virginia. This Evans/Moyer book is loaded with neat little tid-bits of information about the man, himself, his many facinating associates and opponents, their controversial engagements and the multitude of specific locations where his "Rangers" operated from 1863 to 1865.Fortunately, many of these sites are still available in beautiful, historic, north-central Virginia. I give it 5 stars even though it's map/diagrams are confusing and can only be understood with the assistance of updated, fully detailed maps. Despite these defects the book deserves such a rating.

Excellent information on Colonel Mosby and his mission.
Thoroughly researched and entertaining, this rare and compelling book is a must have for Civil War enthusiasts. Bravo!!

Dense History
This is an incredibly dense historical account of Confederate guerrilla warfare in the areas of northern and western Virginia. The author obviously did his homework with hundreds of quotes and references. The book was so detailed as to occasionally lose the reader. A map certainly would have helped. I got the feeling that every single guerrilla attack was accounted for in this book.

On the strong side were some amusing and touching accounts of individuals and incidents. On the weak side was the page after page of oh-so-so similar accounts of attacks. The book also centered on the Virginia area guerrillas with hardly a mention of those in Missouri and Kansas.

The author's theory, that the Civil War - or at least Lee's surrender - was delayed by at least months by the work of the guerrillas is well-substantiated in the book. However, I think the author would have been better served to apend more time on the larger picture and overview and less time on every derailment on the B&O Railroad.

Worth reading for a serious Civil War buff. A bit too much for the casual reader of Civil War material.
