Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

PHESANT HUNTERS THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!!!
Please excuse my spelling, it's terrible This book is terrific. I started reading this book and couldn't put it down. It is a fine collection of stories ranging from the great soilbank days when Kansas alone had 4 million birds to the Royal hunts in Europe where an average daily bag mesaures in the thousands, It has stories more like mine where the average hunt ends with tired dogs and few birds. The book through it's many differant authors also explores the ethics associated with hunting. This book is for the bird hunter who's cleaning his gun for the third time this week when hunting season isn;t for 6 months. It's for the guy who can't stop dreaming of how his new pup will do his first time out. It's for the guy who spends more time with his dogs than with his wife. All hunters will enjoy this book, but the true bird hunter won;t be able to put it down.

Worth reading.
The description of Mrs. Mary McCray as an adult in Montclair, New Jersey and her struggles for "full freedom" are truly inspiring. I felt as if I was sitting in that kitchen listening to the anecdotes as they were told. I found the early part of the book, however, to read like a research paper with the footnotes included.

A New View of the History of American Race Relations
It seems to me that this book, along with Edward Ball's Slaves in the Family, offers a new and important look at the history of race relations in America. Both of them deal with situations that were not unique, but carefully swept under the rug. I applaud both authors for their work, and since Mrs. McCray has said she's writing another book, there is at least one reader, here in the nation's oldest city, who is anxiously awaiting it.

Carrie McCray is an American treasure, a must read!!!
Ms McCray's ability to put us back in time is timeless, a true depiction of how life was and is for so many African Americans...Her ability to convey the innocence of childhood and reality through the eyes of her mother and through her own experience is something extrodinary. A warm and compassionate story of love, triumph, and struggle through one of the darkest times in American history. Written very tenderly so you can smell the warm pies and cakes baked in the Allen home, the flowers that she nurtured. Her legacy? Her children who were reared with self respect and taught to be proud of who they are as a people. Freedoms Child is a must read for all, black or white, it will grip you leaving you laughing, crying and ulitmately wishing we could have been there. A story of a mother and the love she gave her children. A story of a woman in the "Red Hat" who would not lie down. A story of coming of age. A story that every American should read. When you finish this book you will just sit back and smile! I know because Carrie Allen McCray is my Grandmother!! Lane McCray

Review from a photographer
I bought this book last week from a mail order. However, I was kind of disappointed about this book as a young portrait photographer. 1) This book talks nothing about photography lighting. (Because of the name called "Light and Illusion") It only talks about Ray Jones' photography life. 2) The quality of the photos in this book is not very good (Except few of them have great quality.) I also read "Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits" which has very good quality of pictures. (I am not too sure that is because George Hurrell always used 8x10, 4x5 camera so his picture quliy in that book is consistency). Anyway, this is my opining.

An Insider's Look At The Glamour Days of Hollywood
During the 30's and 40's, Hollywood helped America climb out of the Depression by painting glamourous fantasies with stars who were larger than life. As the head photographer at Universal Studios during this important time in American history, Ray Jones was instrumental in creating and defining this "Glamour Era" of Hollywood. The book goes into some detail about how Jones created his special look, but the true joy here is thumbing through the numerous examples of Jones' exceptional talent. The photos span the three decades of Jones' carrer in Hollywood (from the 30's to the 50's) and the featured stars read like a Who's Who of Hollywood. Also featured are Jones' six Acadamy Award-winning photos (the award has since been discontinued) including a memorable one of John Wayne. For those who long for the good ol' days of Hollywood, this is a wonderful look at how the stars were made.

Interesting Book!
I read this book for a school assignment. Since I live near Pittsburgh I found this book to be particularly interesting. It is written about a time long ago, when my Grandfather was young. It is a great book for kids, and it will help them learn about what things were like during the Depression.
