It was also sad at a couple of points, but mostly it was side-splittingly, painfully familiarly, hilarious!!
I fell in love with Mark Darcy's character. I went and saw the movie of the first book soon after I finished this sequel, and I wanted them to tack part two onto the end of it!! I couldn't stop talking about it.
Bridge also shows her vulnerable side a little more in this offering, growing up a little (but don't fret - not too much!) along the way. Her friends Jude and Shazzer also provide us with plenty of laughs, as does her Mum with her new project - an African tribesman!!
One of the funniest parts is Bridget's interview with one of her most beloved celebrities. You've gotta read this book! (Read the first one first of course) It's beautiful!
There was a setback, the whole death threat thing, for a minute there I thought I was reading a mystery novel (I hate mystery novels) -- but other than that, it is great! I was cracking up on the subway train on my way to work this morning while I read the chapter in which she was interviewing Colin Firth -- the actor who played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. The people on the train were staring at me, but I couldn't help it, it was too funny.
I know it sounds insane but I do wish Miss Fielding writes another Bridget Jones novel. I would happily buy all the Bridget Jones novels available!
Oh -- and I loved the whole Jane Austen feel. The original was Pride and Prejudice, and this time around, Persuasion. There were also the essential Jane Austen elements, such as the gossiping, giggling, and obsession with men. Loved it!

Obsession with self-help, yet a life with constant self-deception and self-justification (e.g., "it doesn't matter if I break a New Year's resolution on 1st January because everyone knows that the new year starts on 2nd January" is a classic) and the focus on weight loss are further examples of today's women. Also, the mirror into the way women relate to each other is fascinating. A girls' night out is the framework and excuse to indulge themselves into endless glutony and booze.
In my opinion, this trashy book has incredibly been a real success with women because, as soap operas, female readers relate to it. As a man, this makes me quite disappointed.
Some of the scenes were a little different or longer in the book and I liked that. Other things were explained more in the novel which I was glad. Reading the trials and tribulations of a singleton thirty-something with boss problems and men problems and a little mix of mom and dad problems was a refreshing read from the usual fare of 'chick lit' I have been running across.
Alot of authors are trying to recreate the magic of Bridget Jones, but they fall short of the witty and most oftentimes hysterical turns of Ms Jones's life.
Bridget is unhappy with her weight, her job, her boss, her lovelife and her bad habits(drinking too much wine and smoking). Determined to do something about it after New Year's disasterous turkey curry buffet with her mom and dad and their friends, she sets herself up for a year of hysterical twists and turns that lead her into the next Christmas wondering what went wrong.
Written in diary format, we see everything from her point of view and how she thinks and operates. The secondary characters of Shazzer and Jude, Sharon, Daniel, Mark Darcy and Vile Richard(also in the movie) make many appearances in the book and add humor and many hours of laughter.
Well worth the read!!!
Fielding brilliantly skews the values of Bridget from the original Elizabeth Bennet's perfection and strength. Bridget isn't principled and upright, she's a quivering mass of hysterically funny insecurities and bad habits like smoking, drinking and procrastination.
Yes, if you're familiar with Pride and Prejudice, you may see some of the plot points coming from miles away, but if you love P&P, you'll enjoy this romp. If you've never read Austen's lovely book, try Bridget first and then get acquainted with Pride and Prejudice. They make great companions!
Bridget promises a laugh a page as well as some strikingly realistic glimpses of the delicate modern singleton's psyche. Don't miss this book!

Mr. Darcy turns into a softened form of Captain Wentworth, ready to marry or rather - in this day and age - shack up with anybody who takes his fancy and who has an opinion of that is entirely her own.
Bridget stands by and watches, and, like Anne, is accosted by small children, keeps her head in a crisis, observes the blind love of Darcy's parents for one another, endures with pleasure how Darcy's father cannot remember women's first names, has a terrible fright when she thinks Darcy is married to someone else, receives a letter and watches as an injured woman falls in love with Benwick over books. Not quite the poetry that Jane Austen had in mind though, but more up-to-date literature. At the end she knows it is time to make choices of her own...
Towards the end the story takes a turn that stretches belief a little bit, but the last chapters make everything OK again.
This book makes quite enjoyable reading.
