Persuasion on the edge of reason
The Edge of Reason is another hilarious episode from the chaotic life of Bridget Jones who follows closely the footsteps of Jane Austen's heroines. Now that she has - like Elizabeth Bennet - coupled up with Darcy, she - like Anne Elliott - lets her friends and self help books persuade her to take a course that will lose her the love of her life.

Mr. Darcy turns into a softened form of Captain Wentworth, ready to marry or rather - in this day and age - shack up with anybody who takes his fancy and who has an opinion of that is entirely her own.

Bridget stands by and watches, and, like Anne, is accosted by small children, keeps her head in a crisis, observes the blind love of Darcy's parents for one another, endures with pleasure how Darcy's father cannot remember women's first names, has a terrible fright when she thinks Darcy is married to someone else, receives a letter and watches as an injured woman falls in love with Benwick over books. Not quite the poetry that Jane Austen had in mind though, but more up-to-date literature. At the end she knows it is time to make choices of her own...

Towards the end the story takes a turn that stretches belief a little bit, but the last chapters make everything OK again.

This book makes quite enjoyable reading.

People; Not Just Cars
This is not just a book about cars. It's about people, corporate culture, and a company town. Helen Earley was an Oldsmobile employee for many years. Yes, she discusses the cars and the ups and downs of Oldsmobile. However, the reader also gets background on what it was like to work and live in Lansing, MI, the home of Oldsmobile. Thus, readers see the interweaving of corporate cuture and community that make up a company town. Because of that, this is not just a book for Oldsmobile fans. It is also a very interesting piece of business and social history.

Excellent Oldsmobile information source
Excellent information about Oldsmobile's cars and people.

Children's Safety
My Mum (Helen Hollick) wrote this book for me when I was 4 years old - I am now 18. She wrote it because she wanted to tell me, in a way that I would remember, how to keep myself safe from being abducted or hurt by "strangers". COME AND TELL ME has a simple and straightforward message that all children can easily remember and ACT UPON should the need arise - always TELL before you GO, whether with a friend or someone you don't know, always COME AND TELL. Something like 75% of child abduction is committed by someone the child vaguely knows - i.e. a neighbour, or that nice man Mummy occasionally says hello to. It's no good saying "don't go with strangrs" young children don't actually know what the definition of a stranger is! Be safe, read COME AND TELL ME to your child, it's not only informative, but a lovely little story as well!

A fantastic tool for divination
This kit of a book and full set of tarot cards is a fantastic tool for divination and self-analysis. Helen Jones' beautiful graphics provide an understandable interpretation of the meaning of the cards, which helps the novice reader to recall the symbolism with ease. The book gives clear explanations of what the cards mean in a historical, astrological and alchemical context which makes for an interesting read even when not actually doing spreads. The sample readings offered are a useful reference tool, to illustrate the way the different cards work together to create a unique outcome. The only criticism I would have of this book is that of the 4 different spreads offered as a tool only 2 of them are really suitable for those new to reading the cards, as 13 and 21 cards to a spread makes the reading quite intricate and difficult. An excellent gift for the spiritual person!

The things writers will do for money.
I saw the movie and thought it was pleasantly funny. Renee's Bridget was a charmingly endearing loser who gets the perfect guy at the end. So I got the sequel to see the analysis of finally getting the perfect love. Mistake! I think Ms. Fielding has great talent, but in this rush to get out another book she resorts to things that get you spanked even in a high school creative writing class (nude, schizo Asian in Mark Darcy's bed, Thai prison, drug dealing, death plot, bad contractor, Mark popping up unexpectedly everywhere and then just as quickly disappearing, etc.) This book reads like a choppy, sarcastic harlequin romance. But worse than that is I can't believe all these women identify with Bridget. From this book's description of her, Bridget doesn't seem to have much going for her, she's not intelligent (note the Germany thing or the law society dinner), smokes and drinks too much (not much impulse control for someone in their 30's), and if she were my employee I'd fire her (chronically late, lies, and when given the opportunity to improve her career mucks it up because she's so disorganized and lazy), she also can't cook for herself or clean up after herself. So why does she merit the one dimensional perfect guy? Just 'cause? Just 'cause Bridget likes to shag (plenty of girls do) and she is desparately emotionally needy (oh, guys just love that!) Don't get me wrong, there is some fun dialogue in here amongst her friends, I'm just not sure it's worth the effort.

Bridget, you may not believe it, but you improve with age!!
You don't know how much I loved this book. I was pissing myself laughing from page one!! I put off reading it, because I didn't think it could live up to its predecessor, but it was better - there was more of a journey to it, more a feeling of being swept along in the chaotic, but wonderful (I think) life of Bridge.
It was also sad at a couple of points, but mostly it was side-splittingly, painfully familiarly, hilarious!!

I fell in love with Mark Darcy's character. I went and saw the movie of the first book soon after I finished this sequel, and I wanted them to tack part two onto the end of it!! I couldn't stop talking about it.

Bridge also shows her vulnerable side a little more in this offering, growing up a little (but don't fret - not too much!) along the way. Her friends Jude and Shazzer also provide us with plenty of laughs, as does her Mum with her new project - an African tribesman!!

One of the funniest parts is Bridget's interview with one of her most beloved celebrities. You've gotta read this book! (Read the first one first of course) It's beautiful!

Hurrah, Bridget!
This novel was a great read, it was hilarious. May I say that I think it's funnier than the original. Of course, it is not very different from the original -- she is still trying to quit smoking and trying to lose weight, but the heroine seems a little more together this time around.

There was a setback, the whole death threat thing, for a minute there I thought I was reading a mystery novel (I hate mystery novels) -- but other than that, it is great! I was cracking up on the subway train on my way to work this morning while I read the chapter in which she was interviewing Colin Firth -- the actor who played Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. The people on the train were staring at me, but I couldn't help it, it was too funny.

I know it sounds insane but I do wish Miss Fielding writes another Bridget Jones novel. I would happily buy all the Bridget Jones novels available!

Oh -- and I loved the whole Jane Austen feel. The original was Pride and Prejudice, and this time around, Persuasion. There were also the essential Jane Austen elements, such as the gossiping, giggling, and obsession with men. Loved it!

Literary value = nil - Window to women's anxieties = five
Thre are two ways in which an eventual reader could enjoy this book: either if s/he wants to spend time with an easy-read piece of trash or if s/he (especially a "he") wants to understand what the typical anxieties of today's woman are. Undoubtly, these anxieties are exaggerated in Bridget, but by and large, the stress of social interaction, the pressures of family and friends to have a partner with whom to form a committed relationship, and above all, the anxiety of the clock ticking and Bridget losing her fertile years are a reflection of what females experience.

Obsession with self-help, yet a life with constant self-deception and self-justification (e.g., "it doesn't matter if I break a New Year's resolution on 1st January because everyone knows that the new year starts on 2nd January" is a classic) and the focus on weight loss are further examples of today's women. Also, the mirror into the way women relate to each other is fascinating. A girls' night out is the framework and excuse to indulge themselves into endless glutony and booze.

In my opinion, this trashy book has incredibly been a real success with women because, as soap operas, female readers relate to it. As a man, this makes me quite disappointed.

Funny and Original Read!
I aw the movie first and loved it and wanted to read the book. The book was just as funny and original as the movie, although slightly different.
Some of the scenes were a little different or longer in the book and I liked that. Other things were explained more in the novel which I was glad. Reading the trials and tribulations of a singleton thirty-something with boss problems and men problems and a little mix of mom and dad problems was a refreshing read from the usual fare of 'chick lit' I have been running across.
Alot of authors are trying to recreate the magic of Bridget Jones, but they fall short of the witty and most oftentimes hysterical turns of Ms Jones's life.
Bridget is unhappy with her weight, her job, her boss, her lovelife and her bad habits(drinking too much wine and smoking). Determined to do something about it after New Year's disasterous turkey curry buffet with her mom and dad and their friends, she sets herself up for a year of hysterical twists and turns that lead her into the next Christmas wondering what went wrong.
Written in diary format, we see everything from her point of view and how she thinks and operates. The secondary characters of Shazzer and Jude, Sharon, Daniel, Mark Darcy and Vile Richard(also in the movie) make many appearances in the book and add humor and many hours of laughter.
Well worth the read!!!

Pride and Bridget
Some retellings of classics are just authors trotting out a successful plotline in a tired way under the guise of literary awareness, but Bridget Jones is not a tired narrative. Fielding, using Pride and Prejudice as her jumping off point, dives head first into the hapless world of young singleton Bridget and her romance with Mr. Darcy.

Fielding brilliantly skews the values of Bridget from the original Elizabeth Bennet's perfection and strength. Bridget isn't principled and upright, she's a quivering mass of hysterically funny insecurities and bad habits like smoking, drinking and procrastination.

Yes, if you're familiar with Pride and Prejudice, you may see some of the plot points coming from miles away, but if you love P&P, you'll enjoy this romp. If you've never read Austen's lovely book, try Bridget first and then get acquainted with Pride and Prejudice. They make great companions!

Bridget promises a laugh a page as well as some strikingly realistic glimpses of the delicate modern singleton's psyche. Don't miss this book!
