Critically important guidelines for healthy habits.
Steven Jonas, M.D. is a nationally recognized health-care expert. He teaches preventive medicine, and has written several books on staying healthy. He's teamed up with another health writer, Maria Kassberg Regan, to produce Help Your Man Get Healthy: An Essential Guide For Every Caring Woman. Dr. Jonas and Regan say that "studies have shown conclusively that both heart disease and cancer--the top two killers in the nation--can be prevented by avoiding negative health habits and engaging in certain positive ones." They then describe the common negative habits, such as smoking, and helpful positive habits, such as reducing stress. They've included a chart which shows the number of years life can be shortened by each negative habit compared with the number of years gained by following a few positive habits. Obviously people are responsible for their own health habits, so why did Regan and Dr. Jonas write a guide for women to help improve their husband's health? Women already have enough responsibilities! They offer several reasons, including the fact that men simply don't know as much about good health practices as women do. For example, most women's magazines print lots of health-related articles; few men's magazines are health-oriented. Regan and Dr. Jonas do not advocate making women responsible for their man's health--their goal is to give women the tools they need to encourage good habits in all those they care about. They provide several quick and simple quizzes to help readers zero in on various kinds of difficulties. They then provide extensive information on motivation-- yes, men are motivated in much different ways than women are. They also provide tips on communicating effectively with men. For example, men prefer hard information to empathy. Dr. Jonas and Regan maintain that "for many, healthy habits mark the difference between a life that's long and vigorous and one that's curtailed by chronic disease or shortened by death." Readers will find that Help Your Man Get Healthy will provide the guidelines and assistance they need to help those they love develop healthy habits and improve the quality of their lives.

Notable for its practicality - and it works!
The topic, I'm sure, is on the minds of many married couples. Kassberg and Jonas define a collaborative approach to toughening up the oafish husband - softened by marriage and the attendant collapse of physical self-discipline - that's as effective as it is commonsensical. Real-life examples are particularly instructive, and the benefits of the approach become evident within days, not weeks, as the reader "gets on the same team" as the target partner in the battle against sloth, weakness and ill-health. Easy-to-read, well-researched, and original, this book is the right answer to the age-old question, "What the hell happened to the guy I married - and what can I do about it?" Buy this one today.

An enjoyable (and healthy) read for men too!
As a man, I read "Help Your Man" with not just a little bit of skepticism (we don't need any help!) but was I ever surprised! "Help Your Man" provides clear and understandable synopses of relevant and common health related matters which can be prevented or improved by simple changes of behavior. It is all coupled with simple, common sense (but not obvious) suggestions on how to help your man (or yourself!) change those unhealthy behaviors. Besides all that, it reads quite nicely!

It's like a one-stop-shop for such information. I will be sure to keep it handy!

A REAL BOOK FOR REAL WOMEN!
Finally a book that does not make Plus Size sound FAT and unhealthy. I think this book is great and gives a realistic approach to weight. Not a "Diet" book but a "real life" book that you can apply to your own lifestyle whatever you size is.

Focus on Health, not Weight
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It does a great job of encouraging people of all sizes to make little changes in their lives that will lead to improved health, not necessarily weight loss (although that could happen as well). What I really liked about this book was that their beginning program was designed for true beginners! Most beginning exercise programs start with 30 minutes 3-4 times/week. The goal of this book is to get you into the habit of exercising, not tire you out at the beginning. It starts you with 3 10-minute sessions for the first two weeks. You can do that! You gradually build to doing 3 30-minute sessions over 13 weeks. The book doesn't leave you there, either... it offers a phase 2 intermediate program and then a choice of 2 phase 3 maintenance programs. One which is more challenging than the other. The book is filled with profiles of large active fit people--regular people and celebrities--which are truly encouraging. There are aerobics instructors who weigh more than 200 pounds, people over 300 pounds as well. People of every size proving that you can be large and fit and healthy. The book also covers healthy eating, emotional eating, and other topics. One thing I really liked about this book is that they also talked about other topics related to health, such as wearing seat belts, going to the doctor for a Pap smear, and quiting smoking. All in all, a motivating empowering book! Also check out Glenn Gaesser's "Big Fat Lies" and Marilyn Wann's "Fat!So?".

A groundbraeking book
In this world of weight loss and diet books, finally a book that makes sense. Just The Weigh You Are is a no nonsense book that encourages people, no matter what size, to live healthier lifestyles. Between some of the chapters are the personal stories of people from all walks who have battled with weight and self image issues all their lives. This is a very straight-forward, no nonsense book which gives real insight into taking better care of yourself, stopping self-loathing and taking control. Whether you are thinking of losing some pounds or struggling with self acceptance, it is a must read.

Very inspirational, but too basic
Steven Jonas does a very good job motivating 1st timers for a triathlon, but if you've ever participated in ANY sport competitively, this book is just too basic. It's more of a primer for healthy living with basic stretching, basic swim, bike & run skills included. Fantastic for anyone starting an excerise program for the 1st time, but definitely not for anyone remotely athletic.

Good beginner info
I read this book before competing in my first triathlon and found it extremely helpful and supportive. I recommend it to anyone who is considering training for a triathlon. Jonas is great at making you feel like you can accomplish anything. His advice is simple and solid. My only criticism is that he focuses too little on female triathletes. Most of his clothing and equipment advice is male-oriented.

Great information source for First Timers!
I would say that this book can truly motivate those to get started on their first Triatholon with realistic goals in mind. The author gives realistic goals for those who are about to embark on a unfamilur journey into Triatholoning! Everywhere from Training to Technique to stoping for a Hamburger in the middle of a Triatholon. The author is so easy to relate to, and very entertaining! Can't wait to start my first Triatholon!

Miles Versus Minutes
While the training schedule is nice and well explained - the premise of the training schedule is based on minutes exercised, rather than distance. Had I known this prior to puchasing the book, I would not have bought it. A triathalon is based on completing a certain distance in 3 disciplines, not a set number of minutes. This is my first triathalon, so my expectations were not too high in terms of other content, but the minutes versus miles schedule is a big turn-off.

Additionally, I found the author providing a lot of anecdotal information about his races. I was looking for general information on how to prepare for my first race, not a story about how this guys gets ready too slow in the morning, so he got up before everyone else. The author also states up front that he is not a master in any of the 3 sports composing the triathalon, and references 3 other books to read. Had I known all of this ahead of time, I would have bought the other books he references instead.

Great Book for Beginners!
This book is an excellent read for the beginning triathlete. It takes you step by step through nutrition, basic aerobic fitness and finally into triathlon training. The only thing that I wish it contained were swimming and biking techniques. It explains which swimming stoke to use, but doesn't elaberate on the stoke itself. The author does, however, site many other authors on technique throughout this book that would be helpful. It seems that if the author added an extra chapter devoted to some basic biking/swimming techniques, this would be all the information you would need to get started.

ALL YOU NEED TO GET STARTED
The book delivers as promised!

When I finished the plan (taking you from SLOW running gradually increacing intensity over weeks and weeks), I was ready for my first Triathlon - The San Jose International - a 3/4 mile swim, 20 mile bike and a 6 mile run. No, I didn't win of course, but I finished! The process was so gradual, I KNEW I could do it every step of the way...

What a great feeling! I lost ove 30 pounds of fat in the process, too! This is the ONLY kind of training I have ever STUCK with!

I am about to do a HALF Ironman his weekend (TBF Half Ironman in Sacramento).

None of this ever would've happened if it weren't for me picking up this book...

Not Worth It!
I am a public administration student in a top ranked gradute program. This book was one course's required textbook and only because the editior, Anthony Kovner, was the instructor. While few students enjoyed the course, no one felt that this book is worth purchase. The only people that I would recommend this book to are foreign graduate students who have no working knowledge whatsoever about the US healthcare system. Otherwise, there are numerous books on the market that are cheaper and much more informative and intellectual.
