A good book with lots of great ideas for grandparents.
This book covers the gamut when it comes to finding fun things to do with children. Because my new grandson is 800 miles away, I especially liked all of the long-distance grandparenting ideas. I would recommend it to anyone, mothers and fathers as well as grandparents.

The "Bible" for Third Reich Edged Blade collectors
This overview of Third Reich Edged Weapons is a must for all collectors whether you have 1 or 100 in your collection. A very good overview of the different variations of dress daggers with clear and representative pictures of each. Also has chapters on swords, dress-bayonets, engravings, etc. The book also has a number of chapters that should be read by all collectors. Especially the one on counterfeit daggers. It is the sort of book you as a collector just can't put down and as a reference book it is worth its weight in gold. It also has a very useful listing on RZM numbers. Good thing it is card-cover because I can see wearing this book out if it was paper-back. The book could possibly have had more color photographs, and a more updated overview on values.

precise, easy to understand, eye opener
I am very impressed with this book. In particular, the descriptions of the many diagnoses and symptoms in depth explain what to the person experiencing such many times feel is unexplainable.

Just to know someone has the ability to understand in very simplistic terms gives one a sigh of relief. Ah ha! I am not unusual or alone--there are those who understand.

The author explains the processes of applying for Social Security disability--step-by-step.

Explains the whys and wherefores of this complex issue to those applying.

The Struggle for Student Rights: Tinker v. Des Moines and the 1960s
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (1997)
Author: John W. Johnson
Amazon base price: $35.00

A strong analysis based on numerous primary sources
Dr. Johnson has written a moving portrait of Tinker v. Des Moines, a major 1960s Supreme Court decision. The "Struggle" that he discusses deals with the right of non-violent expression while in the confines of a public school. The narrative is richly grounded in newspaper articles, interviews, and letters to and from the primary individuals. This makes the story extremely personal and enlightening. An in-depth look into the workings of the Supreme Court may be the book's most profound contribution. Taking a controversial stand in time of war is never easy. The Tinker case shows that the heart of our democracy rests with those who dare to point us in a different direction.

An excellent undergrad text on medicla virology
As a Medical School lecturer, running a virology course, I found this book to exactly what I had been waiting for. It is more fleshed-out and more virus-centred than the otherwise excellent introductions to infection and immunity by Mims and by Mitchinson but isn't as dry and encyclopedic as Fields (or Nathanson's big "Viral Pathogenesis"). It deals in a well-organized, clear and accessible way with the current scientific understanding of the interactions between virus and host at the molecular, cellular, systems and population levels, and provides sufficient clinical examples to be appealing to medical students and biologists alike. Clinical students will need, in addition, to have access to a more systematic text. My only gripe is that, as a duo-tone softback at a little over 200pp., the publishers have priced it too high for the mass market it deserves.

Two Thumbs Up!
Over the past several years I have read a number of books both for and against the theory of evolution. One of these books was in fact Darwin's original thesis, "The Origin of Species." Some of the others have been books that try to defeat Darwin by presenting a myriad of counter evidence which the author believes is proof that Darwin's theory is false. However, they usually end up being just as guilty as Darwin in making untested assumptions and sweeping generalizations. The end result is that these books aren't very convincing unless you read them having a completely bias view to begin with.

Phillip Johnson's book is entirely different. He makes the argument that simply showing tidbits of evidence which might be compatible with an evolving earth isn't the same as proving the fundamental tenants of the theory. Providing these tidbits of information is exactly what scientific naturalists have been doing all along. His purpose isn't to prove creationism to be true, but rather to show how flawed the "evidence" for evolution really is. Whatever your personal beliefs may be, you will view the lack of evidence for evolution in a different light after you read "Darwin on Trial." I give Johnson two thumbs up!

A dose of common sense that can't be refuted
Darwin on Trial was one of the pivotal books that launched the "Intelligent Design" movement. In truth, the book isn't brilliant - it doesn't need to be. Darwinism is fundamentally flawed, and simple logic (with a healthy dose of facts) shows how weak the theory really is.

Johnson's major contribution is demonstrating how Darwinism isn't a scientific theory, but a clever rhetorical trick that dresses up religious notions as science. If you think about it, Darwinism is essentially meaningless. Darwin says, "The species that survive are the species that are best fitted to survive." That statement is objectively meaningless. But philosophers have dressed up this statement in fancy verbage to make it sound like a meaningful proposition when it reality it tells us nothing about how life developed or why.

Johnson is not a Creationist (i.e., he doesn't believe that the world is 6,000 years or that dinosaurs roamed the decks of Noah's ark). The fact that establishment scientists feel the need to portray him as a Creationist shows how strong Johnson's argument really is.

This is an excellent starting point for deeper explorations into ID.

Using Evolutionist's Own Words
In this book, Phillip Johnson uses evolutionists' own words to show just how unsure of the theory of evolution they really are. And if evolutionists recognize the fatal flaws in their own theory, what of the rest of us? This is a stunning book, not because of its conclusions, but because of who draws them -- the very people who hold to the theory themselves. In their own words, if evolutionists could find another theory besides creation to explain the origin of life and its modification over the years, they'd abandon evolution in a millisecond. What is frightening is that it's only the people at the forefront of evolution who recognize its flaws. The way evolution is presented to the public is as if it's fact, and it's taught as fact, when the people who are in the position to know the most recognize publicly that it's built on sand. Anyone who believes that evolution is a widely accepted view in the scientific community needs to read this book.

VERY GOOD FOR WHAT THERE IS
THIS BOOK IS VERY GOOD FOR WHAT THERE IS OF IT. I LIKED THE PICTURES PROVIDED , A GOOD MIX OF B/W AND COLOUR AND THEY WEREN'T THE SAME OLD SAME OLD THAT HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED IN EVERY MAG GOING.

THE SYLE IS EASY TO READ AND FAIRLY WELL WRITTEN.

IN TERMS OF CONTENT THE BOOK WAS PRETTY BRIEF A SAMPLING OF EVERYTHING.

I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE MORE THOUGH AND THINK THAT THIS BOOK WOULD BE BETTER IF THE AUTHOUR HAD GONE FOR A 196 PAGE EFFORT.

WHAT COULD BE INCLUDED ARE: 1) A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE P40 (IE THE P 36) AND ITS FOLLOWONS AND OTHER LOOSERS (P 37, P 42, P 46) 2) A BRIEF HISTORY OF CURTISS WRIGHT AND DON BERLIN AS WELL AS SOME OF THE TROUBLES HE FACED WITH DESIGNING THE PLANE HE REALLY WANTED 3) MORE COMPARISIONS IE MERLIN VS ALLISON P 40 VS ZERO ME 109 ETC THIS WOULD BE DONE SHOWING TURING CIRCLES ALTITUTE RATINGS TATICS ETC. 4) DEFINITELY CUTAWAYS AND THREE VIEWS.

THERE HAVE BEEN GOOD MAG ARTICLES ON THIS STUFF IN WINGS/AIRPOWER AND BOOKS BY BILL GUNSTON. PUT THIER STUFF IN WITH JOHNSEN'S WORK AND YOU'VE GOT A WINNER.

YOU CAN MAKE THE SAME COMMENTS ON KAGA'S ZERO. LONG ON THE FATAL FLIGHT AND SHORT ON TECHNICAL AND DESIGN INFO ON THE PLANE. NEEDS TEST RESULTS, CONTRUCTION DETAILS ETC.

Warbird Low Tech Book
First the good: Lots of pictures, some diagrams right out of the repair manuals, covers lots of ground, nice size at aprox 8 1/2 x 11 in., good forward by Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier, some coverage of rare and never built variants. But for a book that is touted as a "fresh approach" using a more "technical" format, this book does not fulfill. Not so much in what it says or shows, but in what it leaves out. Not much of the Allison engine story, no technical details on wing loading or airfoil type, not even any specification charts. Other negatives include: More pictures than text, which leaves very little space in the 100 pages for the story. This forces the author to jump around, sometimes with each paragraph on a totally different subject. Only two aces are covered. All in all, it comes off as a low budget effort. If this book were to sell for (cheaper), and be described as an introduction and overview of the P-38, I would consider it a fair deal. But at twice the price, and sold as a technical approach, it is somewhat of a disapointment.
