So good!!
This is one of the best books I've ever read. Not only does it show the other side of the history of colonial Australia, it's also really funny. Calling the Chief Protector of the Aborigines an "upwardly mobile bricklayer" (as Mudrooroo does) says it all. :)

A must read for every Australian and everyone else!
A novel that provides a much needed Aboriginal perspective on Australian history - and does so with great originality, compassion and humour. I recommend it as a truly important and fascinating read. It provides a unique perspective on colonialism and indigenous resistance that is too often ignored by mainstream press and politics.

A brilliant and complex book
This is a truly amazing book, a view into a world that has been lost, an examination of a historical tragedy that is unfortunately not unique: the death of an entire people at the hands of another. It is a compassionate work of great spiritual power, and ultimately affirms the human imagination and the strength of the human soul. It is written in extraordinarily restrained language by a justly acclaimed poet.

The author, Mudrooroo, may not be well known to American readers, but is a leading (and somewhat controversial) literary figure in Australia. The novel was previously published several times in the United States as by Colin Johnson, the author's birth name. I completely agree with the assessment of Stephen Cobb that it is an extraordinary accomplishment.

What the medical profession doesn't want you to know!
A fasinating book that, unfortunately, needs to be updated, however, the statistics are startling. An excellent basis for the belief of a conspiracy against the food suppliment industry.A must read for those who are looking for a quick fix, or have family or friends that pop a pill for everything that ails them. A wonderful inside look at the bedroom relationship between drug manufacturers and the government.

almost....almost....almost good
againandagainandagain. it gets almost interesting. lovecraft's scientific story ending up with nothing much of a climax, Poe drowning in nautical technical information and fragmentary style. taine's is the most interesting one. first too little happens, then too much. could have been good, but is first too boring then too much in the overwhelming action-genre. glasby has good descriptions, but his story doesn't go anywhere. some of the other stories could have been good too. but always, something destroys. too boring, not going anywhere, lacks suspence. truly sad since many of the stories shows potential.

A Flawed Collection
An excellent collection of short to medium length stories, all dealing with Antarctic expeditions and what the adventurers found (but wish they hadn't).

I only gave this book three stars because of the horrible proof-reading. It appeared as if the original documents had been scanned in and run through OCR software without a human bothering to check the results. Some examples: in one story, Tekeli-li is printed T>k>li-li; in one story all instances of "he" are printed as "be".

Other than that, I would recommend this collection to anyone interested in weird fiction set in Antarctica.

A great collection of stories...
From the ends of the Earth come stories of adventure and really BAD things. Start off with a sonnet by Lovecraft himself, called, 'Antarktos', then on to the first course with 'The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket' by Edgar Allan Poe, with a follw-up of excerpts by Jules Vern's called 'The Sphinx of the Ice Fields'. This is followed by the not-so-well-known 'The Greatest Adventure' by John Taine. 'At The Mountains of Maddness' by H.P. Lovecraft is served next, the main course, followed by 'The Tomb of the Old Ones' by Colin Wilson. Arthur C. Clarke cooks up a fine story in 'At the Mountains of Murkiness' and what meal would be complete without 'The Thing From Another World' by John W. Campbell Jr.? We finish off our fine dining with 'The Brooding City' by John S. Glasby and 'The Dreaming City' by Roger Johnson. Full yet?

A good starting place
I found this book a good starting point for anyone interested in the field of neural networks. It covers everything from how the brain works to neural nets to consciousness to philosophy. It mentions a lot of neural net researchers names so that you can look futher into the field.

On the other hand, a book this thin can only cover these subjects in the same way, thinly. If you want to get more complete reading on how the brain works read someting by Daniel Dennett or Stephen Pinker. The philosophy in this book is covered much better by Talbot Taylor. Like I said, it is a starting place.

One last thing, the book is written in a sensationalistic style. The authors have writen a few times that 'this theory is not accepted by most researchers', but don't say why. It was much like reading a book by Von Daniken.

Good, enjoyable, but dated
Johnson and Brown mapped out the AI field of the 90's pretty well with this fun, readable, accurate book. Not heavy on math but still pulling no punches with its descriptions of neural circuits, _Cognizers_ is an optimistic look at the then-emerging field which is just now revolutionizing the way we use machines to solve problems. Well worth a read even at this late date.
