One of the best recent works of Systematic Theology.
Marguerite Shuster has continued the compilation, editing, and additions to the late Paul K. Jewett's second work of Systematic Theology and presents a work which presents clear, deep and well-researched discussion of the most important issues of our time, including gender, homosexuality, abortion and marriage.

Although not widely promoted by the publisher, this work is a jewel in a world full of imposters. Not only do Jewett and Shuster seriously consider the Biblical and moral implications for the debates concerning our sexuality and public policy, they present arguments which lift the discussion from the realm of hostile argument, to true theological reflection.

I read this book for spiritual reflection, to learn more about the issues surrounding the soundbites, and for a historical perspective on current debates. I think every pastor, professor and educated christian should read and digest this work. It is a travesty that not more copies have been sold. BUY IT!! READ IT! Send it to someone you love! You will be giving them a gift.

Well researched, but beware of his bias.
Dr. Jewett's book is something that anyone interested in infant baptism should read. This book examines the historical evolution of infant baptism, the scriptural arguments, and the theological arguments. It is highly informative and reads like a thesis. If you are at all interested in infant baptism, READ THIS BOOK.

The problem with this work is that Dr. Jewett makes conclusions where the evidence is not necessary conclusory. For instance, he analyzes history and concludes that infant baptism was not a practice of the apostles, yet such a concusion is just one INFERENCE that could be made after taking in all the evidence. However, it should be noted that such conclusions are probably the best that anyone could do in reaching a definitive answer to an age-old issue.

The reason for Dr. Jewett's approach is clearly that he has made his decision from the beginning. This book reads like he has already made his decision, and whatever it takes, he is GOING to push the round peg into a square hole.

However, I would highly recommend this book for two reasons. First, the sheer amount of research and information provided by the author is worth taking a look at. Second, his arguments will better help anyone to refine their thoughts, from either an experienced theologian or a novice.

My lone criticism of this book, other than I believe it reaches an incorrect conclusion, is that he should have tried to be more objective, and avoided any language that would indicate his view was already biased from the start.

Fascinating but Flawed
Jewett attempts to present a coherent theology of mankind as male and female. He makes some advances in his cause and presents some cogent and uncomfortably accurate points. However, the logic of his case occasionally falls short of making the case for a new Christian anthropology. Nevertheless, this book represents a positive step towards a reconceptualization of Christian anthropology. Although this new vision will probably not stand up under scrutiny, there are valid points that should not be ignored because of the flaws in the argument.
