the dream must end
you have found the Book. So now you must read it. If you're interested in Life. Human life. Primal theory isn't magic, except insofar as the laws of physics are magic. A sign of Primal theory's truth-value-usefulness is the intensity-depth of the insights resultant from its practice, or contemplation. Janov simply gets deeper into it than most. Deeper into everything. This isn't to say I believe what he believes. I happen to think Darwinism is totally wacky. How arrogant is it to think you know the origins of mind?

As youngsters, we have innate mental and biological needs. The need to be loved. The need for our mother not to drink alc while pregnant. And yes, love is not extra, something needed only by wimps. Love is the substance without which a child becomes neurotic, or split from his real needs, embracing symbolic needs, like the need for power, the need for too much food, the need to perform perverse sexual acts. Without love, Primal Pain is created, which may be too strong to be fully felt by a child, who represses this Pain and its meaning. Repressed truth doesn't disappear, it returns to exert physiologic pressure that haunts us, gives us allergies, headaches, addictions, disease. The only escape from Pain is to feel it, to become conscious, to wake up to our sickness, and become our real selves, become ex-neurotic.

I tend to believe that reading ThePrimalScream is almost as good as getting the therapy. But what do I know--I've been without a partner for a decade. Brains are computers, and computers do wierd things sometimes.

How your past affects your life and how to heal.
This book is a great book. It is everything that you might think it is. Tackling - how people deal with pain, What is Pain (to human organisms), and how to heal from Pain. While at first it may seem like a mystical trance-like therapy, its not. The first 50 pages (or so) deal with the theory behind Primal Therapy. It defines primal Pain, and discusses how it affects our life, day to day. This part is somewhat unsupported. Dr. Janov leaves the evidence to support his theory for the rest of the book. With patient journals and case histories, the rest of the book tackles topics including sexuality, fear, hope, and anger. It is the rest of the book, through the patient journals and case histories, that make the book real. (and easy to read).

A work of genius in the field of psychology
An incredible breakthrough in treatment and prevention of neurosis. One of the most important books of the twentieth century. We must never forget it.

Groundbreaking and profound.
Arthur Janov is a brilliant man. He is without doubt the greatest psychologist since Sigmund Freud, and his discoveries are of equal, if not greater, value. This book might well be ahead of it's time, because the material Janov tries to cover is both complex and at the very forefront of psychology. The complexity of his material has resulted in criticism and misunderstanding of his work, which is a shame, because his discoveries are of profound importance to the future well-being of the human species.

This book is a complete update and rewrite of a subject Janov first visited over thirty years ago, when the original book, "The Primal Scream", was published. In "The New Primal Scream", Janov explains as clearly and eloquently as his subject allows how repression of early trauma is the cause of innumerable physical and psychological illness, and how reliving (relieving) the repressed trauma can heal both body and mind.

The book is important not only because it provides a way to heal people suffering from mental disorders of all kinds. But also because it explains how neglect, lack of love, and modern birth practice is the root cause behind anxiety, depression, drug use, compulsive behavior, and more. In an age where millions of people are on antidepressives, and more and more children get diagnosed with ADD and ADHD, this book finally answers the questions to what causes these disorders, and how to avoid them.

The reader of this book might at first disbelieve the claims Janov makes, or the quotes from some of his many patients, but I can assure you: his claims are true, and verifiable. I can personally attest to the existence of a birth trauma, that reliving birth is possible, and that the sheer amount of pain that can be stored inside your body defies description.

The book is thoughtfully laid out and well written, and does a good job covering the complex subject material. The material it covers is profound, and potentially has the power to change your life in ways you would never dream possible.

a very nice version of things
when one first reads janov, one gets to see things that seem to have always been waiting in one's unconscious, but never actualized in conscious form. This is a book of feeling, different from his other books, yet directed by the same fulfillment-seeking author's sensibility. To Janov, access to consciousness means having the ability to know images and pain at once. Pain is Janov's most infinite theme, because it is our problem. He argues for its value. It should be listened to, because it is as much us as our pleasure is. He wants only for us to grow more critical and artistic, to realize our why's and what's and how's. He is as great in psychology as DeLillo is great in fiction. One may not yet want to hear his lines, but one may often need to.

what is neurosis
is neurosis a part of the machine of human organisation; is it the avoidable consequence of parenting; do we have to spoil our children to avoid neurosis thus inflicting their selfishness on others and generating more neurosis in those others and their offspring.
If you don't care and just want to understand yourself this book may help more than others ...And at [money] dollars its cheap at the price but the hard cover ...

The Hidden Truth Speaks
Prisoners of Pain is a great book. It is science written from the heart. It explains psychology on a deep level, including the physiological, the emotional and the thinking brains. Most important though, it PROVES neurosis (and psychosis) comes out of early pain. It also shows how neurosis can be reversed, which you rarely hear in any other therapy. By reading the book one comes to realise how stupid some of the explanations for neurosis (and its treatment) are in other fields of psychology, and in the general population. Janov writes the full truth I find, whilst other authors in the field tend to deal in half truths. It is a stunning book, almost unbelievable, but it is true. It is important we all know about how crippling emotional pain can be prevented, for the next generation of children. I believe Janov is the best source by far, for such exacting information. Its exciting stuff, please read it and recommend it to others, especially young fertile couples!

Enjoy.

Important, crucial evidence for the effects of pain
This is an important book to prevent pain in children. Janov proves that early pain has lifelong crippling effects. Physical pain and anoxia at birth is stored and continues to cloud our experience, he has found, emotional pain later too. He has found a way to reexperience such pain, and reverse its effects. Through observing many patients resolve problems, he was able to extract precisely what it is a neonate, baby, toddler and child need. It is crucial imformation for everyone, not just psychologists.

Convincing exponent of Primal Therapy with few followers?
Arthur Janov's book is well written, convincing and logical although if you have read his other books from 'Primal Scream' onwards the message is very much the same: that feeling can make life easier & longer. The message is also a rather lone one though after so many years; I would like to see other books on the subject by other authors

Janov is completely right, again!
This is an incredible book, the research results are fascinating. Again and again, since 1967 Janov has consistentently demonstrated cure of neurosis (and even psychosis) by the resolution of Primal Pain. It can be the only logical way to do psychotherapy now, but still it is ignored, perhaps because we all naturally want to avoid pain. To me this is where the new science is, this is where we should put our research efforts and where we should fund therapist training. Once one understands the importance of Janov's unmistakable discoveries, it truely is mindblowing that he has been ignored. The truth is revolutionary, and that may explain the resistance. It is hard to understand why Janov's name and ideas are not more widely discussed in the wide range of psychological literature. Quite simply, he is right, and it is important because it can save the next generation of crippling emotional and physical pain. Please read it and recommend it to others.

Read it and Weep!
Nearly 30 years after writing _The Primal Scream_, Janov is still trying valiantly to educate us about neurosis and its cure. In this, his most recent book, he continues to teach us how repressed feelings act as endogenous poison eating away at our thoughts, words and deeds. He also explains that we evolved with an innate healing mechanism that can cure the neurosis resulting from such repression. Unfortunately, Janov's Primal Therapy is no longer so popular, but it remains probably the most well-researched and effective psychotherapeutic modality in history. Read this and every out-of-print book of Janov's you can get your hands on if you're interested in a natural alternative to the prescription drug addiction that currently passes for effective treatment of mental illness.

What the world should know
In just the first section of the book, Dr. Janov says so much of what needs to be said. As a Primal patient, I wish the world would heed what is in this book. He is the only professional to effectively unite the disciplines of psychology with the neurological sciences. If one is divorced from the other, the theory will be incomplete and any treatment will fail. Dr. Janov explains more about the nervous system than in his previous books. He also empahsizes how pre-natal experience affects a person's state of being, including his or her state of feeling, thought and behavior. He says what we as patients need the world to hear:"Feelings are not businesses to be 'managed.' They are meant to be felt.""We need access to our feelings to lead an intelligent life.""Feeling is what makes us human."Dr. Janov again assures us that to delve into the deepest levels of conciousness is not at all scary, but that it is necessary to connect to, release and resolve old imprinted pain. As a Primal person, I have enjoyed the benefits of doing this and look forward to delving ever deeper.

You may agree or disagree but you'll be effected
"A hug or a kiss raises dopamine levels," says Dr. Janov, and on he goes blending psychology and neuro-science. Whether or not you "believe" in primal scream, so much of what he writes about just rings true to common sense. One reason what he writes is hard to take, I think, is that some things about birthing are so beyond our control, even if we're a caring parent, e.g., if you have to have a baby by c-section, you have to. But there's still all the time of infancy and onward -- "Touching a child allows for greater density of synapses in the developing brain," he writes, "the more dense the synapses the more information the brain can handle." Whether you agree with what he says, or you don't, he makes his point (and it's extremely well annotated) and you won't walk away untouched. Read the chapter called "The Gate-Control Theory." Wow!

An emminently valuable book
In this book,Dr.Janov shows what love and -contrarily- lack of love means in the different phases (womblife, birth, infancy) of our early lives.
The experiences of our early lives affect our brains in a multi-
ple manner, and if these experiences are traumatic they will remain, with all their original power,in the subcortical networks
of our brains and determine the quality of our adult lives.

Janov offers a therapy enabling suffering people to return to the beginnings of their lives and resolve those early and deeply hidden pain which is responsible for a wide spectrum of symptoms
and will finally shorten life.
It is not easy to get there. So it is important to be put on the right track. And it is not easy to go through these traumata. So it is important to have somebody standing by us during the difficult phases of this process.
When the levels of consciousness (page 106 in this book) can com-
municate with each other without interference (see page 231 "The
Gate-Control Theory") we come to be feeling creatures again.

After all it is a completely natural process. We help the brain (which will find its own rhythm)get rid of something having in-
vaded like an alien force and keeping hidden. It is an ancient,
evolutionary phenomenon (see THE NEW PRIMAL SCREAM by Dr.Janov,
page 25,"The Nature of Emotional memory")

THE BIOLOGY OF LOVE comprises a fullness of technical informa-
tion.Janov presents a lot of material from scientific research
which substantiates his theory. The weight of evidence is over-
whelming. The paradigm of primal theory, the concept of the early
imprint and its lasting effects, stands as firmly as a rock.
Janov`s antagonists in the field of psychology having so far pre-
vented primal theory from being on offer in the curricula of most
universities will have increasing difficulties in ignoring or
discrediting this new paradigm.
HOW TO DISCREDIT A PHENOMENON THAT HAS ACCOMPANIED AND INFLU-
ENCED HUMAN EVOLUTION FOR MILLIONS OF YEARS ??? A scientist who
has lost the connection to his personal (ontogenetic) history ,
can no longer recognize the inner truths of our conditio humana.

Having understood the message of this book, we are able to spare
the following generations a tremendous lot of pain.As hard as it may be,we must understand now that womblife, birth and infancy are
the most crucial phases of our lives. In these phases,we are most
vulnerable and may be damaged worst of all.It is not all the same
if a pregnant woman is smoking and drinking or if she is not.It
is not all the same whether birth happens on conditions of anesthesia or not.
Janov says that heavy lack of oxygen (anoxia) is a central element of most birth traumata he has observed in his therapeutic
practice. On page 253 in his book he provides an exellent descrip-
tion and explanation of what happens to the mother and the baby
in the drugged birth. In the western world, the great majority of all birth processes goes under such circumstances. The conse-
quences for the psychophysical state of health of the adult pop-
ulation are anything but positive.
THE WAY WE GIVE BIRTH TO OUR CHILDREN IS THE WAY WE PERPETUATE
NEUROSIS TO THE END OF TIME !
I wonder whether the structures and institutions of neurotic
societies may be changed in the foreseeable future. However,I know
for sure that we can create microcosms making life a precious good. The smallest and yet most unsheakable of these microcosms
is our own deeply feeling self.
I have experienced the symptom-reducing,life-saving benefits of
primal therapy.A long, long journey along the chain of pain into
the deepest deposits of my history is coming to an end.I`m look-
ing forward to an entirely new consciousness and quality of life.

Janov`s book is well written like all of his former books. As a
lay person,I recommend it without reservation.

Janov has written better...
This is the latest book regarding Primal Therapy. Nothing new here that was not included in "Primal Scream" or "New Primal Scream." This book is less passionate than his others. Still, not bad.

Very moving
Art's thoughts on repression clarify the concept quite a bit. Mainstream psychology cannot ignore his books and works yet they do. He basically destroys the establishment. It seems they spend much of their time navigating around Janov's troubling theories. Role of endorphins illuminated.

I have to say some special words about this book !
I'm a German and have experience with a lot of difference psycotherapy methods. I got in contact with "Primal Therapy" three years ago. After reading Dr. Arthur Janov book and watching audio material, I started a special research program with "Primal Thearapy" with people. I asked them about their birth and their way of life. After that I travelled to different country in the world to study the different societies and how they handle their pain. After Erik Hoffmann's discovery "Brainmapping", I started to go on reaserching this. The intrest of "PRIMAL THERAPY" is in working with body and mind. This means, there is only one body. When I finish studying medicine, I will go on the reaserch program with the immune system and maybe the study: AIDS and "PRIMAL THEARAPY" or other new age illnesses. Also, Primal Therapy and people who became very old. How do they handle with pain? All that I can say about Janov is that he is an absolutely perfect scientist like EINSTEIN. But we have to go on with his research work. This means the EVOLUTION never stops in this world. I will go on studying PRIMAL THERAPY and I think nobody can stop me. Information about Primal Therapy in: Enlish, Deutsch, Espanol, Italia, France... With every kind of illness, I would recommend to undergo PRIMAL THERAPY!!! YOU CAN BE SURE THAT IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE MORE THAN PLASTIC SURGERY CAN CHANGE YOUR BODY !!! Joerg Mayer

Some words to this book
I think the "Old" Primal Scream is one of the world wonder. But... It is already to old. To know more about Primal Therapy, you have to read Arthur Janov's new book:The new primal screem. The Primal Screen is only the begining of a big research program! I think the Primal Therapy will become more famous in the next years. The reasen is the work of Arthur Janov and Erik Hoffman abour Brainmapping. Brainmapping will be a very good diagnostic instrument. We already use it in some Primal Centers in Germany. If you like to read my opinion to the "NEW PRIMAL SCREAM", please click on this book. Vayase a buscar un traductor para leer mi opinion. Joerg Mayer

An innovative and path-breaking approach to psychology
Janov writes a compelling and extremely readable account of the new paradigm in psychology that he innovated, Primal Therapy. This is one of the seminal works in Psychology; it is very important and I highly recommend it.
