Kateryn Parr: The Making of a Queen (Women and Gender in Early Modern England, 1500-1750)

A Great Book
This is a great book. It should be a model of how historians approach the period. It is full of insightful detail such a quotes, vignettes and illustrations that illustrate Parr's life and her impact on society. The book is wonderful in striking a balance between the author's reflections on Parr's life, framing the historical times to give context and historical detail to support her conclusions.

So many books on the women of the English Renaissance seem to be written by little old ladies in Tropesshire, who rattle on about Virgin Queens, duty and stiff upper lips, that sort of tripe. The "see no evil, hear no evil, write no evil" school of history. Susan James's book is a refreshing departure from all that. I can only hope she takes on Elizabeth I as a subject after this book. A really modern, complete book on Elizabeth that has some semblance to historical reality has yet to be printed.

One, small detail, Susan James believe that Parr's daughter, Mary Seymour died before the age of two. She did not. She was placed in the home of another noble family. If she emails me, pfstreitz@aol.com, I'll tell her where Mary went.

The Making of a Queen
This book has everything in it, from pillage and mayhem, royal murders, romance, sex and violence. And besides that, you're learning information never before published about the Tudor royal family. I thought Kateryn Parr was just a weepy widow who married a king and instead she turns out to be Scarlett O'Hara. What a surprise! A strong and well-presented book. Totally fascinating!

Dear Munificent Friends: Henry James's Letters to Four Women

At last a very readable Henry James book
Having read and attempted to comprehend several James novels, it was with some foreboding that I opened "Dear Munificent Friends". I was pleasantly surprised by the accessiblity of James's most prolific body of writing, his letters. The editor has carefully selected about 150 of James's previously unpublished letters written to four of his close women friends spanning a fifty year peroid---from an estimated ten thousand existing letters. These four friends were very influential in the arts, science and politics of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The letters reveal a side of James that is not commonly perceived: he was a witty, compasionate gossip. The letters are a wonderful, very well written record of the social, political and scientific thinking of the times. Did your mother ever tell you that you should chew your food 100 times? James followed this prescription and wore out his teeth prematurely. I was gripped by his narrative descriptions of major events of his time such as the funeral of Queen Victoria and the beginning of World War I. I recomnend this book to anyone who has an interest in James and the remarkable period in which he lived

Perfect Textbook and Website
I have been teaching Graphic Design for many years and have found that Designing with Type is the perfect textbook. Now with the addition of the website...and its numerous links to design projects from schools around the world, as well as suggestions for books, magazines, organizations, and other web sites, it is a truly unique and invaluable tool for both teachers and students.

New Web Site Too
I have used this book both as a student and now as an instructor of typography and find it to be one of the most valuable resources on the subject. There is also a free new web site that supplements the book. I have found that students benefit greatly from using the book along with the website. I would strongly recommend checking out: ...

Great book
I use this book in a fundamentals class. It has solid exercises and simple, comprehensive info on typography.

James Rosenquist's Really Big Pictures
This book has beautiful fold out pictures of James Rosenquist's most famous paintings. There are also aticles that give a little background into each painting as well as an interview with the artist at the end. This is a good book to get an introduction to James Rosenquist. However, if you really want to delve into his art I would chose a more all inclusive book that traces his work from beginning to end.

A beautiful review of neuroscience.
To me as bibliophiliac and a cognitive psychologist interested in neurobiology, this is the textbook of choice and an object of desire. It is very up-to-date and well-written. Although some people have detected some lack of coherence in this work, I find it refreshing that the sections recognizably come from different research teams with somewhat different points of emphasis, but without anyone pushing his own scientific interests on the expense of those of the readers. This also guarantees that it is not only an accumulation of facts but has also interesting theoretical discussions by leading researchers. It is optimal for readers having at least some laypeople knowledge about biology, medicine, or neuroscience, and just want to know more (possibly everything), or who require a thorough and citable review of a certain topic. Readers completely new to the field may find it difficult to pick out the information suited for a beginner level - a less voluminous book would be more helpful for them. I would rather not recommend it for undergraduates courses. I would also prefer a somewhat stronger emphasis on cognitive neuroscience - after all, a few hundred pages more would do no harm...!

Truly Fundamental!
I was rather lucky to take my chances and go-for-a-buy for this title instead of the much more cited "Kandel-Fourth Edition"... The book is really awesome, well-written and edited, with many good first-time-seen illustrations. It spans the whole field of contemporary Neuroscience (from biochemical to cognitive and clinical) with extreme efficacy and reference. The authors did a great job integrating the contents of each section with clarifying examples and extensive references, making it ideal even for new-comers. As a medical student with research interests in this vast field, I was very pleased with my decision to buy this textbook.

Serious in-depth coverage of important field
This book is a veritable tour de force from leading researchers in the area of neuroscience. It is comprehensive in scope going from modern molecular and cellular neuroscience to cognitive and behavioral neuroscience. Includes strong sections on developmental neuroscience, sensory and motor neuroscience, and regulatory systems. The book is extremely well and attractively produced; the graphics are superb. Exceptional value for money. It has been written by leading scholars involved in teaching neuroscience at the graduate level (although it may be suited to advanced undergraduates and academic medical students). Definitely the leading book in the area; required reading for professional neuroscientists and academic clinicians.
