Completely Wonderful
I see that the other reviewers have pretty much said all there needs to be said about this book and I doubt I will say anything new here. All I want to emphasize it that this is truly THE book to get for a quick, easy, complete understanding of Alfred Hitchcock's movies. I have read other, longer, deeper books on his films which were very good, yet this one is nice when you are new to Hitchcock or just do not have the time to devote to much reading. These authors have a good sense of humor as well, and it always is fun to read a book where you can get a few laughs. They have some good trivia in the book, spotlights on certain Hitchcock actors,a few pages of pictures showing some poster art and movie stills, and they tell you where to find Hitch in the movies where he had cameo appearances. Hitchcock's movies are among my favorites, and this book is among my favorites about them. Get it and read it, you won't be disappointed.

I am impressed :)
After having read this book from stem to stern I would recommend it to new Hitchcock fans and more experienced fans alike. For the new fan it offers a clear synopsis of each film as well as offering many interesting points to look for. For the more experienced it makes for a convenient "turn to" source so as to better avoid the mountains of heavy, sometimes overly self satisfied observations that many resources tend to become, thereby saving wading through chapter upon chapter in order to reach simple facts.

I must respect the authors for their understanding that an enjoyment of film does not require a degree. I always commend a person for having the ability to transfer complicated observations in the simplest of English without the use of parables and without patronizing tones. Paul Condon and Jim Sangster have managed just that and not without the occasional bit of side splitting humour. Even if you are not watching the films in question it is more than a worthy read. That said, it may help to be familiar with some English terms such as "send up" as the average American does not know what it means to send something up so may be left wondering.

However, with the authors sardonic senses of humour being clear I would have liked to have seen further elaboration of the "goofs" section. There are so many Hitchcock bloopers worthy of a mention. I am certain it was a deliberate omission (perhaps for the next book) but nonetheless I was left wishing that they had made note of the obvious ones if only to give the new viewer that added bit of fun and sport.

Despite taking umbrage at the use of the phrase "just a smathering of dull brunettes" ahum, I would gladly purchase any other offerings from either or both authors and very much look forward to a second volume of "Complete Hitchcock," contradiction that it may be. Hopefully with an eye to the slip ups and perhaps more production details (locations, circumstances, first hand anecdotes, etc.) If that isn't a hint to get writing I don't know what is : )

In short I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would not only recommend it but have already bought several other copies for friends and family. Enjoy.

Complete in every way
As a novice Hitchcock fan, I find this book extremely informative. It gives a good summary of all of Hitchcock's movies as well as a good analysis of the films. It also includes where Hitchcock can be spotted in the movies and little tidbits on the actors and actresses who were casted in his movies as well as behind the scenes information. I would recommend this book for those who are starting to discover Hitchcock.

Harry McCreedy

Amazing mastery of the English language.
Nothing beats James Jeffery Paul's uncanny mastery of the English language. Harry McCreedy is depicted as a coy man with a "steel rod" shoved inside of him who meets the girl of his dreams and becomes, in many ways, a new man. I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in reading an entirely new kind of novel. Sit back and enjoy Paul's nigh-poetic prose.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS TAKEN TO EXTREMES
This novel is a cautionary tale about a culture gone mad. One in which we judge people by the color of their skin-in this case the darker the better. When you read it expect to get angry, because you will be. Expect to cry, because you will.

UNFORGETABLE STORYLINE!
Is there any higher achievement by an author than to imbue their story with whatever qualities etch it indelibly upon the reader's memory? This quality is posessed by Paul. This novel shines among such literary novels as have seen the press this year. Do not allow it to pass without reading it.

Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: The Definitive Unabridged Edition Based on the Original French Texts

fantastic!
My (10 year old) daughter got interested in '20,000 leagues' after reading the "Wishbone" version (go ahead and laugh). I went searching for the real thing to read with her, and came across this edition. With all of the missing content recovered, plus the annotations to fill in all sorts of additional information, the result is fascinating for adult readers. If you read the usual (butchered) version as a kid, you really owe yourself this one. All of the critiques of Verne over the years that tried to belittle his knowledge of science turn out to have been based on translations that whacked out what Verne really said -- they thought it was too dry and boring. Reading what he really said, plus the extensive footnotes that describe the state of knowledge at the time, make Verne's brilliance tripling astonishing. Just consider that he wrote about the Nautilus at a time when the Hunley was the state of the art!

The True Verne
One of the great problems with Jules Verne is that in the English speaking world he is relagated to the category of "Boys' Own Adventures". On the Continent, however, he is considered a brilliant social commentator, and biting satirist, AND a man who predicted the future. This is a volume that helps set matters to the right.

If you know of "20,000 Leagues" already, you will find little different at first. The plot is still the plot. Nemo is still Nemo, Prof. Aronnax is still pompous and fascinated by the Nautilus and Ned Land....

Ned Land is a flaming socialist.

This is one of the major shifts between the original French and the "cleaned up" English editions. Most of the science of the day was pulled out as a "dull read" and all the Socialism, anti-English remarks, and other commentaries of a "questionable nature" were excised. We Americans have unfortunately been until only very recently only able to find these poor early translations, or translations based on these poor translations. There is much more to Verne than submarines and diving suits. He is a man with a vision of his times, both scientific and political, and his books underline this strongly.

English readers, demand your Verne well-translated! Do not allow yourself to be fobbed off with bowlderized versions! To be able to read as he wrote himself (well, in English, for those of us who don't read French...) is a greater pleasure than merely an amusing old science-fiction story from the 19th century. Reading this book, as Verne /meant/ it to be read, if a pleasure, but also a struggle to understand ourselves and our relationship to the oceans themselves.

OUTSTANDING ! A perfect book for you or for your child.
The best translation in English. Satisfies the intellect and imagination. Translated to show the truly beautiful qualities of Verne's writing that no other version can equal. The adventure comes alive by not omitting the breadth and depth of Verne's aesthetic ability originally entrenched within this masterpiece.

An amazing adventure!
"The Rosetta Stone of God" is not your typical "how I found God" story. Through a combination of luck, grace, discipline, trust and effort, the author pieces together 12 startling "aspects" of "God". Each aspect is expanded upon in its own chapter and then tied together beautifully at the end in a handy "Seeker's Checklist". He cites his own experiences as well as dreams, coincidences and his research of various texts and finds a cohesive thread running through all of them. His effort, perservance and ingenuity I found very inspiring. Also, the straightforward presentation eschews fluffy, cosmic, mumbo jumbo for clarity, simplicity and even logic. It was worth several reads to me.

Also recommended:"The Secret Language of Waking Dreams" by Mike Avery; "35 Golden Keys to Who You Are & Why You're Here" by Linda Anderson; "Autobiography of a Modern Prophet", "The Living Word: Book 2" and "A Modern Prophet" all 3 by Harold Klemp.

Recognizing a miracle
The Rosetta Stone of God is exactly the book my heart was seeking on these shelves. I ran across the most amazing and healing quote on pg.230....

"Man confuses self-knowledge with the knowledge of his conscious ego-personality," say the Shariyat." One who has any ego-consciousness at all takes it for granted that he knows himself. But the ego knows only its own contents, not the psychic self and its contents. Man measures his self-knowledge by what the average person in his social environment knows of himself, not the real spiritual facts which are for the most part hidden from him."

This quote simply woke up my heart center! :-) What an amazing book James Davis has shared with us. :-)

A CALL TO ADVENTURE!
While working for a forest protection agency as part of a fire-fighting crew, the author fell through a wall of branches and found himself teetering on the end of a log as it jutted out over the edge of a cliff. Some thirty feet below are jagged boulders. Pitching forward and falling, he is saved by the firm hand of an unseen loving presence that pushes him back to safety and solid ground. So begins the first of six miracles experienced by James Davis. He calls thems gifts intended to open a different window to heaven. The book details a natural progression of insights drawn from his personal experiences, dreams, and synchronicities of a mysterious key which keeps appearing at various intervals in his path. The Egyptian Rosetta Stone is a historical key which unlocked writings of a lost civilization. Mr Davis' "Rosetta Stone of God" similarly unlocks "treasures from the vaults of heaven" by reminding us of our own gifts. The book is a call to spiritual adventure, a nudge to be more alert and aware of the synchroncities, turning points and miracles in our own lives. If you like reading " Celestine Prophecy", or books by Deepak Chopkra, James Van Praagh, Dr. Michael Weiss, Joan Grant, or Dr Michael Newton, you will appreciate this author's work. Mr Davis invites readers to document your own personal experiences: keep daily notes- a living travelog of your life, including the discoveries that are special to just you. I like this book. It is clear, timely, and highlights alternative choices, options for facing todays current challenges and issues. Highly recommended for those seriously interested in spiritual knowledge and spiritual adventure.

may even get you to tackle the Raj Quartet
If, like me, you've been meaning to read The Raj Quartet, but have been daunted by it's gargantuan bulk, this shorter sequel offers an ideal entree to Paul Scott's Anglo-Indian world. Here he takes what I understand are two very minor characters from the quartet, Colonel Tusker Smalley and his long-suffering wife Lucy, and makes their story the centerpiece of a sweetly elegiac comic novel.

The year is 1972 and the Smalleys have stayed on in Pankot, India even after Independence in 1947, less out of love of the country or it's people, than out of financial need and sheer spite on Tusker's part. Where the upper class Brits were able to just scamper home, the Smalleys represent the folk of the middle class, who felt that they had invested something in the colony and now deserved to get something out of it. As he explains to Lucy:

I know for years you've thought I was a damn' fool to have stayed on, but I was forty-six when Independence came, which is bloody early in life for a man to retire but too old to start afresh somewhere you don't know. I didn't fancy my chances back home, at that age, and I knew the pension would go further in India than in England. I still think we were right to stay on, though I don't think of it any longer as staying on , but just as hanging on, which people of our age and upbringing and limited talents, people who have never been really poor but never had any real money, never inherited money, never made real money, have to do, wherever they happen to be, when they can't work anymore. I'm happier hanging on in India, not for India as India but because I just can't merely think of it as a place where I drew my pay for 25 years of my working life, which is a hell of a long time anyway, though by rights it should have been longer.

But now, with Tusker's health in decline, Lucy has increasing concerns about her own future. As is, they have led a pretty precarious existence for the past 15 years, having been reduced to living in a hotel, the new owner of which is a ghastly Indian woman, who married the manager, Mr. Bhoolabhoy, one of Tusker's few remaining friends. The author etches a finely detailed portrait of his characters and in particular of the difficult marriage of the Smalleys. Tusker is an irascible curmudgeon straight out of an old British barracks. Lucy has been disappointed that their relationship did not fulfill her romantic ideals. These strains are exacerbated by the daily indignities they must now suffer as the last seedy remnants of the departed British Empire, looked down upon by the very natives they once lorded it over. In the final scenes of the novel, two letters are written which will change these peoples' lives, for better and for worse.

This is a very funny and ultimately a deeply moving story. The Smalleys are a couple the reader won't soon forget. I liked it so much, I think I may finally heft that colossal Quartet off of the shelf and give it a go.

GRADE: A-

Lovely, funny, and poignant
I would not rank this lovely novel with the Raj Quartet in power or scope, but it is certainly a delightful read. It is tragi-comic... comic in the characters Scott presents to us; tragic (or at least sad) in its portrayal of a marriage coming to its natural end.

superb
Out of all his novels, including those set in India, this is his greatest work. Funny, wonderfully written, and sometimes disturbing, this novel is truly brilliant.

A wonderful resource of information!
It is rare for me to read a book that in seemingly every page
is an "a-ha" realization...the proverbial "lightbulb effect". I would guess that those who have been trying to cope with or
understand the bizarre behaviors of their borderline loved one will have a similar reaction in reading this book. I commend the authors for their diligent research into BPD and their accurate assessment of this serious disorder.
In my previous relationship, I was sure that everything would

eventually be OK as long as I loved her enough and continued to be patient with her. I knew she was suffering
inside but I didn't know why. Since then, with the help of this
book and others, I have learned a great deal about this debilitating condition. I am grateful to the authors for this understanding of BPD for with understanding comes
added COMPASSION and love for this troubled person.
In my case, I finally began to realize that nobody can "make"
another person happy if that person is not happy inside, and does not begin to take responsibility for their own abnormal thinking and actions. Hopefully,
by the invaluable knowledge presented in this book and by
working together as a loving team, you will have a happier outcome than I.....I hope so.
In closing, I would like to offer what I believe could possibly be the
only real hope for borderlines for it deals directly at the
core of BPD- their dysfunctional thinking (thoughts).
I believe that borderlines can change the way they think and
thereby reduce or eliminate their destructive behaviors. I would encourage you to at least investigate this profound
possibility by reading, "You Can Be Happy No Matter What," and, "The Wisdom Within", and further study the life-changing principles and concepts of "Health Realization" on the web.
I wish you the best!

Thankyou!
This book is an absolute life-saver when dealing with the BP in your life, and how you interact with them. I never realised how completely enraged my BP got me because it was all piling up into problems elsewhere, until doing some of the exercises in here. Now I know where my buttons are, and when my BP is trying to hit them, and different ways that I can deal with this without making the situation worse in the long run. This book is a must for anyone living with a BP, whatever the age.

-Daughter of a BP (18)

How to Reclaim Sanity in Your Life
A tremendous resouce for anyone involved with borderline or other disorders. I can't say enough about this book. It will change your life in ways you never thought possible. I was able to regain my dignity, self esteem and take steps to put me in control of a situation I thought hopeless. Both books, Stop Walking on Eggshells and the Workbook are at the top of the list of the books we recommend at MSN Psychopath forum. There should be a 10-star rating for this one!!

Excellent Moth Guide
I have been looking for a guide like this for years. This book shows great pictures of all the bigger moths of North America including their caterpillars. Loaded with maps and drawings of the cocoons this book is a must have. Don't let the price scare you away.

The most comprehensive book to date on N.A Saturniidae!
Very impressive coverage on the Wilk Silk Moths of Noth America. Most known species are shown in exellent photographs, some in the larval stages also. Good range maps and detailed text make this the laymans best friend when exploring and learning about the habitats and life histories of some of our most magnificent moth species. The best book I've seen on the subject period!

Impressive details of each moth's life cycle. Easy to read.
For each moth there is a color picture of last instar caterpillar and one or more pictures of the moth. There is also a range map and detailed descriptions of each stage of the life cycle with notes on rearing.
This is a well-written, well-researched, easy to read book. I would recommend it to anyone interested in these largest and showiest of the U.S. moths.

Very good but lacking in the training part.
Very good but lacking in the training part. The book refers to other training books but those books talk about Dogs in general not about big dogs with traits like digging, barking, roaming, etc. Other than that the book is a good buy for all interested in buying a pyr. or those who have pyrs already. I recommend it.

great
This book is wonderful! If you are thinking about sharing your life with a walking hairball... i highly recommend it. Very informative. If you can get your hands on a copy, it's well worth the money.

The Great Pyr Bible
I have owned this book for seven years, and it was what sold me on buying a Great Pyrenees. A Great Pyrenees is a wonderful breed, but not for everyone. Please read this book before buying a Great Pyrenees. I have read this book multiple times, for it is the "Great Pyrenees bible". Other Great Pyrenees books were of no value to me. Paul Strang's book has helped me better understand my big, walking "snowdrift".

Some Cautions
Dunn's book has received high praise. His scholarship and attention to detail are evident. Some, however, have called into question his advocacy of the so-called New Persepctive on Paul as being flawed in its presentation of Luther's understanding of Judaism. Read it, but read it with a critical eye.

Excellent summary of Pauline theology
Do not let the size of this volume intimidate you. Dunn's work is extensive, and yet friendly to the newer Bible student and the experienced scholar alike. Rather than a commentary of all the letters, Dunn has painstakenly reconstructed for us the mind of the "renegade" rabbi from Tarsus by logically compliling the various topics Paul dealt with.

One small point of interest I personally was glad to see was his explaination of the "corporate" church and sheds light on the overly debated predestination issues of the Calvinist and Arminians, which I think both camps miss the whole point of what "election" means. But Mr. Dunn does not spend a lot of time arguing with other scholars, which is also refreshing.

I plan on buying more of his work based on this book.

A great guide to understanding Paul's theology
This is a wonderful summary of Paul's theology written by a prominent New Testament scholar. I have been waiting for a recent book on Paul's theology that combines solid content with readability and clarity. I finally found it in this book! Dunn embraces the "new perspective" on Pauline studies on the gospel and the law. Nevertheless, a traditionalist would still find Dunn's views thought-provoking. I also like this book because it is so user-friendly and well-organized. Dunn organizes each chapter by topics (e.g. "God and humankind," "the gospel of Christ," " the process of salvation," etc.) and it is easy to follow. I highly recommend this book to layreaders, serious students, and scholars alike. It is a must for those who wish to read and understand more about Pauline theology!
