great basic book
This is a great basic book 70 page book on this subject. I have about 10 different books on camp cooking, and this one covers many areas of outdoor cooking including camp stoves, fire making, selecting the right pots and pans. How to pack lightly is covered as well as sources to find things. Then there are the recipes which all work great and tste delicious. The writer has a homey style that is very comfortable to read, kind of like an old friend or uncle explaining things to you. The book is affordable. The interior illustrations are nice too.

All you need to know is in this little book. Honest!
All you need to know about using a map & compass is in this book. Honest! Bigger books complicate simple things like declination and bearings. I developed and wrote the orienteering and navigation stuff for Minnesota schools--and the heart of it is in this book. BE Map & Compass has earned rave reviews and is recommended by the Boy Scouts.

Slim volume packed with good information
To acquire the knowledge and insight that Cliff Jacobson reveals in "Solo Canoeing" would take a lifetime of experience. Save yourself some time and buy this little gem of a book. He covers all the basics: How to buy, equip, paddle, care for and enjoy a solo canoe. Jacobson has been canoeing for almost 50 years and has been writing about it for 30. His accumulated wisdom of the canoeing sport is vast, yet he is able to condense this down to the knowledge you will need to enjoy this sport. He includes a valuable appendix of suppliers who make the products he recommends in his book. I own several of Jacobson's books. Each one has delivered valuable information that was new and useful to my outdoor adventuring.

Humor and adventure combined
This is a fun book to read along the trail or to curl up with in front of the fire on a long winter's night. All of these camping stories are true, ranging from heart-stopping encounters with grizzly bears to delinquent teens on the run (with no place "civilized" to go!) and of course, park rangers never get lost (ahem.) Then there's the wilderness wedding, complete with an aiklifted dress and the gift of a toaster (yes, folks, a real TOASTER -- can you imagine anything more useless on a canoe trip?) Whether you are a veteran camper of just dreaming about it, this book will tickle your innards.

Strong love...weak will...
For those people who like Cliffs Notes explanations,
but find reading the original text difficult, this
excellent idea for a duo-volume by the same Cliffs
publishers is the ideal answer.
For this volume contains both the text, in fine
readable type, along with explanatory notes in the
wide margins to the right of the text. The volume
also contains excellent photos and drawings to
complement the text.
The names, terms, or words which need further
explanation are printed in the text in darker type,
and then the explanation is found to the right of
the text in the light blue margins. Example from
the text: "The brilliancy might have befitted
ALLADIN'S PALACE [in the text it is dark bold
type, not capitalized] rather than the mansion of
a grave old Puritan ruler." Margin note: Aladdin's
palace: A boy in THE ARABIAN NIGHTS , Aladdin,
discovers a magical lamp and ring that bring him
everything he wishes for."
There are also excellent Commentaries at the end
of each chapter. There is an especially good one
at the end of "The Custom House" intro to the
novel - that commentary includes sections titled:
"Hawthorne's philosophy of writing"; "Hawthorne's
role as surveyor"; "Hawthorne's Puritan heritage";
The origins of this novel"; and "The mirror of
imagination."...

Good Reference
We bought this book for a gift for our 13-yr old nephew. When it arrived, we skimmed through it and immediately went back online to order a copy for ourselves!
Even though I am a veteran hiker & backpacker, Mr. Jacobsen's book has a lot of tips and tricks in it I had never heard of...and some reminders of things I had heard before and forgotten.
This is a great reference for outdoorspeople of all ability levels.

Wow - this book has it all!
With this book, Mr. Jacobson has compiled some of the best tips and ideas for camping out of doors. From winter camping to knot-tying, it is a VERY helpful resource for the beginning/intermediate camper. The book is easy to read and easy to reference with subjects listed in alphabetical order. He covers almost anything you could think you want to know about camping, with very good information on canoeing as well. Read this book before you go!

No real secrets
Some things have evolved over the years, and this gives a varied look at the most recent ideas.

excellent resource
from time to time we all have questions or are looking for confirmation on proper procedure/etiquette in camping. this book proved to be an excellent to me. although i consider myself somewhat experienced, it was refreshing to have several of my ideas confirmed by an expert. on the other hand, what was most valuable was the disproving of out of date camping policies that even the forest rangers havent updated on. a great example is bear proofing your camp. the author firmly disagrees with the traditional "tie it in a tree" procedure. a very good book for beginner to advanced campers/canoeists.

Great book!
I have been paddling for about twenty-five years. I picked up a copy of this book in a used book store and read it cover to cover. I think what moved me was the author's undeniable love of paddling. He states good sound wisdom without climbing on an all knowing soap box. Techniques, method and his own tried and true experiences shine thru. I love to learn new tricks in paddling and camping from my boat. This book is an asset to any paddler's library. I'm in the process of building a spray skirt from the plans provided within.

Amendment
I wrote an earlier review posted here and commented about Mr. Jaconson's references to his other books. I recently recieved an email from the author where he explained some of his reasons for doing so. Key among those reasons was the fact that he often had limited space available due to restraints set by the publisher and wanted to explain where more information could be found. While I still think the refrences can be slightly distracting I now understand Mr. Jacobson's reasons for doing so and thought I should share that information to be read with my previous review. I also noticed in rereading my previous review that it sounded much more harsh than I had intended. Let me be clear: this is an excellent book, well written and filled with great information, and I certainly would reccomend it. My complaint was and is a minor one and shouldn't keep you from purchasing this great book about camping and canoeing.

Worth the cash if you have it
Good reference book, interesting read. The section on BEARS pays for the whole thing. Here I thought I was doing right, but now I find that I am lucky I ain't been et yet.

One of the BEST resources for wilderness canoeing
This book takes you through the planning, paddling, and post adventure stages of an expedition canoeing experience. It is a very thorough collection of expedition canoeing issues, from one of the leading authorities on expedition canoe travel.

A terrific read for novices and pros alike. The writing is easy to follow and accompanied by detailed diagrams and photos.

It is required reading for all of our guides and clients taking part in one of our expeditions.

Expedition Canoeing sets the new standard
Cliff Jacobson has once agian set a new standard for canoe tripping literature. In his most recent publication, Expedition Canoeing: A guide to Canoeing Wild Rivers in North America, Jabobson goes where no other book of this kind has gone. The book is a thorough and comprehensive collection of every aspect of expedition canoe travel. Jacobson covers everything from choosing a river to the meals that you can prepare in barren land, but what sets this book apart from others is that he includes his own novel concepts for the trail alongside time-tested techniques that only someone with his experience can add. This book will surely become the standard against which all other books of this nature will be measured. The book is an absolute must for anyone wishing to venture north with a canoe.

Not the same when Dave isn't doing it live
Some of the lists are very funny, but it's missing something in book form because you're missing Dave's delivery. Also, a one-joke book gets kind of thin quick. I recommend only reading three or four lists at a time so the novelty doesn't wear off. Great bathroom reading.

The Lists Just Keep on Coming
This collection is from the Late Show era, not the Late Night era. However, believe it or not, these top ten lists are funny enough to read and reread. For those of you like myself, who are Letterman fans, this collection, like all previous collections, borders on the essential. Do yourself a favor, though, and buy the Late Night editions as well.

Worldwide Pants
This is another hilarious collection of Top Tens. Will they come out with any more?

A 59 Chapter Novel All Put Simply Into a Small Source
This small Cliff Notes book reviewing Great Expectations is so useful. It helps you understand the Novel better. With this book you can really go in depth with the novel and find the real meaning and message Dickens was trying to express. The book has great character analizations and much more. I would recomend this book to anyone. It is the best source of help for Great Expectations.

Great summary of Dickens' Work
This is a great book to have while reading Great Expectations. It helps break down the writing that Dickens' uses to help you understand the book better. I would recommend this book to anyone reading Great Expectations.
