Save Money, Save Your Health!
Gluten has been a well-kept secret of certain religions and peoples of our society. It is finally coming into the light in today's health-conscious society.

With quality whole wheat available now to anyone with a postal address, the technique of cooking with gluten, either as a meat substitute or a meat filler, can be practiced by everyone. I first discovered gluten in the seventies in a Magic Mill Mormon cookbook. As the making of gluten is fairly time-consuming, I learned to make a lot at a time and storing it for future use.

I have made countless meat dishes with either only gluten or gluten and meat, and most people wouldn't realize any difference! I hope shoppers aren't deceived by the idea that most recipes available are Oriental; gluten can be used by everyone. Certainly, the making of gluten can be easier using a large mixer, but can actually be done by the strong of hand.

Highly recommended book, an excellent resource!

First recipe tried was MOST EXCELLENT!
The first recipe I tried from the book left us with a 'meat-like' product that resembled and tasted like chicken fried steak. It was delicious and the whole family ate it like gang-busters. Storing vital wheat gluten in the cabinet is a much cheaper alternative than purchasing meat and then having to keep it under refrigeration. Strong BUY recommendation.

Excellent vegetarian cookbook using an amazing new food
The only book of its kind that shows you how to make this amazing new food, seitan, from whole wheat. Also included are recipes for preparing this food if bought already prepared. There are more than 200 recipes from appetizers and soups to main dishes and desserts using this 100% vegetarian delicious whole food.

A true Classic Fairy tale
I am a fan of fairy tales. And I love to share my passion for a good story with my son. My 5 year-old loved this book from the first reading.

It is not a short read for a 5 year-old, but it held his attention again and again. It is one of his favorites.

I bought this book because I love the illustrations of Ms. Hyman. We have read "Bearskin" by Howard Pyle, "Little Red Ridinghood", and "The Fortune Teller", all illustrated by Ms. Hyman. Her colors are vibrant and exciting. It seems that every book Ms. Hyman is involved with includes a great story and a great story teller.

"The Water of Life" has it all, love, tests and trials, devotion, greed, and betrayal. It gives us, mother and son, lots to talk about. I recommend this book heartily.

The Water of Life : A Tale from the Brothers Grimm
I am amazed that I never heard about this story until I was over 40 years old! This is an excellent book for teaching children the value of being loving and kind. I recently attended a talk on heroes at work and this book was mentioned. I am so glad that I purchased a copy because it will encourage me (and hopefully some friends that borrow it) that we can be heroes to those around us.

Beautiful tale for all ages
My daughter who is getting her Master's in Art asked for this book for Christmas. She adores Trina Schart Hyman illustrations. I really loved this book. The illustrations are really beautiful with many little interesting things to pick out in them. Children will find the scene from the enchanted castle especially fun. All the princes are sitting frozen in time at a banquet table. One is a frog, one a unicorn, another has butterfly wings, etc. Most of the pictures have a dark cast to them but the last one of the wedding is bright and cheery with little children wearing red costumes and throwing pink petals. The bridal couple are gorgeously dressed too. Moral of the story: Be kind and good and you will achieve true happiness.

The most accessible version; Needleman reads masterfully
After reading several versions of the Bhagavad Gita, I found this one to be the most accessible -- especially listening to it on an audio cassette. I sensed that I really understood the message as the original author intended for the first time. Needleman is a masterful reader, and this contributes to the enjoyment and teaching of this work. I find the wisdom presented here to have had a profound effect on my learning as a human being seeking my spiritual self.

Excellent. You'll enjoy it.
Very well read by Mr. Needleman. I'm listening to it now for the second time. Barbara Stoler-Miller's translation works for me: she translated everything. People's names were not changed, but there are no untranslated Indian words to puzzle the listener. The Dover Publications book, e.g., has some Indian words left untranslated so I sometimes don't know what is being "said". That's why I put down the Dover book and got this tape and am very happy with it. The Bhagavad Gita is very interesting and very thoughtful. I've been interested ever since I saw the Mahabarata (spelling?) presented on PBS. The Bhagavad Gita is a part of that larger story.

A visually beautiful rendition of a timeless tale
"When I was a young girl, I had long braids, and always wanted to be Rapunzel," confided a colleague at a recent meeting. Paul Zelinsky's Caldecott award-winning retelling of this age-old tale of a mother-to-be's craving for the forbidden rapunzel, a possessive sorceress, a beautiful girl with an unending cascade of silky hair shut away in a remote tower, and a handsome prince just might reawaken those desires. In his informative "Note About Rapunzel ," Zelinsky relates how he drew on elements from the early French and Italian sources as well as from the better known Grimm version of this tale to create his own compelling version. Thus, some details of the story are less familiar. Rapunzel naively reveals that she has had a visitor in the tower when she asks the sorceress to help her with her dress for, "It is growing so tight around my waist, it doesn't want to fit me anymore." Other elements, retold in their familiar spare rhythm, such as "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!" retain ther original power. Zelinsky uses the formal beauty of Renaissance art to evoke both the physical beauty of the characters and the Italian landscape. His large oil paintings overflow with softly muted colors, billowing folds of finely detailed period costumes, ornate architecture, and majestic landscapes. His masterful use of glinting and filtering light illuminates every page. Zelinsky's Rapunzel is a book to be treasured by anyone who appreciates a timeless tale and delights in an object of visual beauty.

A superbly detailed version of a traditional tale.
An excellent choice for many ages. This book is a beautiful and rich rendition of a traditional tale. Zelinsky has filled the pages with orderly, exquisitie details that are reminescent of Renaissance paintinings. The illustrations merit review closely and the reader will find new wonders each time they visit the work. Children of all ages will find enjoyment in these pages. Readers may particularly enjoy the intricate tower Rapunzel is locked in. The text has just enough suspense and evil and good strike a comfortable balance for chlidren.

No other description - Gorgeous!
This past weekend, our 3-1/2 year old daughter's grandparents came into town. Her Nonna told her a bedtime story about Rapunzel, a story she had not heard before. She was enchanted. Needless to say, Nonna went out the next day to buy a book and she came home with Paul Zelinsky's beautiful book.

I can't comment on the accuracy and literary side of the book - I'm not an expert on the original tale. However, the writing is wonderful; the story is an easy read with younger children. But clearly, the illustrations are what set this book apart. Many children's books use child-like pictures - but each page of this book is a new and different work of art. Detail and texturing worthy of an art gallery make this a pleasure to view as well as read. Highly recommended.

A daughter's moving novel on an exceptional émigré to Mexico
Much has been written about the generous influence of the Spanish-Republican emigration to Mexico, but little is said of the valuable contribution of North American émigrés during the hard days of McCarthyism. That is the case of Emile Jacobs, an American of Lebanese origin, who left for Mexico following the beautiful eyes of a woman and searching for the horizons that were closed to him at home because of his political militancy. In Mexico he founded a generous and talented family. Earlier, he had been Correspondent for a North American magazine in Moscow during the 30's and traveled extensively throughout Europe where he combat fascism. On his return to the U.S., he joined the Communist party and later the Lincoln Brigade who defended the Spanish Republic. He fought two years in Spain and later enlisted himself in the Army of his country. He died in Mexico last Jan 9, 1999. Her daughter, Barbara Jacobs, has preserved in this emotional novel the memory of an exceptional man.
