An essential reference for paperfolding enthusiasts
The art of paperfolding has been one of my interests for many years and one I enjoy sharing with my students. This book is a great reference, first of all because the illustrations are very clear and easy to follow. The projects range from simple to somewhat advanced, but none are too difficult to make once you understand the basic folds. My students are always particularly fascinated by the figures that "do things" such as the "Chinese Balloon," which you can blow up and toss around, the "Bird with Flapping Wings," which really seems to fly, and the "Snapping Alligator," which, well, you guessed it. Other paperfolds from this book that never cease to amuse children as well as adults are the "Money Fold Bow Tie," and "Jumping Frog." If you are not sufficiently amazed with your finished paperfold as it is, the author gives additional options and uses for each. Paperfolding is beautiful, magical and tons of fun. This book is a must have if you enjoy the art as much as I do.

useful for beginners
Very useful book, especially for beginners. Unlike some of the Japanese origami books, this assumes no prior cultural knowledge, so you can knock off some easy projects quickly, and do some quite complicated ones later. Recommended!

Fun & Easy to learn
This book is amazing! It has many interesting projects to do. Unlike other origami books, this book teaches you easy methods of folding. It doesn't take long for you to become a master at origami and you'll have fun too. Invest in this book soon and you won't regret it.

The Perfect Christmas Storybook
For my siblings and me, the absolute favorite book from our childhood that certainly deserves resurrection. Its wonderful and mostly humorous Christmas stories and poems are centered around animals and all subtly present caring and giving as their centerpiece. The Richard Scarry illustrations that accompany it are fantastic.

Wonderful book for small children
My parents read this book to me when I was a child and I've always loved it. My favorite poem in it is called "A Pigs Merry Christmas". In it a pig goes to the store to shop for friends and ends up buying only for himself...late he sees that it's much more fun to give than to get!

Window To The Soul Of An Unknown Culture
In recent years, we have become familiar with televised pictures of a Europe that few Americans could place on a map. How lucky we are, then, that Sonja Kravanja has honored us with her masterful translations of the poet Edvard Kocbek, and thereby an introduction to the literature of her native Slovenia. Few translators have the ability to literally place the reader inside the thoughts of an author, yet this is what Kravenja has done. A rare and deeply emotional body of work, a window into the mind of a remarkable Eastern European poet.

Sonja Kravanja has chosen excellent Kocbek poems.
Kravanja's translation of Kocbek's poems is wonderful. Each poem is distinctive - full of insight and understanding. Most impressive, however, is how incredibly beautiful the poetry is.

Popular Songs of Nineteenth Century America: Complete Original Song Sheets for 64 Songs

American History Through Song
The best of the best of songs that the 60+ generation remembers hearing as old songs in their childhood, and that younger generations have been exposed to through movies, cartoons, documentaries and the like. There are many more sappy tunes than of other varieties, but life was hard in the 19th century in the United States. Still, there are some outstanding highlights. These include civil war songs like When Johnny Comes Marching Home and Battle Cry of Freedom, the witty Arkansaw Traveler (that's how they spell it) and the smarmy Man On the Flying Trapeze, plus favorites of later generations like Turkey in the Straw (in its original mildly-offensive ethnic format), Grandfathers Clock, and one that all Three Stooges fans will know, Listen to the Mockingbird. You would be hard pressed to find a similar collection elsewhere that includes the original verses AND unaltered lyrics, and financially pressed to duplicate it on your own. Besides, this is a new book that won't flake off onto your keys like old sheet music. Get the book. Then you can write me later to thank me for the endorsement!!

Fascinating collection!
A collection of sheet music for popular songs of the 1800s, this book is interesting for more than just playing the songs. The covers of these beautiful songsheets are all reproduced, occasionally including such information as the cover to "Johnny Get Your Gun," which states "Ethiopian Song and Chorus, Originated and Sung by America's Popular Comedians, Sheffer and Blakely, and Written For Them by F. Belasco."

The table of contents (and the songs themselves) are organized alphabetically by title, and includes who wrote the words, the music, who the publisher was, and the date and location of publication. I was interested to see how many hits Oliver Ditson & Co of Boston had -- the equivalent of our record "singles" today. They were the first publishers of "Jingle Bells," "Battle Hymn of the Republic," "Tenting On the Old Campground," "Sweet By and By," "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," and "Oh, My Darling Clementine," all of which are included here.

There is a five-page introduction, with general information about music and music publishing of the 1800s, and at the back of the book, notes on each song. There is also a bibliography of sources Mr. Jackson used to write the introduction and notes. (Richard Jackson was the Head of the Americana Collection for the Music Division of the New York Public Library when this collection was published in 1976.)

Otherwise, this book is page after page of piano-vocal music. The arrangements would not be very difficult for an advanced piano student, and most people who've had some training could learn to play at least some of the songs. A particular favorite is "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" which has a lively introduction I've not seen before, and directions on when the words are to be sung by a soloist or the chorus. "Vive la compaignie" includes four-part harmony, and several other songs include more than one line.

Other favorites of mine include "The Flying Trapeze," "Lorena," "Long, Long Ago," "Silver Threads Among the Gold," and "Whispering Hope."

The arrangements are different from what we are used to hearing, and, like all good folk music, give a certain insight into the hearts and thoughts of the people of those particular times.

Well worth the relatively low cost . . .

A great book for young readers
If you can find a copy of this book, I recommend it highly as perfect for young readers. The stories and poems are very short and to the point so a child won't be overwhelmed by a huge plot or excess of words. This was one of my first books and one from which my mom taught me to read at 3 years of age. I hope to do the same with my daughter.

EXCELLENT
When I was a little girl my mom would read this book to my sister & I every nite. We always looked forwarded to having a story read from the book. I am 26 now and I treasure the book very much, even with out the cover intact! My sister is pregnant and I would like to order the book for her so her child can enjoy what we did. Please make the book available soon!!! Thank You.

A must for any mass communication scholar
This is one of the best texts on the effects, either real or imagined, of mass communication on its consumers. Texts on research can be hard to get through. However, Richard Jackson Harris takes years of scholarly writings from the classic "Bobo Doll Study" to the latest in mass communication research and provides the reader with one of the most objective, comprehensive, witty and easy-to-read texts this subject.

For any mass communication scholar or practitioner, this is an absolute must read. I have written several research papers throughout college and graduate school, and this book was an indespensible tool. If communication is your thing, get it now!

Lears: One of the Most Important Historians of Our Time
Jackson's essay in this book, "From Salvation to Self-Realization," gives us an honest look at the remapping of economic morality in secular rather than religious terms. What could be more important to a consumer society like our own than when we stopped holding back and "gave in," as it were, to our desires? As Lears explains, "....... consumer culture of the late nineteenth century,.... encouraged to express themselves not through accomplishments but through the ownership of things." I find this profound I also understand that Professor Lears is now concentrating his energies on the cultural signfifance and attitudes regarding gambling. Has anyone else notice that Nevada is the fast-growing state in the U.S. and that the taboo associated with gambling has been removed? When are we going to be brave enough as a society to listen to Professor Lears?

Strength of the human spirit
Brain Damaged is a facinating read of one man's winning struggle to come back from a dibilitating injury. After a unique and successful early life of adventure and business, the author learns the real value of life, wife and friends while in recovery from major brain surgery. His setbacks and achievemnts are many during rehabilitation, culminating in his new career as an author. This book chronicles the road into and beyond brain damage. Well worth while reading.

Brain-Damage: A Book About Overcoming Cognitive Deficit and
Dick Schmeltzof's very personal book, Brain Damage, is both heartwarming and informative. He treats a very serious subject with humor, wit and compassion. It is difficult to imagine the drastic changes that have occurred in Dick's life since the emergency surgery to remove a tumor on his pituitary gland. But through his carefully constructed narrative, we can "feel" his frustrations and also revel in the incremental -- yet moving forward -- progress that he makes. His is a story of great courage, hope and love; a lesson for Humanity. Thanks to Dick for sharing this moving and insightful story of life after brain surgery. Readers will laugh. They will weep. And finally, they will applaud this incredible human being. Dick demonstrates a real gift for storytelling through this book. Let's hope he delights us with "Brain Damage II".

Hats Off To Mr. Schmelzkopf!
This book is an outstanding example of an individual's true courage to tackle challenges that most of us cannot imagine. Mr. Schmelzkopf's wonderful sense of humor invites the reader to learn about brain damage and how it effects all areas of an individual's life, as well as their family's lives. His descriptive approach about his cognitive deficits allows the reader to envision a patient's perception of his own environment. Mr. Schmelzkopf's comical, honest, informative style catagorizes his story as a must to read and a difficult to put down book!
