This is a very readable and engrossing history of the Jewish people from the late Greek period, including the time from the desecration of the temple by Antiochus Epiphanes to the Bar Kochba rebellion. It is very engrossing and a thoroughly enjoyable read. Although useful for history students, it is not just a collection of dates and names. As a Christian, I read it to get background for the time of Jesus. For this purpose, the book was quite useful. It is not a Christian book, but it is, what I will call, "Christian friendly" - not being given to endless refutations of Jesus, nor subtle anti-Jesus innuendo. I think this book should be required reading for seminary students. My understanding of the culture in which Our Savior lived was greatly enhanced by this book.
