A well-told story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit
I just finished reading "Blind Courage" for the second time. Bill Irwin's story offers a timeless story of courage, faith, and a triumphant spirit as he was the first "blind" person to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. I write "blind" because Bill may not have the sense of eyesight, but throughout the book has great insight into persons he meets along his walk, and relates the greatest insight into his own self and his strengths and weaknesses, on a hike (he was not an experienced hiker) all possible by his enduring faith in our Lord and his confidence in his Seeing Eye dog, Orient. The book flows well, doesn't sound "preachy", and reads quickly--almost too quickly as we want to hear more. This is a great story by a great man who spent his first almost 50 years in turmoil, broken relationships, and losing his eyesight, but he finds himself and encourages and uplifts others along his hike. By the way, if you have an opportunity to hear him speak, Bill Irwin is an outstanding public speaker with a great message and is a very friendly individual. In summary, read this book if you are looking for modern heroes and uplifting people of faith doing the "impossible" regardless of whether you enjoy "outdoor/hiking/camping" books or not.

A step of Faith !
My review of this book is one of pure joy and inspiration. From the moment I laid eyes on this book I knew it had a great message written in it. I meet Bill and Orient when they came to the Lititz Grace Brethern Church. Even after reading his story and hearing his testomony it was totally indescribleable. Bill is a wonderful speaker and Orient is just the most lovable dog you could ever know. To have a dog like that which leads you over that terrain from Georgia to Maine is a true friend.

They both had a good friend in the Lord and he truly lead them on a spititrual path and from all of this a remarkable story. Again I personally give this book FIVE STARS.

This book and this mans story can change your life!
This man has an incredible story to share with you. It is a book that you cannot put down once you start reading it. It will give you encouragement and hope. He still hikes parts of the trail every year encouraging the people out there today.

Excellent information on diamonds and colored gemstones
This is the best book I have ever seen on diamonds, gemstones and jewelry. I contains excellent information on what to look for in each category of gemstones. It also contains great photo examples of properly cut stones and common problem areas. It explains the independent lab grading process and shows how to read the grading reports.

A well researched treasure
One of the best books ever written if you are interested in collecting or investing in diamonds and colored gemstones. Discusses basic gemology, an analysis of the most commonly traded gemstones, colored gemstone and diamond grading with laboratory grading reports, gemstone treatments, pricing cycles, gemstone investing, gemstone markups and appraisals. Although this book is a little out of date, it is an excellent resource for beginners.

The Allure of the Ancients, or Why We Study the Classics
Every time I come to get bummed out about the classics and the continuing attempt by college profs to remove it as far from everyday life as possible, I read this book, and then I'm as giddy as a school boy again, ready to tackle with enthusiasm Homer, Horace, and Lucan. This is a must for anyone, including those whose classical education consisted of only a mandatory perusal of The Odyssey in the 6th grade.

excellent discussion
An excellent comprehensive and jargon free discussion which is very well illustrated. Probably the best introduction to Neoclassicism in the Arts.

Well-grounded OB course basics
"The organizational behavior reader" contains twenty chapters, each with two or three readings by recognized academic experts, usually adapted from the original source, e.g., Harvard Business Review. Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.

Professors of organizational behavior, looking for readings rather than integrated text, exercises, and cases, as well as a less expensive alternative to traditional college textbooks, will find this book appealing. These authors are, in general, engaging and highly readable. Chapters can be assigned in an order or avoided altogether to please the teacher's preferences. The breadth of topics, the currency of the treatments, and the expertise of the authors provide a solid foundation for the primary college OB course. Graduate students in need of less text structure and faculty in need of less ancillary materials will find the most benefit.

The book is rooted in social psychology and emphasizes perception, learning, thinking, images and personality, e.g., interpersonal communication, attribution, creativity. There is less on the 'behavior' side of organizational behavior. Several authors use the device of posing 'myths' to contrast with the author's learned, alternative state ('fact'), and sometimes the myths read more like 'conventional wisdom' or the author's own attempt to make his or her point more vivid by presenting a myth that exists only in the minds of a few people. For business school students, this reader is more about organizations and people than about business. Business faculty and courses adopting this book will likely want and need to provide a management context.

Organizational Behavior: An Experiential Approach

Amazon base price: $41.33
Used price: $5.00

An Experiential Approach describes this OB book well.
Osland, Kolb, and Rubin continue to make a fine book better. The buyer is well advised to think about the title before making a purchase. Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach makes clear that much of the text will be devoted to things like "Learning Style Inventories," "Thematic Apperception Tests," "Past Experience Inventories", "Active Listening Exercises," Case Studies, Role Plays, and the like. Many of these exercises may be easily completed and scored by the reader. Some, like the Thematic Apperception Test, are difficult for the reader to score accurately, but not impossible. Many of the exercises, such as active listening, require a partner, and some simulations require a larger group to complete the work.

The introductory text to the experiential exercises at the end of each chapter is well written and instructive. In a few words the authors make valuable points about perception, motivation, leadership, decision-making and problem solving, group work, and team development. They have in mind the professional manager who has on-the-job experience; a younger reader might find it difficult to relate to the tone and style of the book, which is aimed at a literate, educated, intelligent audience.

College professors, many of whom are a finicky lot, have adopted this book for their organizational behavior courses for over twenty years. That they continue to select this text is testimony to its enduring appeal and value.

For those readers who want a more conventional approach to the subject of organizational behavior, Stephen Robbins has written a variety of OB books that are comprehensive, readable, and even entertaining. Robbins covers more ground than Osland, but has less room for personal application of the material.

The reader who wants to learn from concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experiementation will find Organizational Behavior: an Experiential Approach an excellent resource for further study and application.

Excellent hiking and wildflower resource
As a botanist who loves hiking and flowers, I was thrilled to get the chance to "field test" this wonderful guide to Colorado's high mountains. It is organized by elevation so you can follow spring up higher as summer progresses. It clearly states the hike length, the terrain, the location, gives directions AND best of all - lists what flowers you will see! I found this book to be an extraordinary guide to the region and it helped me tailor my vacation and plan my hikes. The photos of the mountain scenery were very good and the close ups of the flowers were terrific. I think I actually bumped into the author on a hike (I recognized her from the photo in the back!). Terrific book!
