John Adams - A Joy to Know
When I first read this book many years ago, I fell in love with John Adams. Stone brought to life not only this most honorable of our founding fathers, and his beloved wife Abigail, but other "characters" of our nation's revolutionary history such as Samuel Adams, a rabble-rouser who was afraid to ride horses. So many intimate details of John and Abigails's life together were brought to this novel that you feel as though you know and love them both. You can't go wrong with this one.

It's so romantic
"Those Who Love" got me hooked on the saga of John and Abigail Adams. Thiers was a true love match that endured through joy and pain, triumph and trajedy. Stone's sprawling novel follows the pair from thier spirited first meeting, through the hellish American Revolution, and into the turbulent White House years. A fantastic read.

A timeless love story that relates to American history
For Those Who Love was a timeless love story that relates to American history. When you read this story, you will not be able to put it down. It tells you about historical events that happened in Boston during Abigail's life and how our country was formed. It was a beautiful story that a person who likes romantic novels could read, or one that a person interested in history could read. I personally fell in love with the Adams'.

greatest love story, and historical novel ever written!
I really enjoy Irving Stone's novels. He writes factually, and very humanistically. You feel like you are right there with the characters and experiencing everything that they are going through. Immortal Wife has been my favorite book since I was a teenager. Jessie Benton Fremont was a great supporter of her husband. Whether it be his political aspirations, his travels through California, or any trouble that he got into. A great book if you enjoy romance, history and the flavor of the Civil War era. John C. Fremont was a great explorer, and he and his wife were very much against slavery, and started the civil war talk on slavery even before President Lincoln did! This is a must read.

greatest love story, and historical book to date, egreat book
I find reading Irving Stone very informative. I get my romance and my history all rapped up into one book. Immortal Wife has been my favorite nov el since I was a young girl. My husband just recently purchased the book for me, and I reread it. I loved it the second time too!!

better than irving
The genius of this piece is that Irving has created a character in T.S.Garp who is an even better writer than himself. "The Pension Grillparzer," Garp's first and best work, is even better than Irving could have written himself.

natural storyteller
this story within a story, to me, is the highlight of the world according to garp. the plot is funny and beautiful and sad and humbles me as a writer. this story holds its own outside of the context of the novel, however i recommend it be read in the book for full effect.

A fascinating look at an American town.
Thomas Williams blends intricate prose with real skill for story-telling. His accounts of Leah bring the town to life, filling it with vibrant characters and a tangible spirit of the northeastern United States.

A throwback book of men's short stories.
This is one of my favorite collection of short stories. If you like Hemingway's short stories and if you live or like to visit New England you will love these stories.

Finally: An overview of important validity research
The Rorschach, and also the Comprehensive System (RCS), has been inadvertently criticised - continuosly - although the research associated with the reliability and validity of the method has increadingly accumulated during the years - and in particular in the late 90's. However, as Kubiszyn (?) et al. recently have written, this research is not all that easily found, nor is it for the ordinary clinician particularly easy to read and understand, part of it being so complex and statistically advanced. Therefore, this book - published by Wiley in 2003 - is so important. It not only gives the development and structure of the RCS, nor the strategy of cluster analysis, but the book contains hundreds of well conducted bot reliability and in particular validity studies, aggregated in proper places where the different variables and ratios are described - and this is an immense improvement as compare to the 1993 (3rd) edition. I, who am the person primarily responsible for convincing people in Finland of how well the RCS functions - as well as teaching psychologists to mastery - am extremely grateful for all the additional and well organized research published here. When I wrote a about 20 pages review of reliability and validity for the Yearbook Rorschachiana 2003 this would have bene an assed to have - now I am primarily using it in an RCS educational program (165 lectures)in Finland. I am also producing an excerpt of probably some 50-60 singlespaced pages in Finnish regarding in particular the most important peaces of scientific work, confirming the reliability and validity reseacrh related to the RCS!

An Updated Classic
As a clinical psychologist who uses the Rorschach regularly and teaches it to graduate students, I have always relied upon this volume as a bible of sorts for all-things-Rorschach. The newest edition is a wonderful updating of the classic. Despite being about the same number of pages as the last edition, this volume packs much more information in, and is written in a more concise and relevant way. Exner has updated some of the historical lore regarding Hermann and the roots of his test, as well as incorporating a full chapter on controversies surrounding the Rorschach. Furthermore, the interpretive section is modeled after the format of the very useful Primer on Rorschach Interpretation, and incorporates all of the recent changes and innovations in the Comprehensive System. This volume could easily be the "one stop shop" for Rorschachers, as it has normative data, administration and scoring guidelines, and a well-organized interpretive section. Who could ask for more?

The children of Pike Street in sad world of uncertainty
While Mary Ellen Mark and husband,Martin Bell, were filming
their haunting masterpiece,Streetwise,in 1983,Mary Ellen was
also busy taking snap-shots of the runaways...and what a worthwhile effort this was!
Anyone who viewed the film will recognize most of the photographs of the Seattle runaways found in the same-titled book.
The Streetwise kids lived in a sad world of uncertainty. Many had fled from abusive homes.
Mary Ellen developed a closeness with many of her young subjects, including Dewayne and Lulu.Dewayne hanged himself in 1984,and Lulu died in a fight with a man in 1985.Mary Ellen has dedicated her book in their memories.
Like every other work that she has ever created, this book is a keep-sake.I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the film documentary and in the author`s work.

Disabling Professions is a must for all professionals
The trouble with this book is that it makes you rethink your whole reason for being! It is an insightful review of how professions have incapacitated the people and issues they set out to help. It focused on medicine, law and the helping professions but is relevant to all of us. It makes you think - am I creating a reason for being? should I be really working myself out of a job? Empowering for those who feel they MUST employ a professional for all things - think again.

The German Atomic Bomb: The History of Nuclear Research in Nazi Germany
Published in Paperback by DaCapo Press (April, 1988)

Amazon base price: $14.95
Used price: $52.53
Collectible price: $85.00
Average review score:

Well reseached a technically thourgh, excellent.
This book tells the story of German nuclear research from 1930's to 1945. This book shows the history of the nuclear chemistry germane to the nuclear bomb and then tells the story of experiments and internal politics in the third reich. For instance an error was made in an experiment to test the suitability of CARBON as a moderator in reactors. This forced the germans to rely on heavy water, and the only large scale production in the world at that time was in norway (british commandos saw to that in 1943, a good chapter of the book). More frightening is the lack of safety with nuclear materials used in those days. One photograph shows british and american intellegence officers dismantling the last secret german atomic pile. They are handling everything with bare hands and are wearing normal lightwieght army clothing (not a gas mask in sight even). The first few chapeters of this book give a good history (and explanation) of nuclear chemistry. The author must have been trained in chemistry/physics to write this clearly on it. PS the ENGLISH edition is titled "THE VIRUS HOUSE" (this was the name put up on the door of the first german reactor in the MIDDLE of berlin, the sign was to keep people out !)

A powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected
The Headmaster's Papers by Richard A. Hawley is the literate and engaging story of John Greeve, headmaster for a small, independent New England boys' school, whose personal and professional life begins to disintegrate around him. Faced with the crumbling of his meticulously ordered routine, Greeve must accept the challenge and fight for his school, his family, and even his own life. Originally published almost twenty years ago, Richard Hawley's The Headmaster's Papers continues to be very highly recommended as a powerful saga of courage and adapting to the unexpected.
