I had this book for years and always got a laugh out of it. It highlights actual laws still on the books (as of date of print back in the 70's, but still humorous!) across the country. I can't recommend this book enough if you need a good laugh. If you have this book or are lucky enough to find one, hold onto it. My copy was stolen!

Dick Hyman, one of today's supreme jazz pianists, packs a lifetime of experience into this volume of 187, spiral-bound pages. He gives hints on improvisation and arranging; insights into the art of such jazz giants as Art Tatum, James P. Johnson, and his one-time mentor Teddy Wilson; a transcription of a previously-unknown Bix Beiderbecke piece; samples of his own compositions, including those for Woody Allen movies; and more. Hyman recounts, also, experiences on stage, in clubs, and in studios, describing the problems characteristic of each venue along with his own solutions. Finally, he invites us into his inner world with thoughts, musings, and speculations on musical matters ranging from piano touch and performing Chopin to electronic keyboards and modalism in jazz. It is part how-to, part autobiography, part "what if" and "why not". Highly recommended.

A wonderful opportunity to learn some solid changes. It's a pleasure for us younger players to memorize pieces using such a reliable, high-quality fake book of jazz/pop standards--often sung by Sinatra, Bennett, Connick, Krall and many others. Please keep them coming Mr. Hyman, keep them coming.
