This book is a modernized, edited version of Law's work entitled "An Humble, Earnest, and Affectionate Address to the Clergy," published in 1761. In the introduction, Dave Hunt notes that Dr. Andrew Murray brought it back into print in 1896 under the present title (The Power of the Spirit) because he didn't "know where to find anywhere else the same clear and powerful statement of the truth which the Church needs at the present day." Murray also said: "I have tried to read or consult every book I knew of that treats of the work of the Holy Spirit, and nowhere have I met with anything that brings the truth of our dependence upon the continual leading of the Spirit, and the assurance that that leading can be enjoyed without interruption, so home to the heart as the teaching of the present volume." This is quite a statement! Nonetheless, Hunt does note that, like Murray, he doesn't agree with all of Law's teachings (considering his entire writings) although he and Murray do believe that the message of this book on the Holy Spirit is soundly based upon Scripture. William Law was a Protestant mystic who delved into many of the classics of Christian mysticism and eventually developed a particular interest in the Protestant mystic Jacob Boehme and later became known as one of his most prominent disciples. Law is best known for his classic "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" which was treasured by such notables as John Wesley, George Whitefield, Samuel Johnson, and later, C. S. Lewis. An unedited version of this classic, along with his work "The Spirit of Love", is available in the Paulist Press series entitled "The Classics of Western Spirituality." Dave Hunt notes that although his edited version of Law's "Address to the Clergy" was taken primarily from Murray's edition, he has drawn upon several of Law's other books, including the afore mentioned classic. Since I own the complete works of William Law, I had the privilege of comparing Hunt's version to the original. There are definitely some notable changes and editing although I think it is safe to say that the heart of Law's book is certainly present in this edited, modern version which certainly is easier to read.

Law's emphasis is on the dynamic power of the Spirit in contrast to the stagnant, intellectualism that he found prevalent in his day (and which is, in certain circles, prominent today). It is not enough to be doctrinally correct, to have skill in Greek and Hebrew, to belong to this or that denomination. One must have a living relationship with God through His Spirit which defines what it means to have everlasting life. This life is not defined by a past experience, but a present and ongoing personal walk with God which produces fruits of righteousness. There is no place for Self in this spiritual walk, this divine-human relationship, which is defined as a submissive obedience to the Spirit's guidance. The contrast between Self and the Spirit, the natural and the supernatural, is prominent in this book. I must also add that Law's immersion in the Christian classics, including those penned by so-called mystics, is notable as well. Take this from one who has read many of them. Although I too don't agree with everything that Law wrote, I certainly enjoyed reading this work both in the original and in this easy-to-read and edited format. Highly recommended!

This is one of those rarest of books. For those with understanding the words leap from the page into your mind and become fire.

Without a doubt one of the best written works on the Holy Spirit. William Law was a man who had a profound influence in the Lives of the men of the 1700 Revival (John Westley, Charles Westley and George Whitfield.) If you want to know why, read this book, "touch and see" for yourself what it means to be led by the Spirit of God and find out what it realy means to be Born from above and experience what William and others called the "new birth."

Well, move it on over Phinneas Fogg. Around the world in eighty days just doesn't cut it anymore! Join these two lunatics, the intrepid Chalmers and Valvur, as they tear around the planet in a 17 day pursuit of glory and cold beer, not to mention hundreds of arcane tasks which must be completed to win the most unique scavenger hunt of all time. These guys are nuts: highly adaptable, courageous, stupid, cunning, energetic, and numbingly exhausted as they wend their way across 4 continents, stubbornly refusing to admit that winning this race really nets them nothing except for the richly deserved bragging rights they earn as perhaps the craziest tourists many parts of our world have ever encountered. Put them up there with Stephens and Catherwood, Lewis and Clark, Stanley and Livingston, and Laurel and Hardy. Funny, insightful, irreverend, and ultimately charming. I had a blast reading this book, and you will too.

This debut book by Chalmers is smart, witty and offers the reader an insight of our Global Village at 80 mph. Wow! An unbelievable travel epic. Even though he was a cultural terrorist, his descriptions of the destinations he visited were a combination of beauty, the truthful realities and a birds-eye-view of the sights and sounds of the most exotic of locales. I'm looking forward to where his travels take me next.

i like this book alot it has taught me a lot about solving cases. i enjoy this book because i want to be a detective just like him one day.

Encyclopedia Brown does it again! This book was just as entertaining as the others! I originally bought this book for my nephew (10 years) and I ended up reading most of it with him! Needless to say, he loved it and so did I! He now wants to read more about Encyclopedia Brown and I can't wait to buy them for him!

His medical education at Transylvania, experiences in the Cherokee removal to Oklahoma, the Mexican War, the Gold Rush and the Civil War make this biography of William Hunt, M.D. most interesting reading. Having just heard Alice Hunt Lynn Howell speak and having read the book, I can recommend it to anyone interested in Civil War era medicine or the divided loyalties in East Tennessee. Some say sentiments in East Tennessee were the most equally divided of any section in the nation. Dr. Hunt's imprisonment in Tuscaloosa when he was a suspected conspirator in the Lincoln-approved Bridge Burning incident in 1861 was a highlight. Since he was a brother-in-law of "Parson" Brownlow, editor of the Knoxville Whig and post-war Governor of Tennessee, who mentioned him often, and since he was quite literate himself, Dr. Hunt left a paper trail that enabled his descendant to write this highly recommended book. The well-chosen illustrations, references and comprehensive index make it a useful tool for the professional historian.

This book is kind of like a "Find Waldo" book, except this one comes with a story maze, and puzzles. It is a good book for students grade levels K-2. It is a fantasy and a very fun book for students to read and explore.

If you really like helicopters you must have this book. You can read the incredible description of the creation of the vertical flight made by Hunt, that share with us his many years of working on Igor's team. The photos are very nice and you can't stop before the last page.

Would you believe a major gay book with a narrator from -- are you ready? -- Santa Fe, New Mexico! This from an author, William Maltese, who has made himself an international best-seller of gay "literaure" by writing primarily about blond blue-eyed California surfer-types (CALIFORNIA CREAMIN', SUMMER SWEAT) and/or about New York City's upper crust (his Stud Draqual mystery series).

Granted SS MANN HUNT's Brad Lexly and his fellow gay characters get plopped down, by the author, into the middle of the exotic Brazilian Amazon, but that's in order to provide a plot line far more intricate and involved (and, I think, far more interesting), than the more simplistic plot Maltese provides in his sex-lead novel WHEN SUMMER COMES. Not to say that there isn't plenty of explicit sex in SS MANN HUNT, hot and heavy enough for just about anyone, but it "hangs" on a story, a mystery, and a romance that are complex and exciting above and beyond all of the heavy breathing. The book is a well-worked departure for the author that reminds me of Alex von Mann's SLAVES, except this book has a far more satisfactory conclusion.

Everything about SS MANN HUNT is pretty enjoyable and worth the price, starting with Brad's being a gay from Santa Fe, instead of from New York City, or from Los Angeles, or from San Francisco. The Brazilian locale of the novel is exotic enough, the mystery mysterious enough, the love story romantic enough, to hold your attention. Did I mention how much I personally loved that two of the characers have a romantic homosexual history that's allowed to re-blossom within the hot-house jungle environment but can again go sour at any moment? As for the underlying Nazi (SS-thunderbolts insignia) implications, well I doubt that this particular subject matter will EVER be totally exhuasted by way of providing riveting story-telling material.

It's a great day when a great gay author of Maltese's obvious caliber, stature, and international popularity, along with his publisher, start admitting there are gays who exist in the broad heretofore pretty-much-ignored "hinterland" between the much-ballyhooed metropolitan gay areas of the U.S.'s East and West coasts. And this book deserves success for this reason alone, as well as for all of the other inherent good-read reasons that'll see it become another international classic for its author.
