Any photographer and dark room enthusiast/student will benefit from this book which provides more than adequate instructional information on processes such as: infrared, printing on artist papers, wood, or glass, polaroid images, handcoloring, bleaching & toning, and copystand work only to name a few. I particularly enjoyed the bleaching & toning over handcoloring for adding color to my black & whites and her example photographs for this process are inspirational.
We used this particular book in our creative photo class. My fellow classmates became very enthusiastic about their accomplishments, and attributed their successes, in class, to this book. Theresa Airey has an MFA in photography and fine arts and has put together a splendid book that will be an asset to any photographer's library.
First it covers manipulating, hand coloring, scanning and even recycling mistakes made with time-zero Polaroid film. Then black and white infrared photography using filters, metering and flash is covered along with film processing and printing. Bleaching and toning are next including great sections on copper split toning, posterization effects and creating pseudo flesh tones. Then emulsion transfers are shown including silverprint and liquid light. These create some great effects on non-traditional surfaces.
Image transfers and emulsion lifts follow. You are shown how to used a slide printer to make a print, make a projection print and transfer images onto non-paper surfaces like glass or silk, even getting two prints from one. Lastly, Polaroid instant slide films, solarization, photo transfers and hand coloring are discussed in detail.
All the instructions are excellent and thorough, covering everything from loading the camera to choosing and developing the film. There are a few demonstrations, lots of examples and great troubleshooting sections for each technique.
The appendixes in the back are very helpful. They include paper selection and characteristics, instructions on working with a copystand and a list of suppliers. This is a wonderful book to help the photographer with some darkroom experience move on to create awesome special effects photos.

Other than that, this health book is realistic, and informative.
I'm at the 75 raw/25 cooked point myself, and at 58, I'm in better health than at any other time in my life.
In Chapter 1, we read how we have exchanged, in the last century, a plant-based diet for a meat-based one, and how "the results have proven to be disastrous for our health and the environment".
The regeneration of cells is a fascinating topic (it takes 7 years to complete a full regeneration), and Mr. Clement states that "It's not added years that cause the body to age into a diseased state. It's the cell starvation that results from years of ingesting processed and cooked foods" (pg.42).
The causes and cures for many diseases are discussed, as well as depression and alcoholism, and the "Mind/Body Connection".
There are numerous food lists, and show how to combine foods for the best nutritional results and ease of digestion.
Under "Shopping for Recreational Foods", some cooked food is listed, so one can have a little "fun with food" from time to time.
There's a chapter on sprouts, and how to germinate them, and the value of doing so, as well as over 50 pages of recipes. Page 235 has this simple one:
"Avocado Cups
1 ripe avocado, peeled and pitted
4 apples, cored and chopped
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup pure water
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Pour into glass custard cups and serve immediately.
Makes 4 servings"
"You'll come to see that the Hippocrates diet isn't a trial by sacrifice, but rather a challenge of change. It's time to look in new directions for the food your body needs" (pg.114)
If you want to maximize your health and increase your energy level, I highly recommend trying this raw food diet. If implemented gradually, there will be little in the way of withdrawal symptoms, and I'm amazed that I no longer crave either sugar or coffee...this coming from someone who has had an addiction to sugar since childhood.

Theresa Maggio not only tells a wonderful story, but she is able to paint the scenes and views she has seen into the readers mind. You can see the colorful boats owned by the fishermen, smell the drying nets as they hang in the damp cannery building, and feel the warm sun as she rides her bike from her tiny room into the piazza to wait for her voyage to the chamber of death out at sea.
I am always looking in the NYT travel section for Miss Maggio's travel stories which have appeared over the years. Her photographs are wonderful and revealing of a time and tempo of the villages she visits and shares with us.
Her book is scientifically accurate, honest and a very lovely read.
The book, "Mattanza," begins with a bang, when Maggio describes the first time she views the trapping and killing of bluefin tuna. As I read her description of the mattanza, I found it awesome, fascinating and sad. I could actually visualize the fishermen and the giant bluefin tuna. I could envision both fishes and men struggling to win their own goal - life. The origins of the mattanza ritual are interesting. Maggio explains it in such a way that keeps you wanting to know more.
I also enjoyed the fact that the book is not only about the mattanza. It is also about Maggio's stay in Favignana -- the people she met, her relationship with them and the fishermen. After reading the book, I felt as if I knew and understood the fishermen who perform the mattanza.
If you're looking for a different book on Italy, a place where classical mythology is said to have occurred, a book filled with interesting natural history facts, culture, and sprinkled with a little romance, "Mattanza" is the book for you!
Whatever way you cut it, this is a passionate jewel of a book. I can't imagine how many drafts the author wrote to distill her years of meticulous note-taking. Every chapter has a photo or drawing, a delightful touch that only suggests the thousands of such shots she must have taken.
Maggio's sensuous observations of the island, her candid personal impressions, and her subtle political commentary will make you think -- and sweat.

Pros: Have been able to find everything I've needed quickly. (Chain rule, logarithms, conditional probability, general solution to quadratic equations.) The explanations are terse but clear.
Cons: Crowed typography, could have used more margins, maybe a choice that was made for this reprint. Sections are number x.y-z, makes it hard to notice when the index refers to a range: x.y-za-zb. The index doesn't always lead directly to the desired section, for instance there is no entry for chain rule, but differentiation takes you right there.
Unfortunately, I'm already through most of the classes where I could have made good use of this book, but for those starting out, this might be a handy reference.
