Hubbard Street.
Forty years ago, while walking,in Chicago, I discovered that I had turned on to Hubbard street, and encountered a used book store, tended by a very strange, and extremely hostile couple, who very reluctantly, allowed me to walk out of their store, with an entire shelf of Fra Elberts books,in excellent condition.beautifully bound at his Roycrofters institute, in East Aurora; One of the books was "Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book",and it was worth far more than the price I paid for the entire lot;In fact, one item (About Chief Red Cloud) is priceless; I highly reccomend that everyone buy this book if only for that one essay, and if you can get it along with his "A Message To Garcia"by all means do so. The wisdom in those two items,is sorely needed today.

1923 version of elbert hubbard's scrap book
I was given this book from my mother. My mother got the book from one of my fathers great aunts. It was published in 1923. I have yet to read the entire book after 5 years of owning it. The reason is you have to read certain passages and think of what they really meant.

I actually use this book to relax, when ever times are hard, and i need a change of pace. There are writtings from every great person that wrote or spoke up untill the time Mr. Hubbard died. This is a very inspirational reading. I recommend this book to everyone.

Food for the Soul
This book as well as The Notebook of Elbert Hubbard, are my 2 favorite books in my entire library. They contain the inspired and inspiring selections of Elbert, gathered during a lifetime of discriminating reading for his own use. They contain mottoes, epigrams, short essays, passages, and orphic sayings. They are coined from a life of love, laughter and work by a man who achieved greatly in literature, art, philosophy, business, and life. I highly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with the human spirit

This brief story tells you exactly how to be excellent!
This is a lament that people cannot be counted on to get a job done. One man could; and he did deliver a message to Garcia, no matter what. The whole book was written in a matter of an hour or so and has sold tens of millions of copies. I have used it to inspire a weak employee and am considering giving it as a present to my best 150 clients.

It's not Outdated
It's one of the inspire book i ever read. I strongly believe it's not outdated, in fact the clear message is very relevant in today world. I.e. Good manager give a clear Objective (E.g. Send a message to Garcia), and the person in charge should not giving excuse, no delay, and no "blaming why me". Ask question if there is any thing you need further explaination. (In Rowan's case, no) Then Figure it out on how to accomplish it.
Now day, there are too many people like to say this is not accomplishable and that not workable without having a try, without even "a Think". Many are giving too many excuses.

In addition, personally i think, this book is not only should be given by employer to employee, employer himself also should learn the lesson. I.e. One of the reason that Rowan can successfully deliver the message is because, His "employer", after given the objective, They fully delegate the task to Rowan, They did not care for the detail, They did not pretend to be smart to teach Roman on how to do it, They did not interfere, They trust Rowan, and give Rowan all the neccessary authority to make decision. Just imagine if all the important decision that Rowan make have to get approval first then only can respond. Do you think The Message can be successafully delivered?
I hope Employer also have to bear this in mind before blaming your employee for not that responsible and self-motivate as Rowan. Think first. Think do you really trust your staff, Think do they have all the neccessary authotiry to make decison, think that did you did your job good enough as a employer...?

Furthermore, ensure the Objective that you give is meaningful to your employee, let your employee have that kind of feeling of important. Sure when Rowan recieve the task, in his mind he would say this :" WOW, this seem chanllenging, this task is important, i must accomplish it otherwise we would lose the battle. And they are giving this such a important task to me, they trust me, I must do it RIGHT!"
Right?

Finally, Don't forget Positive feedback or recognising that President give to Rowan. Remember, People will only doing things for two main simplified reason, i.e. pain and pleasure. This also a part which should we learn. Off cause i doesn't mean Rowan doing all this just for his own pleasure, but at least it's a part of it.

Loyalty Pays
Reading and discussing Hubbard's small classic, "A Message To Garcia" should be a pre-requisite for anyone about to work anywhere for a boss. Much is written about leaders, and this book helps to fill the huge gap in what is written for and about followers. The few minutes it takes to read this book could change the rest of your life. I first read it back in 1985 and I re-read it frequently.

Hubbard's inspiration for his "preachment" was an obscure but important event in the 1898 Spanish-American War. President McKinley needed someone to quickly deliver a message to an insurgent general somewhere in the jungles of Cuba. An army officer was recommended and McKinley personally handed the message to this officer with the mission to deliver the "message to Garcia." This officer's unhesitating acceptance of his mission with no superfluous questions and his subsequent completion of the mission is Hubbard's definition of an invaluable subordinate.

Hubbard's lessons of initiative (doing the right thing without being told) and loyalty to yourself, your boss, and your organization (doing the right thing when told only once) are timeless and well told. Hubbard spoke to all leaders and subordinates when he wrote, "It is not book-learning young men need, nor instruction about this and that, but a stiffening of the vertebrae which will cause them to be loyal to a trust, to act promptly, concentrate their energies: do the thing -- "Carry a message to Garcia.""

A chatty, old-fashioned travel log
Some of these old books are so much more fun than newer, dry travel logs to read! The author gives brief accounts of visiting the homes of famous writers: George Eliot, Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Wm.E. Gladstone, J.M.W.Turner, Jonathan Swift, Victor Hugo, Wm.Wordsworth, W.M. Thackery, Charles Dickens, Oliver Goldsmith, Shakespeare. The 1895 Putnam ed. (366 pgs.) has a blue cloth cover with gold lettering & design, gold on top edge, and is illus. with black & white etchings of each famous man.

DMX FROM DA HOOD
This book is the worse book I have ever read. You obviously have no life if you want to read it. The only reason why I read it is because it was for a school project.

Patriots Will Weep
Just as did DMX from Wyoming, I read this book for school ... in the 6th grade ... and as an extra credit. I remember it very well since my mother had a first edition ... a precious item to be sure. I was very excited at that time about military genre novels. Like a lot of boys in the 1950's I had family members who served, were wounded or were killed in World War II. I started reading and by the time I finished I was crying. Weeping in pain is a more apt description. Have you ever seen a 6th grade boy of today weep in agony and desparation? I wanted to build a time machine so I could go back and tell them all "Don't do that to him, he just screwed up one little time ... he didn't mean to say what he said ..." I went to the library, which in those days required a 2 hour bus trip ... and tried to find out everything I could about Naval Courts Martial and history and, and, and ... oh my , everything I could to try to go back and save him. But guess what, Friends and Neighbors, I discovered that this was a piece of fiction ... can you imagine my relief? But wait! I went to my 6th grade teacher, Mister Hively, who had returned from Tarawa with one eye, one foot and terrible scars. Mister Hively, the hero ... whose one eye leaked tears when I told him everything I had done after I had finished reading the book. We talked about the fictional message and he asked me "do you think this can happen now in 1956?" The McCarthy era had just ended and of course I knew nothing about the message of the book in modern terms. The message .... the message of Patriotism ... not the "patriotism" of an extremist truck bomber or a sheet wearing cross-burner, but the simple love for Our Country. It today's mirror you could extrapolate to the Kurdish refugees, to the Sudanese, to the Central Americans, to all of the groups of people who are exiled for one reason or another. Matter of fact, you can look at the comments of a previous reviewer, DMX up there in Wyoming, and see a young man exiled from his wonderful country. DMX, a victim of our modern society, has been exiled just as surely as the that young man in 1830 .. exiled by a president who parses the definition of sexual contact; exiled by the school system who filter and water down and massage and marginalize the learning process; exiled by a commercialized multi-media system promoting mediocracy. Poor thing, DMX is adrift just as surely as was that Patriot who sailed the seas for 50 years Without A Country.

A little-known classic
Please ignore "DMX from Da Hood." It is obvious from his grammatical error (it should be "worst" book, not "worse" book) that he does not appreciate a wonderfully moving tale of a dark period in American history. "The Man Without A Country" is a quick read but one that will stay with you for a long time. Highly recommended.

Very inspirational and motivating
This book was printed in the 19th centruy and distributed to the entire Russian and the entire Japanese army. Because of this the book was the most printed in the 19th century! It tells of a Lt. in the US Army in 1898 who responded to the President's call for a courier to deliver a message to Garcia, the leader of the anti-Spanish frces in Cuba. The Message was delivered with no hesitation or any further questions asked of the President or the Staff. As a result Spain was pushed out of Cuba and Cuba became independent. U.S. also got the territories of the Philipines, Guam, Puerto Rico, etc. The book marvels at the dedication to duty of the Lt. and his abililty to complete the task --no matter what the circumstances.
