Great it seems.
I have read through it and it provides a great step-by-step tutorial on building a Gloucester Schooner model in a bottle. Includes other plans as well. I haven't built a ship yet, but I have bought all of the inexpensive materials that he has suggested. Most of them I already had in my home. Recommended.

Highly recommended
This book is probably the most complete guide for anyone desiring to build or who builds bottleships. It contains not only the know-how of building ships-in-bottles, but provides plans for many models to build; tools to use; how to mount your model; nautical terminology; how to photograph a model; a list of the known bottleship Associations throughout the world and three pages listing the names of books in seven different languages on the subject of bottled ships and/or objects. Jack Hinkley President, Ships-In-Bottles Association of America

The perfect book for all levels of bottled ship modelers.
Don Hubbard's book is an excellent reference guide for all levels of bottled ship builders. The book includes step-by-step instructions to a specific model witch teaches the novice modeler the essential skills of the craft. For the experienced modeler, Hubbard has included sections on various mast-stepping techniques and helpful tools. Tools and materials are described in detail and many of the useful tools have directions on how to make them out of normal household items. Of particular interest to me was the section on prepairing plans from a picture of a ship, giving the builder the means to build an accurate scale model of virtually any ship. The book also includes several plans for other models of various types of boats which will surely keep even the most industrious modeler busy for quite some time. Overall a supurbly written, useful and friendly companion to any ship bottler.

Fresh new recipies, beautiful artwork, helpful instructions.
Having lived in California for over 50 years, I have loved the offerings of the sea. Though I have an extensive collection of recipies, Don Hubbards are fresh and exciting. It seems, having read other reviews of this delightful book, that my favorites have been appreciated by others as well. Mussel sauce with linguini, spinach and sour cream, Baked potato stuffed with avacado and shrimp are at the top of my list. Don has many new ideas for the preparation of these exotic gifts. The pizza recipies are fun. The artwork is beautiful. I have had the pleasure of seeing Don's art work in local shows. I particularly appreciated the complete and enjoyable instructions as well as the stories. All in all, this is a fabulous book. I tend to reach for it every time I want to treat myself to a wonderful meal. A must in any kitchen!

Tasty Recipes for the Seafood Lover
If you are looking for new and exotic seafood recipes, then this is the book for you! With easy-to-understand directions a cook can learn how to clean and prepare the finest delicacies of the sea and enjoy the culinary delights of Don Hubbard's vast experience.

The book is beautifully illustrated with pictures that could well be framed for their quality. I particularly enjoyed the personal stories of the sea and learned a great deal about the sea creatures that often please my palate.

I would recommend this cookbook highly to anyone who loves exotic seafood.

Payne Hollow, Life on the Fringe of Society

a story of simple life with the land
This is a wonderful book about life outside of normal hustle and bustle of modern life. Harlan and his wife, Anna, lived in Payne Hollow, and spent their time living from the land and with the land. They built their home, tended their garden, fished the river, and lived their lives there. It is in some ways a beautiful love story that reminded me of what it would be like to be a castaway on a desert island. But in this case, one is castaway in the hills of Kentucky, on the Ohio river.

The book is really a journal of their lives there, and when reading it, one feels how simple yet full lives their lives were. From Harlan's rising early in the winter mornings to tend the goats, to the early passages about working by lantern light on simple tasks, to the way he wrote about the seasonal rhythms, I was taken with their story. I found that it was a tender book to read, and I found that the way they lived was so much more than the suburbanites. Harsher, perhaps, but more. The book has some sketches by Harlan, and some woodcuts. A great story.
