Excellent synopsis of the politics of breast cancer.
Who and what are we supposed to believe about breast cancer? That is exactly what this book is about. Although a little outdated now (needs Hoy's investigative journalism surrounding the politics of the recent approval of tamoxifen for breast cancer prevention, October 1998), it nevertheless provides an important background and framework for putting the BCPT and the entire politics of breast cancer into perspective. It is a consumer beware kind of book written from a Canadian view (making it very unique), laden with valuable information on breast cancer. A must read for all North American women over the age of 40. It must be my favourite most cherished book (probably because I have been doing breast cancer research since 1985). Hoy pulls no punches. Can't wait for the update on the BCPT!

By Way of Deception

If this book is all lies, then why is it banned in Israel?
This is a very poorly written book. The organisation is poor, the writing is sloppy, and the translation of technical terms from Hebrew is quite often inexact. But if you want to read a well-written book, go and search for Shakespear! This book was written by an un-happy ex-Mossad agent. It's not altogether obvious what parts of this book, if any, are true and what parts, if any, are false. But the book is morbidly fascinating, in that it describes the inner workings of an organisation about which there are hardly any "legitimate" ways of finding out. Especially interesting is the detailed description of the training that Mossad career officers undergo! So get the book, and read it, and judge for yourself. Keep in mind that this book is banned in Israel -- neither it nor its translation into Hebrew can be sold in bookstores in Israel. Now officials in Israel have claimed on numerous occassions that this book is all nonsense. This raises a basic question: If this book is nonsense, if what it talks about is ALL false, then why ban it?

Excellent and Gripping Book
This is a great book written by a man who put his life on the line inorder to let the world know how terrible the Mossad really is. He eloquently summarizes his life story, growing up as an ardent Zionist, climbing high in the Israeli military ranks, and finally becoming disillusioned after achieving the dream of many Israelis: joining the Mossad. He explains in great detail many of the ways, training techniques, and past operations of this ultra-secret "intelligence agency" that he was a part of for four years. If, as some people say, this book is not factual, why is it that most of the events are actually recorded in old newspapers, magazines, T.V. news, etc.? All you have to do is spend enough time and you can find for yourself the articles on Yehia Meshad, Jonathan Pollard, Sabra and Shatilla, the Fallashas, and so on. Offcourse the major difference is that Ostrovsky, as an insider, ties things together and goes into the details that we could never find in the news. Furthermore, why would the Israeli govt. and Jewish groups in the U.S. try to prevent this book from being published in the first place? Finally, I just heard that this book is out of print and banned in the U.S. now. If this is true, it is a shame. It just goes to show that Ostrovsky is right.

Surprising that both Ostrowski's books are effectivelybanned
Outstanding, true personal account of an honored Israeli officer, telling of gross misconduct at the highest levels of the most secretive agency within the Israeli government. This is the story of a man who fought for Israel's independence in 1948 and was specially selected to perform covert operations in defense of Israel, without regard for international law and borders. He is a passionate Zionist and maintained the code of silence until he saw many of the corrupt practices of top personnel. It is sad that many Jews view him as a traitor to Israel, when it seemed to be his goal to reign in the abuse of power of the country he loved so dearly. Question....Why is the well reviewed 1991 book, "By way of Deception" out of print? Why is the 1995 sequel also not available and out of print? I think it is to prevent Victor Ostrowski's compelling tale from getting into the mainstream of social thought. One last question, who else beside the Jewish Defense League, The Anti-defamation League and other such organizations have a motivation to use their influence to keep this story secret?

Expose at its Finest
Claire Hoy has certainly "picked all the meat off the bones" when it comes to the Senate of Canada and he definately sticks to the popular, and oftentimes ignorant, view of that institution. Not only does Hoy "expose" the "sordid, scandalous affairs" which supposedly occur in the Senate but he doesn't confine his particular point of view to modern Senators. Instead, Hoy has literally "dug up the dirt" on years of so-called corruption and his character attacks range from Sir John A. all the way to Eric Berntson. When it comes to his pursuit of the truth, I think Hoy needs to spend a little more time in the actual chamber and commitee rooms of the Senate and a little less time in the obviously brain-stifling National Archives, because he does not seem to realise that there are indeed benefits to the "red chamber".I admit, there are certain Senators who have tainted the reputation of the entire institution but need I remind Claire Hoy that a few members of his own profession have been found guilty of the exact same "crimes" (just because one rotten apple has soured, doesn't mean that the whole basket is destined for the trash). While he attacks almost every Senator since time immemorial, he seldom mentions those who perform their duties with honour and distinction and in the rare instances when he does, his praise seems to be turned into a vindictive attack on the other Senators, whom he views as lazy, corrupt old men. Furthermore, it is obvious that Mr. Hoy hasn't once complained about or written an article criticising GST and free trade (yeah right) because he harshly criticises Alan MacEachen (the very one who tried to hold the Mulroney government accountable for its actions). Wake up and smell the coffee Hoy! First of all, you damn the Senate for being a passive, "rubber stamp organisation" which allows legislation to be given assent without scrutiny and then you damn the very man who tried to stop these ruinous bills from being passed because he had the foresight to see their devastating effects on this country. What's more, you wrongfully convict him of patisanship in this regard and try to smear the reputation of a man who should be highly esteemed for what he accomplished during his tenure as the Senate's Leader of the Government. When push comes to shove, I would not be surprised Mr. Hoy, if you yourself accepted a place in the "partisan pleasuredome" because you are evidently so narrow minded, opinionated and self absorbed, that I can truly see you at your finest among the malignant, corrupt and scandalous people who according to you, have taken their rightful place in the "Hall of Shame".
