A helpful and inspiring book!
This book is a great book. Not only does it detail many teenagers who are making a difference, but it tells you how to do the same! This book will inspire teenagers to be an activist, and then tell them how to do it. A must-read for anyone who has ever wanted to make a difference.

Terrific!
This is a very cute children's book. It's about a boy who is being pressured into squishing an ant. It has a wonderful and creative dialogue between the ant and the boy. At the end it lets the reader decide whether the boy should squish the ant or not. It's very fun!

Using ANTS to teach diversity.
"Hey, Little Ant," by Phillip and Hannah Hoose is one of my favorite children's books. Based on a real-life experience the author had as he watched his toddler squishing ants one day, this book is as powerful a teaching tool as I've seen come along in a very long time. In this classic, a Kid threatens to squish the book's hero Ant and a clever dialogue ensues. Allowed to plead its case, the Ant explains to the boy that he, too, has a special reason for being. Through cleverly rhyming verse, set to musical notes if you'd rather sing it, the Ant tries to negotiate for its life, citing the "Golden Rule" to solidify its case. The beauty of this tale is that it ends with a dilemma: "what do you think that Kid should do?" Leaving it open-ended is a tremendous way to generate dialogue with children. It gives them the opportunity to think the problem through and offer problem-solving solutions; it serves to empower them by giving them a voice. At a time in our society when schools are reluctant to teach values through character education, along comes a little book with a powerful message. As a counselor, I used it to teach middle schoolers how to deal with the people who are ANTS in their lives - who might bite them with their words or try to poison them with their actions - focusing on characteristics we might need like Awareness, Negotiation, Tolerance and Sensitivity. I give "Hey, Little Ant" as many stars as it can get and more. Don't miss this one; you will NOT be disappointed!

Excellent open-ended book
This is an excellent book for all ages. I love that both the perspective of the ant and the boy is given. The best part of the book is the last page, when it is up to the "reader" on whether the boy should or should not squish the ant. This books allows for so much discussion because of it's open-ended ending! More books should be written with this type of ending!

Engaging and exciting for kids!
I'm an eighth grade U.S. history teacher. I have used this book in my classroom, and the kids love it. It brings important events in history alive for the students. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about individual stories in history.

Captivating Insight into U.S. History
My Middle School Special Day Class students were captivated and intrigued by each story we read together. Used as an introduction to specific eras in our history, these eyewitness stories provoked the students to ask questions, seek further information, and dive into their history lessons. There is such a long waiting list to borrow this book that I can only allow students to take it home overnight. This was the best twenty dollars I have ever spent on a classroom resource!

Wow...This Is What You Call EXCITING History!
When someone gave me this book as a sort of gift, I was kind of reluctant to read it. I mean, it looked like another one of those thick, boring biography collections that line the bookshelves in your social studies classroom. Was I ever wrong...I started reading this book, thinking I'd just read for a few minutes, and soon half an hour had gone by. Phillip Hoose has done a wonderful job of creating a book with dynamic young people throughout history that inspire us all. And he goes beyond telling about Phillis Wheatley...he tells about Anna Meyer, who played professional baseball during World War 2, John Tinker who boldly stood up for his rights to protest the Vietnam War, and the boys who played a crucial-yet-rarely-realized role as part of the crew on Columbus's voyage. So you think history's boring? Read this book and see it in a whole new light!
