Although not exactly entertaining, Hans Hollander's text about art in the early medieval period is informative and interesting. Hollander takes care to explain works such as the Spanish Apocalypse manuscript illuminations as well as overall styles of the period. While a lot emphasis is paid to the art work of the Carolingian and Ottonian Empires, not a lot of interest is devoted to the artwork of the Byzantines. Yet this book is great for anyone interested in researching medieval art in those years after the Roman Empire and before the Romanesque and Gothic styles became prominent.
