"Earth Stealers"-the REAL SUPERMAN!
I actually bought this when it was first released in 1988. It's just as good now, obviously, since it has been re-printed, and is still available. This is real Superman! No "Fabio" hair, no watered down powers. Clark Kent is, well, Clark Kent, not a "hip, slick and cool" yuppie. This is the Superman that flies through space and does amazing things, not the one who gets killed off by "Johnny-come-lately" no-brainer two bit villians. If you like the Superman, and don't think that improving him means changing his costume, identitiy, and powers rather than improving the stories (such as the way Frank Miller did with Batman), you'll likely enjoy this book. Excellent pre-"Doomsday" Superman! If you haven't bought it already, go ahead, you deserve it! I give it five stars(because six aren't a choice)!!

A great Superman story with a pre-Crisis feel.
I enjoyed this story because it really showed off Superman's power.

A great Superman story in an outer space setting.
This is a very entertaining story because Superman is challenged to find a way to free the planet Earth from captivity by extraterrestrial aliens. Superman's power is pushed to the limit, but this gives the reader a truly exciting look at what our hero can do if necessary. If you are a Superman fan or enjoy a good science fiction story with a super hero in it, than this book is a must read for you. It's definitely 5-star reading material.

A suberb example of comics reprinting
I had this wonderful, giant-size book many years ago, from a friend. It reprints the sunday pages about in the size they appeared in the '40s: in full color, not retouched, using the best scanner tecniques they had at that time. The art of Hogarth is in all his glory. If you have a chanche to buy this giant book, don't esitate! Great also for the introductory essays.

If you ever put clothes on
Making fabric look realistic requires knowing how it lays on figures and objects. As in all his books, Burne instructs with clear and beautifully drawn illustrations. They are easy to copy or use for reference. Although one would want to observe from life as well, this provides a fuller understanding to better enable the student to paint and draw clothes and draperies.

A huge step forward
I got this book about five years ago in an art store, and it's had a huge impact on my drawing. Making clothes respond naturally to a human body's shape and movement is one of the big challenges to artists, and this book gives tons of examples of different kinds of wrinkles caused by different movements and kinds of cloth. For example, compression wrinkles caused by stiff cloth which holds its shape and pipe organ drapery caused by heavy thick cloth such as a curtain. It's also very good for training your eye to notice things in real life, so that you can go beyond just the examples in the book. The illustrations are large and detailed and very clear. Even though the style's a little dated, the rules still apply. I'd recommend this to any aspiring artist.

Don't dismiss this as just for comic wanna bes
Whether you like his style or not, the lessons are great. These lessons could be applied to any style of art. Now I want more of his books. He explains how motions would pull wrinkles this way or that way.

Even though the book is about wrinkles and drapery, it has some brilliant studies in muscles. This is a great resource to have on any budding artist's shelves.

Excellent reference
This is a wonderful reference, like all his drawing books, for copying and observing the different positions of the hand. With over 300 outstanding drawings he demonstrates all manner of positions and expressions, while incorporating important insights about anatomy and structure. Important for drawing students on any level. Get all his books if you are interested in figure drawing.

Beyond words...
This book, like any instruction manual by Burne Hogarth, is beyond compare. He provides excellent instructions on technique and application. The samples are superb, and they offer outstanding reference for a multitude of illustrations. Two thumbs up!

Knowledge and emotion on the fingertips of every page.
I bought the book in order to gain a better insight on the movement of the hand. It was not untill I opened the pages that I found an entire world of intrege and emotion. I was lost in the form and I admired the shere power that lay within.

A collection of ERB short stories on Tarzan's early days
"Jungle Tales of Tarzan" is the sixth volume in the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs and pretty much goes back to the beginning for a collection of short stories set in the time when Tarzan still lived among the great apes. Tarzan has learned how to read from the books he has found and it is opening his young mind to new questions, like where do dreams come from and where he can confront Goro, the supreme being that is the moon. There is also the love triangle between Tarzan, his first love Teeka, and their rival Taug, as well as his adventures tormenting the people of the local Mbonga tribe. "Jungle Tales of Tarzan" is actually a nice companion volume to the original "Tarzan of the Apes," provide more depth and detail to the early years of the Lord of the Jungle. It also marks a coda to what we would now consider the original story arc of the Tarzan novels. Burroughs would write another 21 Tarzan novels but they would become increasingly formulaic. In many ways this is the last time we would see the original Tarzan; you can think of "Jungle Tales of Tarzan" as sort of being the "deleted scenes" from the original "Tarzan of the Apes" novel.

A large mistake
The customer review written here is about the ERB tarzan novel. All the used books being sold here are nothing but ERB tarzan novels. I put in the ISBN number and as you can see this is the jungle tales of Tarzan the big 10 by 13 book illustrated in comic book forum by the great Burne Hogarth not the tarzan novel by ERB. The people that wrote comments and the sellers of so called used copies are confused they are referring to a different book. I know I own the real one.

Great for aspiring comic-book artists!!
First, I have to point out that this is NOT an anatomy book. If you purchase this book as an anatomy book, you will be diasappointed. (you probably wanted "Dynamic Anatomy" by the same author)

This book focuses on drawing the human figure in dynamic poses. It offers many good techniques on foreshadowing, proportion, and balance. I found this book to be helpful within the first several pages. Hogarth provides ample description and explanation of his techniques.

I would not recommend this book to people who are more interested in fine-arts figure-drawing and life drawing, as this book is intended for drawing the human figure without a model. If you are interested in comic book art, illustrations, or other drawing that involves drawing dynamic scenes without a model, this book is a *wonderful* starting point.

And like any how-to-draw book, it is not an instant solution to all of your drawing problems. The only way to truly improve is by lots and lots of practice, but this book gives you great techniques to practice.

One of the greatest advanced figure drawing books ever
This is one of the greatest, most comprehensive guide to drawing figures in complicated poses and angles. Most people find this book to be too complicated. It's true that the book is very scholarly and requires a thorough study. It's not a how-to book for hobbyists and kids that guides people through figure drawing step-by-step. To get most out of it, one must already be fairly experienced at drawing the figure in more common poses and very committed to learning more. The book is an intellectual collection of techniques and methods to solving *problems* that arise in figure drawing.

I purchased Hogarth's Dynamic Figure Drawing book along with the other books in his Dynamic series almost a decade ago. Since then, I have been studying the books and learning the methods slowly but surely. The books take a great deal of practice and dedication to master the knowledge contained within them. I still feel that I have much to learn from these books, despite the number of times I have referred to them through these years. However, I feel that it is because of the knowledge gained from these books that I have grown so much as an artist over the past years. I only regret that Hogarth died before I could sign up for any of his classes.

secrets of figure drawing from imagination revealed
This is a must buy book for artists, animators comic book artists,or enthusiasts of figure drawing, who have dreamed of drawing foreshortened human figuresand human figures in action from memory/imagination. This book doesnt contain realistic anatomy, the author uses his own verson of human anatomy toexplain his methods andprinciples, these have to be taken as tools only and not rules. But after you have practised from this book hard enough you will find that your life drawing speed and skill is miles further than when you started,i also recommend the other books by burne hogarth ,dynamic anatomy, drawing dynamic hands, dynamic heads, dynamic light and shade and dynamic wrinkles and drapery.Only one word of caution its very easy to get influenced by burne hogarths work, and your work might start looking like a clone of his.So the key is get inspired not influenced ,keep your own style and use this book to add to that.

An all-around great book
Dynamic Anatomy is an excellent book. It teaches all about human anantomy. I escpecially reccomend it if you have some trouble with hands. The book containes lots of detailed drawing primarily for the male figure. Though sometimes the angles of of his figures are a bit weird(sometimes you just can't see were all the muscles are)it still gives you a great visuall concept. I also highly recommend Dynamic Figure Drawing another one of his books.

A worthy reference...
Being an aspiring comic book artist, I found Burne Hogarth's reference to be invaluable in the field of figure drawing.

Like most anatomy books, Dynamic Anatomy illustrates the relevant muscle groups in Hogarth's inimitable style. Unlike some anatomy books, however, this doesn't have skeletal references which most art schools would instruct as the basis of figure drawing.

Moreso, he provides some tips to effectively draw each major part of the anatomy, plus the discussion about foreshortening towards the end of the book is worth as much as the majority of the content.

Still, for what its worth, I found the book pretty well done and would recommend it to folks who do figure drawing (especially in the illustration of characters with superhuman physiques).

anatomy with an attitude
burne hogarth was not only a good draughtsman but also one of the most insightful with regard to the history and science of drawing. to appreciate this book one has to have an open mind(which for an artist is the only way to be)then you would see that he has learned human anatomy quite thouroughly then altered it to suit his line of work (drawing tarzan and the likes) and simultaneously he has also used this derivation of his to teach drawing to his students.this is not a realistic anatomy book which gives you a documentary reference for the human figure, but its a book which simplifies realistic anatomy for amatuers so that they get over their fear of anatomy drawing and later study anatomy just as the author did and make his or her own style.he has stylised and simplified all muscles and altered or even merged some.one of the attractions of this book is the section called the nine principles of foreshortening. this book as with hogarths other books are products of a lifetime of drawing comics and teaching, the author makes it very clear that the figures in the book are his ideal (which neednt be yours)he strongly recommends you to do your own research and not use this book as an encyclopaedia.i have heard a lot of criticism of hogarths style, that it is too strong and will influence other artists to become mere carbon copies,to refute this i must tell you that michelangelo copied and studied works of massacio, ghirlandiao, donatello, but ended up better than any of them.drawing is highly dependent on master pupil tradition, in this age where there are no great masters living in our neighbourhood(unlike michelangelo) we have to look up to the books by people like hogarth . as a teacher hogarth ranks as one of the best along with robert beverly hale, george bridgman and paul richer.

Ok for measurements but not for technique
Burne Hogarth takes you through his technique of measuring human proportions. Beware, at times you will feel less like an artist and more like a mathmatician. Hogarths work is better suited to my sculpture than my drawing as he tends to show all the planes in his work as very defined surfaces. For a beginner trying to draw you can do a lot better.

Excellent!
I absolutely love this book. I learned a lot from it in a short period of time. Most definately I would recomend it to anyone who has an idea about drawing that is interested in drawing portraits.

Not for the weak of heart...
This book is excellent! This is first and foremost a book on drawing no fat, face composition "blanks" of human face types. This is the most complete basic face composition book out there. Changing this into a certain person comes later on. If you're looking for a book on how to draw certain people, this is not a book for you. If youre merely looking for in depth info on aging this is not a book for you. If you're merely looking for a book on how to draw faces simple and easy, this is not a book for you. But if you have the desire to know what the form is really like, not just lines, this is the book for you. The illustrations are to be understood, not to be copied. This book is for understanding, not remembering. It's logic, not like a phone number. An instant classic.
