an intellectual feast!
This is an inspiring collaboration between a passionate amateur scholar and his professional scholar friends. How delightful to read something that isn't dumbed down. The analysis and induction is nicely supplemented by the "Hymn to Demeter." Much for the brain to chew on!

Wasson et al's revelations of the complexity of the myths that surrounded the Eleusian mysteries are fodder for hours upon hours of thought play about the foundations of our culture today.

Important argument, beautifully produced book
The authors of 'Road to Eleusis' - they include Albert Hofmann, the discoverer of LSD, and Gordon Wasson, the white man who in 1957 revealed the continued existence of the pre-Columbian sacred-mushroom rite to the non-Mexican Indian world - argue that a water-soluble alkaloid contained in ergot, a tiny fungus which attacks grains and grasses, was the principal psychoactive ingredient of the 'kykeon', the sacred potion drunk before the celebration of the Mysteries of Eleusis by those awaiting initiation. The philological and psycho-pharmacological argument of 'Road to Eleusis' is compelling but to get the most from the book, read it in combination with 'Eleusis: Archetypal Image of Mother and Daughter' by Karl Kerenyi, a disciple of Carl Jung, which provides an introduction to the history of Eleusis and contains a psychological study of the Mysteries.

In pre-Classical times, it is likely that almost the entire population of Athens walked the fifteen-mile distance to Eleusis at harvest time every year in order to drink the 'kykeon' and experience the sense of the mythic reunion of Persephone, the Daughter, with Demeter, the Mother who taught men how to plant seeds and reap the fruit. The Christ, the draw in the psychological game of chess between the Hellenised Middle East and Israel, speaks distantly but clearly of Eleusis in John 12: 20-24 and Cicero, the Roman philosopher, author and statesman who coined the phrase 'bread and circuses' to damn the spectacular politics of his time, was an initiate.

Iktinos, architect of the Parthenon, also designed the Telesterion, the classical-period temple of the Mysteries of which only broken columns survive. However, scattered throughout 'Eleusis' by Kerenyi are bits and pieces of the psychological vocabulary of the Mysteries which with the help of ancient Greek and Indo-European comparative etymological dictionaries allow a reconstruction of the mind of the initiate. For example, 'tele', from 'telos', the full circle, the crown - today, we hear it many times every day in connection with technology; however, at Eleusis 'tele' had a sacral meaning.

Eleusis was to religion in Athens what democracy was to Athenian politics: essential.

'Road to Eleusis' and 'Eleusis: Archetypal Image of Mother and Daughter' - read both; and when in Greece, don't miss Eleusis, 20 miles south of Athens on the mainland across the water from the island of Salamis, open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. except Monday when the site is closed.

A powerful document on attaining Greek wisdom
If other books are dynamite, this is nuclear. It documents how the Mystai at Eleusis became Epoptes, a standard rite of passage for all the famous Greek minds we seek to understand. Full understanding is not possible without initiation such as is outlined in this volume. Eleusis is at the end of a line of mystical experience that goes back to 5000 BCE. Is is not so much that the Mystery of Eleusis is revealed, as that it points the sacred way how to unravel the mystery of our own existence. The Greeks knew, and if you do as they did, you can. Wasson tells us what the Greeks did.

My Friend Carl Jung
Edward Hoffman has made Carl Jung available to us all. He has taken the heart and soul of Jung's written insight and presented it to us in easily understood and digestable aphoristic-like paragraphs that reveal the awesome visionary genius of this great psychologist.

Editing a thinker like Jung is no small task. Like a sculpture, Hoffman's editing brilliance is revealed in his astute knowledge of cutting away the unnecessary material leaving us only with the beautiful form and substance of the work. He has managed to dish up to the reader the wonderful beauty of Jung's truly impressive and liberating wisdom.

This is the best introduction to the work of Carl Jung that has ever been written. An awesome collection of psychological insight, well ordered and easy to read. I give this book my highest reccomendation. It is destined to become a classic.

Insights from Carl Jung
"The Wisdom of Carl Jung" brings together highly readable excerpts from the extensive writings of one of the world's most influential psychologists, logically arranged into such themes as Creativity and Genius, Understanding the Human Psyche and Education, Social Change and World Improvement. A comprehensive biographical essay at the start of the book provides perspective on Jung's far-reaching ideas on mysticism, sexuality, religion, fantasy, successful living and other topics directly relevant to our own emotional and personality growth.

Wisdom Is Yours For The Reading - This Book Does It
A mesmerizing read, we are served delicious slices of Carl Jung's brilliance in the most palatible of ways. Coming away hugely enriched, while not bloated, you will recognize, as did I, that no other book on Jung has been offered in such a simple, yet exquisitely profound, way. Frankly, I could not put it down. And, when I had concluded my reading, I yearned for more and more still. You will too. This is a feast for all hungering for the merging of mind, body, heart and spirit. Treat yourself today.

Detailed facts are stated concurrently. On hand source from both conflicted sides!

A blow by blow account of the Battle of Saipan
A blow by blow account of the Battle of Saipan. A bloody story written with the life and death of U.S. and Japanese soldiers, sailors, civilians, as well as the indigenous people of the mariana islands, the Chamorro and Carolinians. The book will hopefully remind us of the price of war. Least we forget.

Great tips for tracking anyone you can't find
While this book is specifically marketed towards women who are trying to find their ex-husbands in hopes of getting them to pay child support, the tips in this book could be useful for just about anyone trying to find a lost relative, friend, ex-boyfriend or girlfriend, etc. There is a detailed list of agencies and businesses to search, most providing addresses of lost people for free or for a very small fee. The book provides lists of all the information you need, from a social security number for some searches to a phone number or simply a last name for others. While there are probably other ways to locate this information and the book may not contain every last shred of info out there, this is a good detailed guide to start with - and it may be ALL you need.

Finally, an alternative to the Fosomax party line
The only publication I've seen that doesn't slavishly recommend fosomax as the only way to reverse osteoporosis. I was heartened to see a positive review of this book from a physician on Amazon.com, because when I mentioned these authors' recommendation of calcium plus ipriflavone at a lecture by a local internist, he dismissed it out of hand (and out of ignorance of its existence) as "one of those rumors that fly around the Internet." The only problem is, how do you find a physician who is willing to help you try this regimen, which apparently is far safer than Fosomax? The authors do not explain how to find a nutritionally oriented doctor in a world of simplistic, cookie-cutter, prescription-pad, one-solution-for-all medicine.

I feel compelled to recommend it to all of my patients.
As a physician, I found this book to be very informative and well written and does a great job of explaining exactly what is causing the bone tissue to lose calcium and therefore bone mass as we age. The book also explains how calcium and other minerals and supplements exert their effect on the bone. As I said before, I strongly recommend this book for all women, regardless of age, if you have an interest in preventing or treating this very common condition.

HUNTING FOR A CONCLUSION TO HUNTING WARBIRDS
Author Hoffman did well in bringing the Kee Bird (B-29) renovate-to-fly story to the reader. His vivid character descriptions made one feel he was in a smoke filled, "expat" barroom alive with dreams and deals. However much like the Kee Bird herself, Mr. Hoffman's book failed to clear the runway and fly the reader to a satisfying landing. After the Kee Bird tale the author lapsed into a meandering style as he wrote of hohum tell-me-about-yourself visits with vintage aircraft collectors and relatively mundane (cf. the Kee Bird) aircraft recovery ops. Additionally, as noted by another reviewer, if you are a student of vintage aircraft you already know of the Hoffman tales via PBS, Discovey, and aeronautical periodicals.

Disintegrated, formless
Piston-engined aircraft of WWII are among the most fascinating and important artifacts of the 20th century, part of some of the most intriguing history of war and humanity that affected millions directly and indirectly. It is not surprising that they evoke passion and obsession.
This book attempts to describe the passion and obsession, but its disjointed, episodic and disintegrated form works against it and the technical errors are annoying. Reviewer Collins (see his review) correctly identifies the core problem: the author does not seem to have considered his audience(s). If he's writing for knowledgeable aviation enthusiasts, his lack of depth, poor research and many errors are a turnoff. If he's writing for non-flyers, he doesn't provide enough background information on the many wonderful flight museums and collectors around the world to frame the subject adequately (his superficiality about, say, Kermit Weeks, is a huge disappointment, as just one glaring example). If he's writing for readers who enjoy literature, his lack of polish is a disappointment--much of the book reads like a first draft. It seems that Hoffman's approach to flying is skewed to the gee-whiz and away from the magnificent, mysterious realities of aviation.
Offering credentials like AIR & SPACE and SMITHSONIAN doesn't induce confidence in the reader. Both these publications often use materials from staff or stringers that are deeply disappointing and too often read like the work of somewhat talented amateurs, matched by editorial positions that seem to be issued--without justification--ex cathedra. If Hoffman had written for AVIATION WEEK or FLIGHT JOURNAL one could be sure of its quality.
If some genuinely competent pilot-writer could approach this subject--someone like, say, Walter Boyne or Richard Bach--it would result in an important historical document with breadth, depth and authenticity. Such a work is urgently needed. Sadly, HUNTING WARBIRDSA is not that book.

Read the story...
I think this book was terriffic. Of course there are going to be some mistakes in the technical areas of the planes...the author never claimes to be an expert of every part of every plane that is covered...get over it. The book lets everyone have a small taste of a hobby (or addiction) that isn't available to eveyr person. I'd love to own a ME109, but can't. I like to read about the salvage and saving of these wonderful machines, and I think this book does a marvelous job of doing that. If you are reading to get a 110% account of airplane facts, buy a manual. If you want a story of a dying part of American history and culture, read this book.
