Gorilla stories!
Like the other review on this page from Utah, this book was my all time favorite as a kid. Julius the gorilla! As a kid I appreciated the neat pictures. Their colors and the tone I'd feel from them, plus the dialog between Julius and Davy, was always a happy time whenever I spent time with the book. And really, isn't happy just what time with a book should be? The unusual name Julius also drew me into its pages.

Julius
This was one of my favorite books as a child and one of the first I could read by myself. I am expecting my first child and can hardly wait to read it to her. Julius has many great adventures when he leaves the jungle to become a circus star. It keeps kids attention because of the large print and wonderful pictures.

A good beginner!
Thunderhoof is a great beginner book! The book has great descriptors, pictures and plot. Thunderhoof is a cute story that makes you fall in love with the horse, you get sad when the horse does and you are happy when he is happy. If you are looking for a great book for story time or whenever this is the book for you.

Great book for the new reader in your house
I am a college student right now who volunteers at a local elementary school. I am doing a reading system with them and this is their favorite book to read. It is written for k-1st grade level and the topic of the book relates to what children go through when they move into a new neighborhood. It also teaches the children to make new friends. Freddy is the main character in this book and he tries to find new friends until he finally meets some boys at the park who are playing baseball and they let him play with them. I recommend this book to any family who is trying to start their child towards the reading path.

Syd Hoff is perhaps the finest childrens author around.
This story is great for teachers to read on the first day of school. The illustrations are simple yet compelling. It is also a great book for a teacher to read when a new student arrives. It can be read over and over again and never loses it's appeal. Syd Hoff's simple nature of writing inspires young people to read.

Charming Addition to Mr. Hoff's Danny & the Dinosaur Series
Danny's big Jurassaic age pal is back for another adventure. Danny returns to the museum and takes his friend the dinosaur to summer camp where they experience a typical day in the life of a camper. Mr. Hoff's has hit his mark again. Danny and the dinosaur go to camp offers a clear and simple presentation of the kinds of values we should all strive for. The dinosaur potentially a creature of fear, is gentle, noble and considerate. Values such as acceptance of those unlike ourselves, sharing, participation and friendship are expressed with simple eloquence in both word and illustration. While meant for early readers, the story is engaging for all ages.

This book may also help allay the fear of detachment experienced by many children prior to attending their first summer in camp.

Grizzwold can live with me!
Grizzwold was a good book written by Syd Hoff. The story was about a huge bear named Grizzwold. He lived in the forest. The men came and cut down all the trees for paper. Grizzwold looked in the city zoo and circus. He found his home in the national park. I recommend this book because it is funny and sad. My favorite part was when Grizzwold went to the dance. The people thought he was wearing a costume. I was happy when he found a home.

Happy Birthday, Danny and the Dinosaurs
The print type in this book is larger enough for a beginner reader to point to an not lose there place. My son enjoys reading this story as much as I did when I was his age.

The life of the imagination
My 5-year-old loved this book. The first time through was especially enjoyable as he tried to figure out whether Harry's horse was real or not. This book is perfectly suited to its target audience, who are at that age where the line between the real and the imaginary is sometimes blurred and where pretending is part of any happy day. My son also liked resolving the question of whether Harry's horse was real by reading to the end of the book. Definitely a winner!

For any kid who's ever had a day where nothing goes right!
I was in 2nd grade when I checked this book out at the library when I went there with my Brownie troop. Actually I spent my whole library time being undecisive about what book I wanted and there was this table full of reject books (ones kids decided they didn't want to check out afterall) and I grabbed one as I headed for the checkout desk and it was this book. I think this was the first book I ever checked out on my library card... I really didn't care about books at the time and when I got home I read it with my mom and turned out I loved it! I could not imagine why any kid would decide not to check it out! It is similar to that book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.

Size Doesn't Matter; It's How You Play the Game
In this 45-paged illustrated children's story, Harold is the shortest baseball player on his little league team. He rarely gets to play because of his size, and his teammates aren't very sympathetic towards him. But in the last important game of the season, he's called in as a replacement, in which he finally gets to use his small size to his advantage.

Just like how Harold used other short baseball players in the Baseball Hall of Fame as role models, other young readers (age 4 - 8) can read this story and find encouragement in its lesson: that size doesn't matter; it's how you play the game that counts.

I liked the part about the little mouse outsmarting the cat
I liked this book because the mice got away from the cat and also when the story was almost over the 24 mice were dancing and the little mouse was still eating the cheese.
