I am about to purchase this book. I saw the HARDBOUND version in a book store and was very impressed. The paperback version is only 36 pages so I imagine it can't be of the same quality. Each of the pictures in the HB version appears as an actual photo -- glossy with bright colors. I compared this to "London from the air" by Hawkes and that book is very well done. However, this book has a good mix of close ups, land-based shots and shots from the air. I just spent 9 months in London and this book will be our "coffee table" memory of the trip.

Great Book!
What a beautiful book. I was given this as a present for my birthday and I love it. It has pages of photo-quality pictures which take you right to the streets of London. Its a great book if your planning a trip to England this summer-the pictures inspire you to stroll London's streets. The author has captured the magic of London in all its diversity. A wonderful gift for you or someone you love.

spectacular Namibia
An incredible photography book!!!! Hoberman's photos of the landscape, widelife, architecture, and people do justice to the beauty of Namibia. Having traveled through Namibia, I wanted to find a photography book which captures the beauty of the sights I saw. This is the book.

Hoberman's photography is wonderful!
After returning from three weeks in South Africa I can attest that the photos and extended captions provide a real sense for the feel of the country. He has a knack for providing images that as tourists we may miss. All his books are beautiful - he has all the shots we are frantically trying to capture on film.

Beyond the photos, the quality of the book is astounding. The paper is of an extremely high quality and the photos are reproduced beautifully. A truly great coffee table book and conversation piece!

Beautiful photos but is it a tribute to the people?
There are about 32 pictures total each of which seem like they were photos pasted onto the pages. That's one of the reasons I bought the book. The photos and the way they were printed are beautiful.

On the other hand, the text range from bad to average. Some of it has barely a connection to the photo and many have little to do with people.

I understand only a limited number of pictures can be included in the book but since Hoberman is an accomplished aerial photographer, I have to ask where are aerial pictures of buildings in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens? Where is the Holland Tunnel? These are places I associate with ordinary New Yorkers (and their commuting neighbors).

A beautiful, elegantly produced tribute
This lovely tribute to the city of New York, dedicated to the innocents who were so cruelly murdered in the September 11 attacks on the US, is a moving, heartfelt ode to the greatest of American cities. The photography and production values of this book are incredible beyond the ability of mere words to describe. The text is moving without being cloying or sappy, and adds to the photography without overpowering it. This book also includes several photographs of the Twin Towers that were not included in the Hobermans' hardcover edition, "New York", a massive 160+ page book that is well worth purchasing. I highly recommend "New York: A Tribute to the City and its People" for those who want to remember the Big Apple the way it was. And will be again...
