A Diamond in the Rough
Sid Hite expertly weaves comedy, romance, and Americana in this novel. It is a book that can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. The characters are truly colorful, and Hite's command of the English language is unique. Check it out!

Dither Farm: an excellent book with great character!
Dither farm is truely a work of art. The simple folk in this book are both laid-back and witty. It's no wonder with names like Flea Jenfries. Such a lavishly discripitve book has never been written. I storgly reccomend this book, I assure you it will become quite well thumbed.

A wonderful adventure
I thought this book was an exciting story. It is definitely a page turner. If you like stories with runaways hiding in the mountains, this book is for you. It was set in 1969, which makes it even better since there aren't very many modern appliances like TV to get in the way of the plot. This story gave me this feeling which I can't quite explain, but the feeling was wonderful. I am talking too much, so I will leave you to decide for yourself if you want to read this book, although anyone in middle school or high school would definitely like it if they like adventures and reading.

Review from an 8th graders point of view
I think this book is suppurbly writen and is great for any one who likes reading strong, gripping books. The auther does a wounderful job of flowing through the stages of someone who has lost a loved one. Great for young Adults.

Stories like this live on in your heart.
Sid Hite has created a cast of characters you would want to know. He brings you into the story masterfully, makes you care for each and every person in the story, makes you hope for the best in their lives. His descriptions of the time in which the story takes place, the people, the places and events, pull you into the story and don't let you out, even when the tale is "finished". Stories like this live on in your heart. I especially liked his description of a hurricane which moved inland, and how it affected the weather miles away, and how that in turn has such a profound affect on the lives of each of the characters. A wonderfully written tale. I am looking forward to future tales. ---Geoffrey C. Thomas

Not just an average story about a misbehaved boy
At first I was not really interested in reading this book but after the first few chapters I got involved. It is such an amazing tale of a boy who gets off track but with hard work and determination learns some valuable lessons. I found the relationship of the boy and the farmhands very interesting. And also the relationship with Rebecca. I wish the book continued so I could see what became of that. Overall this is a great book for students to see how a wrong can make a right.

A Hole in the World Book Report
A Hole in the World by Sid Hite is about a 15-year-old boy named Paul Shackleford. He lies and is sent to spend the summer on the farm of distant relatives in rural Virginia. At the farm, with a greeting nip at his hindquarters he is introduced to Einstein, a remarkable dog that will play a significant role in his summer. He learns that Einstein belonged to a former employee who committed suicide. Paul also comes to realize that all who knew him revered Hennley. Ada and Hargrove Vallencourt, as well as their hardworking crew, welcomed Paul into farm labor. The teen holds his own, not only in terms of the physical labor, but also in blending with the vagaries of the various residents. He later reflects on the genuineness of the people here compared to his friends at home. Throughout the story, the possibility of a specter, that of Hennley Gray, intervenes. Paul and his new friend Rebecca later conclude that maybe they are all haunting Hennley's soul rather than the other way around. This was a very good book. It was slow at the beginning but then it picked up.

VERY ENTHRALLING
Ya know, this book is fascinating. Not in the usual sense. It kept me reading; I couldnt oput it down. The characters and meaning are deep. A must read for anyone!!

A great mix between fantasy and real life
Lydia Swain lives in a country called Korasan. She lives in the countryside next to the Jeefwood Forest. Jeefwoods are very important to Korasan because they provide lots of things including wood to carve. Her cousin Antoinette lives in a city called Valerton. There is a festival hosted by the artisan guild in Valerton which Lydia and her family are going to. There is a big dance at which Lydia dances with a young artist named Alderson Hale. She falls in love. When Lydia goes home, she thinks her country life is boring.
Lydia's father works for the guild by preparing the Jeefwoods for the harvest. In Valerton, the regent, Victor Brimm, is planning on destroying the Jeefwood Forest because he does not like the people who carve them and wants to be mean. Lydia is concerned. Her father is taken to jail with some other men, for no good reason, because he is trying to prevent the Jeefwood forests from being destroyed, and Victor Brimm wants him out of the way. Lydia prays everything will be alright and an angel, named Ebol, comes to help. Together they go see the leader of Korasan, and he makes everything alright.
I would recommend this book to a friend because it is suspenseful and moves quickly; as soon as Lydia prays, you meet Ebol up in heaven, and she falls in love quickly. I liked this because it did not take too long to read the book, but a lot happened.
My favorite character was Ebol because he was so sleepy but he always got things finished. I also liked Ebol because he never gave up.

Written by 10 year old Sara Heron.
I think you should read this book because it is impossible to put down. It's exciting the way Sid Hite creates his story. Also the word-choice is beautiful.

Jenson's Review of Cecil in Space
Cecil In Space is the average story about a 17 years old named Cecil discovering himself. He lives in the small town of Bricksburg, Virginia, and we get a good understanding of his life. This book is pretty typical a mediocre story.
At times I felt Hite was trying just to hard to appeal to a young audience. The results are boring scripture and over the top narrative that seems to turn off many young women. The only thing I liked about this story was Cecil's Aunt June. She's a very lively character who lives in a mental institution.
Overall, this book is just...ok. It feels rushed and incomplete. I don't recommend this book for anyone, but people desperate for a quick book report might want to check this out. They should probably be mature young readers ages 12-15 due to mild language and sexual inuendo.

You Won't forget it
I read this book about a year ago and I still remember many details about it. Cecil is a nice guy that's shy around girls. The small town setting is great. Read it and you won't regret it.

I loved this hysterical adventure of teenage romance
A fun book by a great author! I had the opportunity to hear Sid Hite speak a year ago and I was absolutely enthralled by his humble attitude and obvious love for the English language. His vocabulary is precise and educational in and of itself. I used this novel as a read aloud with 9th graders and the feelings were mixed, but I think they all would have enjoyed the book if they had read it silently and finished in larger chunks than my method allowed.

High adventure and edge of your seat suspense...
I find that Mr. Stevenson is a very talented writer because his story was described excellently and the suspense seemed very real.

Kidnapped is the story of a young man's adventures. This particular young man was named David Balfour. After his parents passed away David set off in search of his rich uncle, to find himself a new home. Little did he know that on his arrival that his uncle would try to chase him away with a gun, and would be the most miserly person David had ever met. For fear of having to feed David, the uncle had him kidnapped aboard a ship that would take him to America to work on the plantations. Due to an unexpected change in the weather, however, the ship was wrecked on the coast of Scotland, and there the adventure began.

On the back of the novel it says that this book has been enjoyed by generations and shall be enjoyed for generations to come. When I chose to read this novel I wasn't sure if that statement would be true. I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed the story, I found it to be well written and exciting. I looked forward to the end because I was curious to see what would happen.

I'd say any book that is good enough to be deemed a classic has an importance all it's own. I have not read many classics but I find this book important because it holds a lot of information pertaining to the history and culture of Scotland and it's people.

In other words, this is a great story, read it!

A Thrilling Read!
Robert Louis Stevenson was without a doubt one of the greatest historical/adventure novelists that ever lived, and Kidnapped is unquestionably one of his best works. My only regret is that I waited so long to finally read it. It was a new and exciting change from Treasure Island, a book which I love, but have read approximately once every year since the second grade. Finally, longing for a little swashbuckle, and wishing for a way out of my Jim Hawkins rut, I picked up Kidnapped, and was immediately swept off on a thrilling, suspenseful and exhilarating adventure through the Scottish highlands. For days I sat rigid on the edge of my seat, eagerly following the young David Balfour as he was cheated of his inheritance by his wily uncle, kidnapped by pirates, and befriended by a cocky Jacobite outlaw. Breathlessly, I followed him and his companion as they were falsely accused of murder and forced to flee from British troops. Finally, I heaved a sigh of contented disappointment as the story ended, glad at the way things had ended, yet upset that it all had to end and that I would at last have to part from the two heroes of whom I had grown so fond. This is without a doubt a book that I will reread as many times as I have Treasure Island, and I envy the lucky reader who is picking it up for the first time. It is thrilling, exciting, suspenseful, unpredictable, and thoroughly intoxicating. After reading it, my thirst for such dashing adventure was so terrible that I immediately had to run to the library and lay my hands on every adventure novel I could find. I would highly reccommend it to every lover of adventure stories, particularly those with a historical base. I would suggest though that first time readers take a minute to read just a very little bit about the Jacobite rebellions, particularly the one of 1745. It will help greatly to clarify the story, and make it that much more enjoyable. (If indeed, it could get any better than it already is!)

An awesome book for both young and old!
Let me tell you now that 'Kidnapped' is my personal favourite, and I've already read it four times! You'll never get a moment to pause to take a yawn. R.L. Stevenson with his superb writing capabilities writes of a young man named David Balfour. When his father dies, he is told to go to his uncle's house. After several failed attempts to kill David the wicked uncle sells him off to a skipper of a ship. In the course of his stay on the ship David meets the Jacobite, Alan. I can't describe the novel in words you gotta read it to know what you are really in for! This is the greatest adventure novel I've ever read. If you have read Stevenson's 'Treasure Island' then you won't be disappionted with this one.
